- Video of the Kinkaid Lake Spillway near Murphysboro Illinois. When I was filming, it was pretty calm in the area, but if you search the internet, you can find some pictures of this place roaring with water!! Interview with my sister Anna ( SIU Carbondale Student) at the end of the video at the top of the Spillway. Filmed in September 2011.
I frequently swam in this lake in the 1970s and 80s when I attended school at SIU. There was a great rope swing on a hill just a short swim from the spillway. I taught a good friend to swim here over the course of one summer. I don't recall the large concrete "dam" - perhaps that is new? I'm surprised not to see other people in your video - this was once a very popular swimming spot. Did they close it off (like they did the Crab Orchard Spillway?) Anyway, thanks for the video and the memories!
i love swimming there
My uncle and aunt lives here. The spillway is awesome for fishing.
Best to go in Spring to early summer when all lake is at its highest from the winter melt-off & Spring rains....large waterfalls & all this open area is more filled with water...later in Summer & Fall, it is more dried up & mossy from the inactive waters...just an FYI for those itnerested
@southrootbeer It is to the west of Murphysboro IL, on Route 149. The turnoff is kind of near the Route 3, Route 149 junction. It is located on Spillway Road, but the street sign was either knocked down or stolen the last time I was there. For some reason, there are no goverment signs on Route 149 indicating the spillway. Look it up on Google maps.
It's lovely!
That sucks seems like all the info i get from anywhere on things i an curious so i know is usually negative, maybe see it if lucky i guess if easy to spot to turn. Even maps and direction ones never mention signs to know if your close, so i never know if no sign in directions. But thanks just i love waterfalls if lucky i hope to see ift if that road is noticeable. but thanks
I live in Carbondale, If I went straight on Highway 13 through murphysburo will it take me to the turn off you are talking about?
