Thank you great video, I’ve learnt throughout the years being here it’s best to keep a low profile and not be to open about your personal life to everybody ,, but that goes I guess being in any country.i think it’s great too see young poeple coming here and making a living. 30 years ago I felt like I was the only foreign person here in Cali, everybody used to look at me on the bus as if I came from a different planet ..I kind of enjoyed the attention, now they don’t even look at me lol how things changed.
I really enjoy your RUclips channel. I was in Medellin A couple years ago.when I was there I was 66 years old.my shock was how friendly the people were.i I wish I was younger I would definitely relocate there.keep up the great job you guys are doing such a special country Thank you peace out
Excellent informational video as always. Once the international flights open up (I pray in September), I plan to come to Medellin again. I hope that we can meet. Continue to Stay Safe and Thank you!!!!
There is a huge problem with Gringo pricing. Don't kid yourself especially in the streets. Also I got Gringo'd in paying for motorcycle repairs. Everything needed to be done twice and it cost double.
Great topic and information as usual. As an Asian who has decided to move permanently to Colombia, I have been researching much as possible for the past 3 years. I have visited Barranquilla, Bogota, and Medellin so I have some personal experience what to expect and outweigh all the Pros and Cons. And being Asian it will be harder to blend in with the locals :)
Thanks for your comment. You're right it will be harder to blend in but on the other hand it can be an advantage. There aren't too many Asian tourists in Colombia yet. Most people will be curious about and may come up to you and start a conversation.
I have to laugh about safety. I was visiting Quipdo. Quipdo seems really dangerous, like something out of a spy movie in the middle of the jungle. However, I noticed the person I was with carried his wallet in his back pocket -- something you never do in Bogota or Medellin -- even in good areas. I asked him and he just laughed: "There are no pickpockets here and the crime is very low, don't worry". So much for appearances.
My wife and I speak Spanish...to us it sounds like the biggest challenge is renting a good apartment without a fiador. We live cool weather but don’t want to live in a huge city like Bogota, so we think we might like Rio Negro or Manizales. Thx !
I went to a travel agency today. At the moment there's nothing available due to Covid-19. The travel agent does not recommend i go solo. She suggested it's better in a group, (although Colombia is beautiful) it can be rough.
Depends where you are, if the travel agency would set up something in NYC then they can send you to Colombia as well. I feel safer in Colombia then in NYC. 😉
We are looking at Columbia to expat and for sure will contact you. My fear is a stable government and stable currency. I saw a video about their peso pegged to the oil price and wondering about stability also how friendly is the government/police are with expats that want to obey the law of course, in their country. If there was another crisis would we not get the health care we needed. Thanks
The police are fine. I have noticed a little corruption, but nothing like Mexico. I would keep most of your money in US or European banks and only pull out what you need. In this day it is easy to transfer funds. The government is very bureaucratic but that is true everywhere in the World. The health care is better than in the US according to the WHO, but maybe that is not saying much. Health care is pretty poor in the USA.
I have made several trips to Colombia. After things normalize, if they do. I am looking at Santa Marta y Cartagena to live. I prefer Santa Marta but have read the medical is not very good.
@@ExpatAuthor Retired cop 63 I've been fortunate to find and happily using two health care services, EMI, and Sanitas both give excellent customer service for about $50.00 USD
Thanks for giving your opinion, to clarify: I understand where your comment is coming from. First of all those are two humans and those were the only ones I could find from my huge selection of videos that looked angry at me when filming. Unfortunately the Colombians are very happy people and the only time somebody looked mad at my direction was this time and they coincidentally had darker skin. Nothing more nothing less. Keep in mind we are from Europe, Switzerland where racism is a whole other thing (I don't say it doesn't exist it's just a whole other thing) then what it's in the US. When we put the two guys on the thumbnail we just saw... two guys. Not two "black-guys." Anyway because of the current situation we changed the thumbnail. Wish you the best. Sam
In my opinion, Colombia is not bad at all, my only fear is "taxes". In a year or so, I will be retiring with a yearly income of 120k, I am afraid that they will tax the the bejesus of my money. I rather use the money on sugar babes.
Is kidnapping an issue in Columbia at all? I live 6 months in Canada where it is not of course but also 6 months in Puerto Vallarta where there is a very slim chance I believe, but it has happened
I looked at all of your thumbnails and noticed that most of them have either you and/or your wife or the person you are interviewing on the thumbnail. This video has two random black men with the caption 5 things expats should fear in Colombia. What were you trying to illustrate by putting two black men on the thumbnail?

How To Expat - Thank you very much for the explanation. I didn’t think of any Ill will on your part. With what’s going on here in the US, it just seems so out of character for your channel, that’s why I asked for some insights. Please continue to provide great context. As one of your earlier supporter, I will keep watching. 😀
Awwwwww sadly I'm not rich enough to be a sugar daddy to anyone but with my dogs! HAHAHAH! I did have an american tourist off of a cruise ship in Cartagena yell at me for "speaking Spanish" Since my local tour guide spoke no english (and was therefor much much cheaper) we kept just moving on with our tour! Americans tend to think everyone speaks english everywhere and it's simply not the case.
I was told by my Colombian accountant that women here are looking for a man who will give them a good life. They don't want to work "crummy jobs.'" I loved my first wife very much but when the money was thin the loyalty disappeared and the bad names started. Also, I see men in their 70's married to women in their 30's. It doesn't work. Don't do it.
Hello, I love your videos and the information they provide. But why is it that on this video (expat fears) and your how safe is Colombia vid from 2 months ago you choose to use black men as your thumbnail? It seems very stereotypical and disrespectful and doesn't even follow the theme of your channel. It seems like a bit of subconscious bias. Having a black partner or friends doesn't change that. With all that is going on in the world especially in your target market, you should show a bit more consideration.

@Maciej Jesiołowski It's not a racist comment. I really appreciate all the videos that they make. They actually helped me a lot when I was in rhe planning stages to come here. However, I do think it is an unfortunate choice of. a thumbnail, and hopefully it won't bring too much controversy. But I admit I was sad when I saw it.
How To Expat maybe it wasn’t your intention but It was a poor choice and it didn’t look good. It speaks to biases that some people hold when they see dark skin people, mean face and the title 5 things expats fear most. I’m not American btw. I’m of African decent and by the way you look you have some African blood too so I would assume you would be a little sensitive to such matters. Anyhow, all the best. Have a wonderful day!

Question about safety: is it safe to walk around with a nice Rolex and jewelry? I heard if you wear a gold necklace you stand out.
Good choice for a thumbnail and the association you are implying.

They don't speak Engish in Mexico, they speak Spanglish :)
I is worse. They throw in a lot of Indian words so even if you know Spanish, you can't understand them.

Too bad sugar babies are not tax deductible
Hey so what exactly is your business about?
Could you please spell out the cities where you won’t find ex-pats for miles and miles?
haha there are Gringos everywhere, but here are some: Monteria, Sogamoso.
👌
Can’t speak Spanish, but want to come for a vacation. Could I survive just for a vacation ?
Yes, of course, it is just easier if you speak Spanish especially if you want to live here.
LOL survive
Is kidnapping an issue in Columbia at all? I live 6 months in Canada where it is not of course but also 6 months in Puerto Vallarta where there is a very slim chance I believe, but it has happened
That was different back in the days but is not an issue anymore as far as we know.
You might get kidnapped if you spell Colombia with a "u" and not an "o". heh heh!
Another great lesson!
