    This is all about the Kawasaki M8, the replacement to the Budd m2 as well as the m4 and m6. I think that the m8 is a fitting replacement to the budd m2, and it is just as revolutionary as the m2 was back then. It is comfortable, safe, reliable and good looking. Maybe not that last one but I do truly believe that the M8 is perfect for metro north and con dot. It should also operate on shoreline east, as a replacement for their p40's and other equipment. That was the coaches and locomotives could be used for CT rail. Special thanks to

    Will the M8 make it to being a bi -level coach, perhaps a M8b coach....

    • @nyrailfan202
      @nyrailfan202  2 года назад

      If metro north was to ever purchase bilevel equipment they would purchase locomotive hauled coaches first. Then the new haven line fleet would probably be next if it was practical. However modifying the M8’s design to be bilevel would be so much work that it would be a whole new thing. Also bombardier is building bilevel emu’s for NJT now metro north probably wouldn’t buy from them after what happened with the m7’s but you never know. Even if they don’t buy them they will definitely look at how they operate on NJT. It would be possible to build a bilevel with m8 electrical equipment but it would for sure require a whole new car design so it probably would be called the m10 or something though that name doesn’t seam right.

    The M-8 can't run into Penn until the PRR third rail is extended as their transformers can't handle the 25hz power. The M-8 is a nice car but I wish MN had kept the older cars in better shape and spread out the transition over a much longer period of time. They basically trashed the M-2s so we had to rush to buy all new M-8s as opposed to supplementing the existing fleet and retiring the oldest or worst condition cars slowly. Lastly, the M-8 is good at what it does, but it is a very bespoke solution to the New Haven Line but MN and CDOT seem hell bent on jamming a square peg into a round hole and running them to Old Saybrook and Penn as opposed to getting the appropriate equipment capable of low level platforms for SLE and 25hz power for Penn and eventually through running with NJT.
