After living in Colombia for over 2 years we got pretty much used to the Colombian culture and their costumes. But for those who haven't been living here, some things may be perceived as weird.
In this video I want to talk about the things that are weird to me as a Swiss person.
Please be aware, that "weird" to me means something being different, uncommon also funny. It is in no means meant to be disrespectful to the Colombian culture. Those are just things I have never seen before or things that are managed differently here.
In this video I'll talk about:
    Men Manicure
    Age Gaps
    People Culture
    And More!
    Thanks for watching!

I’m a gringo married to a Nica and we live in the south eastern US. Here in the south, like in many hispanic cultures, we tend to chit chat and ask about family, etc before asking direct questions. I was raised this way and I can see why some people would find getting into direct questions immediately to be rude.

I think you and Sam should seek some information on the gangs there in medellin. they are becoming an increasing problem there, especially north of medellin. I'm personally aware of things going on in bello and copacabana now. Maybe you can get someone from the army to speak on your channel to advise of the area's where travelers are most at risk? thank you for your content! i love you guys!!

Well that's not true at all, the age gap is something maybe an specific feature of Medellin culture. I'm live in Bucaramanga, Santander, and I must say you won't expect to find a boyfriend to help all family. That's ridiculous. I think it works the same in Bogota where I was born.
These days in a relationship, both has to work.
Colombia has different customs in every city or region of the country.
In Santander we say things straightforward, and we are perceived as ride by the rest of the country. Maybe because there were german immigration here?

Great information! Especially for people who do not travel out of their countries, many only know their own culture and ways, while others who travel the world may give/get false impressions and judgments based on visiting only for short-stays (eg 3-7 days). It's accurate when the message comes from someone like you and Sam who actually have stayed there for a long period; authentic and better representation of true life and values. Cheers :)

#HowToExpat : Sorry you are wrong, the reason people don't smell is because in Latin America it is normal to take several showers during the course of a day. A rinse before working out, A complete shower after working out, Another after coming from work/school, and lastly one before going to sleep. Water is very cheap, and it is a culture thing.

I know that "when in Rome do as the Romans" but what I personally had to get used to and accept (not 100 % yet) is not being on time or ever in a hurry. Also you can be texting or talking with someone and they say wait, I'll be back in a minute and that minute will most likely be an hour or more. No sense of time... but it is an awesome place or I wouldn't keep visiting and you two wouldn't be living there.

That is BS: Not bad luck, it is just hygene (you surely don't want to ruin your bag by puting it on the dirty floor). Also offering someone to take their bag is a way to show that you care about others. The age gap is somewhat complicated, I have an aunt who is 9 years older than her husband and my father's girlfriend is 7 years younger than him, people here dont worry much about that when there is an age difference in adults. But the typical thing is to see young couples with very little difference in age or the same age.

Same thing with the older Financially successful women having younger men as well. Same as any place else if you have money people will flock to you. This rule applies anywhere Far East, Northern Africa , almost all spanish speaking countries. Just don’t get married so you get stuck with divorce settlement payouts 😂

See I was raised by my grandparents. My grandfathers were both WWII veterans. One of them was from Italy. I spent a lot of time with both so I really am old fashioned and believe in these same values even though I am a third generation American. When I met my Colombian Fiance it was like striking gold tbh. I can't really be happy with the women in my own country because they are too liberalized and modern. For me it makes me feel sick and unnatural and I am never happy with such women. I like a traditional woman. And I guess it's a double bonus that God made me attracted to latinas over other women. I admit I go coo coo for coco puffs for them. I love brown eyes and black hair so much.

I have been 15 years in Europe and still discovering many things, like age gaps is very common here too. In fact, I think is more common than in Colombia. Very Conservative religious cultures and a lot unimpressed things and behaviours. I felt the way you described things about Colombia is very disappointing and sometimes insulting, would like about your country. By the way, people hold your bags in the buses because they want to be nice. One more thing, try to learn more Spanish to understand things better and stop to be too judgemental.

    1 - Bus/bag : politeness and hygiene
2 - age gaps: divorce rate in Switzerland is huge. There is no wright or wrong as long as it Works.
There is a natural age gap since women get older MUCH faster than men.
    10 years ???, like 35 and 25, 55 and 45, 85 and 75 😅 is nothing! Imagine going home everyday and facing the devil ! 👹
3 - "latin countries" : this shows a lack of knowledge about the continent.
Ex: Brazil: 8th economy on the Planet. We speak portuguese. The country is larger than Europe.
Argentina and Venezuela: 🤐. Comparing Chile or Uruguai to Bolívia??? 🤷🏻‍♂️
4 - business or not : a lot of europeans are RUDE.
Maybe it is the crisis that began more than 2 thousands years ago. 😅
So not making business when you feel uncomfortable is st outcomers should learn just because peace and happiness are priceless.
Maybe that's why suicide is not like a flu in South America.
5 - eating : THERE IS NO FOOD IN EUROPE, GOD!
I Love the winter in Europe. I go to Switzerland every winter.
At some point I start to dream about food. Fishes, stakes, FRESH FRUITS and so on ...
6 - True: they don't wash that much, but a have very nice swiss, german and austrian friends.
7 - law flexibiliylty or social flexibility: try to build a house in Switzerland or open a business in Germany that u will face a enormous burocracy and discover why so many people leave and NEVER come back. There is no perfect place.
Ps: I've Just made my point as a South American. Most of your informations are essentials but you have to take into account that You moved to Colômbia. You're not colombians. I mean you have a very good Idea about Medellín, but never like paisas. The same happen to me : spendind months in Europe every year doesnt make me an european. ( st I wouldn't like to be... Our 1st date, she took my hand, looked at my finger nails and dropped my hand with a look of disgust. Women in Colombia expect men to have perfect nails and no pubic hair! It's absolutely not true that we don't eat much for dinner! We traditionally eat warm also for dinner. We common ppl cook for lunch and dinner and we eat more or less the same portion at night. Of course, sometimes there is not much left, so we have something like arepa and chocolate or scrambled eggs. But we usually eat at night. Most ppl. do. Might be that ppl this lady know don't eat much bc they are young workers, but she cannot generalize based on few observations. That is spreading false stereotypes. As a Colombian I advice you to take her point of views with a grain of salt.

@@Anonymus-z3z Also, don't confuse having voluptuous figure with being overweight. OK, .... with respect to how people smell in the "most innovative city in the World Medellin", your assessment is totally incorrect. The mean temperature in the City of Medellin is spring like temperature it is not hot and it is not cold, typically the temperature during the day 75 degrees and during the evening 68 degrees. Thus the name eternal spring city of Medellin.
The result is that the temperature is perfect, therefore the people in Medellin 99% shower 2 times per day, ... the citizens of Medellin shower in the morning every day prior to going to work and after they return from work at the end of the day they also shower as daily routine.
This is a contrast by comparison to all countries in the European Union, which at best 99% of the population only showers once per every 7 days. many Europeans shower once every 2 weeks. I know this for a fact since I traveled through out Europe including Italy, Spain, France, Switzerland, England, The Netherlands and many others. In fact the french normally use lots of perfume to complement the odors from the body for only showering once per week.
The citizens of the Most Innovative city of the world Medellin, are extremely clean in terms of showering 2 times daily. The Girls in Medellin above showering daily, also love to look their best and many wear perfume to smell even better.
I am in the USA today and by most part 80% of the population do shower once per day... specifically those of us who leave in the sun belt of USA, such as Florida which is extremely hot.
