  • Building upon the last video ( • Making a Sampler in Ma... ), we’ll add a polybuffer~ to the patch to allow us to swap the sample that the sampler is using. There’s lots of “classic” Max patching in this one, involving Max messages, the trigger object, and the route object. Great for beginners!
(Sorry for the little bit of cut-off patching at 16:00 and 17:00)
    Here’s the patch:z

    00:00 Introduction
01:10 Quick recap of last time
    02:47 Replacing buffer~ contents
    03:30 Using a separate buffer with wave~
    04:30 Connecting to info~ and waveform~
    10:40 polybuffer~
13:40 polybuffer~, buffer names, and umenu

Phenomenal series - thank you so much!

How can we make this polyphonic?

This is something I'm trying to work on. I'm starting with mc.wave~, polybuffer~, and mc.ramp. But I'm struggling to get it to work. Not sure yet how to get mc.wave~ to dynamically switch from buffer to buffer in sync with ramps...

sorry for the delay getting back to you. polyphony is one area where the signal-based method can be trickier. i woudl say it depends a bit on how you're using polyphony. if you have multiple "tracks" that are all playing different patterns, then you can use MC as Jake describes below. (I'll try to find some time to make a video about this). If you're looking to actually play the sampler with a keyboard, then using MIDI with poly~ is probably be the best way to go

Heya. Is sample buffer slicing by transient a total pita to setup? Id love to make something in rnbo mimicing the slice sensitivity of Simpler from Live

never tried it! i’ll read up on it. in the meantime a non-rnbo compatible solution that works great though is fluid.onsetslice in the FluCoMa / Fluid Corpus Manipulation package.

also ben (@ersatz_ben) made a great video covering these concepts recently: ruclips.net/video/bX42g_E88Ak/видео.htmlsi=2bpargXSjQtoQE1D
this envelope follower approach should work great for a relatively simple case of drums against a quiet background. for more complex material you’d need to get into techniques like breaking the signal into frequency bands, then analyze each and separately

Can you/will you do a series on how to use MPE controllers in Max? Or do you know of any resources that explains this? I ask this in conjunction with this new sampler series. I like controlling sample parameters (loop start, loop length, pitch) with MPE.

That does sound fun! I don't own an MPE controller but would love to make this video at some point. I will add it to the list: )

@@p__meyerThank you! You own Ableton Live, right? You can use it to send MPE data to Max for testing. And I can definitely help with testing patches. I have two different MPE playing surfaces.

@@KorhanErel Oh cool! Got an example als you could share?

@@p__meyer sorry, with surface I meant actual MPE controllers. I don't have any MPE Max patches as can't wrap my head around managing MPE inside Max. I use hardware synths or Ableton at the moment. Ableton's MPE implementation in its sample players is very rudimentary, unfortunately.
