i live close to where sherri was “found.” it’s heartbreaking because there was another missing woman who disappeared at around the same time, and she didn’t receive nearly as much attention. she is still missing to this day if i’m not mistaken. edit:: her name is stacey smart. she disappeared the same day as sherri.
Yep. She went missing the same day Sherri faked her kidnapping and thanks to her the police were more focused on her fake story than the real victim. She is also still missing as of now.
Oh that's so sad! I have seen this story covered many times but no one mentioned there was a real disappearance that wasn't solved at the same time. :(
I remember living in Northern California when this happened and the local news Facebook comments were wildddd. An old classmate said “uhmm are you sure? Because she is the biggest liar I’ve ever met” and dropped her racist blogs lmao
i think a lot of people had that thought, even if didn't admit it... her disappearance and, ESPECIALLY later descriptions of her captors: a very stereotypical description, almost resonating to what a racist would say. My only big doubt was her injuries. I never thought she could do that to herself... what a psycho.
@@adalon378It can be funny when you have the inside track on someone's bullshit _after_ the disaster happens but _before_ the public makes up their mind.
As a Latina, mental illness or not, she lost my sympathy when she chose to blame fictional members of the Hispanic community, and insult Mexican music while she described her 'ordeal'.
Redding is my hometown and also where i currently live. I need yall to know that shari was not a "well liked" member of the community. She was a nobody like the rest of us. As soon as she was found... people started questioning her story immediately. She now lives in shingletown ca (30 miles east of redding) with a man whose wife mysteriously died at the beginning of the pandemic. All that being said, Nikki Cheng Saelee-McCain is currently missing. Her case has gotten minimal coverage in the press, not surprising as she is not a pretty white blonde woman. She is beautiful, but just not the right kind of beautiful for the press. Her case is disturbing. Please look up Nikki. Her family deserves to have her home. Edit: RIP Tara. I was very young when this happened. And let me tell you, Tara's parents have never stopped fighting to make sure their daughter is never forgotten. They are truly inspiring people.
Oh gosh, seeing that she was in the middle of a DV case against her husband....when DV victims start to fight back it's often such a dangerous time for them
i live round an hour away from redding in arcata… ive always been afraid as a hispanic trans guy that stuff like this is going to happen to me… thank you for making this comment
Sherri Papini should face a harsher punishment than what she was given. When i was 8, my mother was abducted at knife point out of her bed, as I lay next to her! My mother survived the hands of a murderer and rapist. She was able to get away from the MONSTER that raped her and almost killed her and he was caught. I remember the affect that it had on me as a child and the affect that it still has on me today, and most of all, what it did to my mother. Shes never been the same 35 years later. Im disgusted by what this woman did and by what she did to her family and children. All for a lick at fame. Well, she got her fame all right. God bless and prayers to anyone who has had to go through actual abuse/crime/trauma, etc... Thanks SWOOP!!!
Your mother is such a strong person I hope she gets nothing but peace and happiness for her life. Your a brave daughter for going through that. That should happen to no one, it is truly. horrific. I hope the both of you are very happy and continue to hold each other up.
@@Zenphiaaa123 thank you so much! That's so amazingly sweet of you to say. You are very kind and yes, no one should ever have to face something like that. People in this world commit the most insane acts of violence. It's so tragic that these things happen. I thank God everyday my mother survived. There was another family that was not so lucky. I still pray for that family to this day. May God bless you 🙏 ❤️
What I absolutely loathe about people like Sherri Pappini is that they want to be the victim SO bad, but when you think of people like your mother, who actually went through horrific stuff and ARE victims, I just can't help but think (towards people like Sherri) "Oh, you wanna be the victim? I'm sure people like @kristenpierce7810's mother would absolutely love to be rid of the weight being an actual victim has put on their shoulders. You want the trauma, the nightmares, the flashbacks, the triggers, the feelings of being fragile/broken? Here, take it if you want it so badly!". Disgusting. All angry feelings aside, wishing both you and your mother nothing but peace and healing. I'm so sorry you both went through that.
@khaleesireyna731 PREACH!!! Thank you for your kind words. Sherri is a victim now, but a victim of her own Hell, which she should rightly serve, but her children did not deserve this, her family didn't deserve this, the time and resources she wasted that could have been put towards actual crimes. I wish bad for no one but her punishment was not satisfactory in my opinion. She obviously needs help.
@kristenpierce7810 I agree! While I definitely think Sherri should've faced harsher punishment than she has, I will give some credit to the fact that the court/judge gave her nearly double the sentence the prosecution asked for. That's definitely something. But I think 18 months plus all the condemnation of her entire community (and let's be honest, the world) is plenty hell/punishment enough. Eminem has made a rap lyric about her. She'll never escape what she created and that is entirely what she deserves, even if she's only able to pay back a fraction of the money she took from all of this. I always feel so horrible for her kids in particular. My mother ran away when I was 10 yrs old (very long story that one. In her case it was very much due to severe *diagnosed* mental illness). Her sudden disappearance and everything that followed it were definitely a major influence on me in my formative years (to put it mildly). The thing is, as I got older I came to better understand what happened with my mother and was able to see it for what it was, both the things that were on her and the things that weren't (therapy helped a lot). But I can never forget the indescribly deep fear that I felt as a child when that all happened. I can only imagine what those kids felt then and what they'll have to unpack as the years go on when they realize the whole truth behind that time their mother just disappeared for awhile. Thankfully, it sounds like they have a good support system and their dad is absolutely *there* for them, so I think they'll be able to work through it, given time (won't be easy, but I think they can be ok in the end). Still, that's a kind of fear and vulnerability I'd never wish on any child. I'm always happy to show kindness and support for anyone who's gone through rough/traumatic stuff. Even if words are the only thing I can give, I'm glad to give them. Please let your mother know that this internet stranger is rooting for her and she is one brave, strong and badass woman (and never forget that those words apply to you as well)! 😊
Based on information from the small town that she is now living in that my in laws are from. Her boys resent her and now live mostly with their father. And she’s now dating a guy who the town people suspects killed his wife 2-3 days after she asked for a divorce.
I'm still watching, so I don't know if Swoop shows this, but there's a video of Sherry "trying" food/hot sauce and coughing as part of her fake trauma, and one of her children bursts into tears and says they're scared. It's heartbreaking.
I love how Swoop is all “Who do you think is sus? What could possibly be going on here?” And the title of the video is literally “she faked her own kidnapping!” Lol
I know, you can’t report SA with evidence without them thinking it’s your fault, why so many are avid to speak up. So sad there are real victims that have to deal with this and than this woman gets all this coverage and a narcissist liar.
I mean yes but also she has bills to pay just like everyone else. No videos means no money. She probably can’t afford to take breaks in this economy. She does live in California and it’s super expensive.
There’s even more info into the personal lives of those around her on a Hulu doc. It’s so sad. At one point Keith learned Sherri would pretty have the kids inhaling bleach/rubbing alcohol to make them “feel better” when they were sick. The kids would get sicker until they were so visibly ill she could proudly take them to the doctors. That’s not even including how she traumatized those babies with her hoax kidnapping.
Oh lord. I just posted a comment about getting the kids away from her before she decides to branch out to Munchausen's syndrome by proxy, but by the sound of it she already went there
Those poor kids! Smelling rubbing alcohol can help with nausea, but to force them when it isn't helping? And BLEACH??? I already hated Sherri, but this another level of evil.
Sherri couldn’t even be creative enough when it came to describing her “captors.” It’s basically a recreation of the blog post she wrote years ago about being “bullied” by two Hispanic women. She really couldn’t let that go, huh?
We need to talk more about her domestic abuse after the "22 days." She used the lie of being kidnapped to isolate and control her family for 4 years after the incident. They weren't allowed to go anywhere without her say so, do anything without her say so, talk to anyone, without her say so. She would bring up the lie every single day. Her husband and kids were not allowed to go out without her because she said she was too anxious without them. They weren't allowed to meet new people because she said she was too anxious around new people. She had constant, screaming meltdowns and her children and husband had to placate her each time. Any time there was any disagreement she would either have a meltdown and blame the kidnapping or bring up the kidnapping as her reasoning of why she should get her way. We keep talking about the initial lie. But I feel like no one is recognizing the years of complete control, isolation, and psychological torture she inflicted on her family for years until the truth was proven. I think that was a major reason behind her lie in the first place. To use it to conduct psychological warfare on her family. She isn't just a liar. She is a domestic abuser.
Thank you!! The psychological damage she dealt to her children, especially her son, is horrific. Poor Keith is going to be paying for a lot of therapy for those children because their mother is truly unhinged!
Wow! I didn't know this. That's crazy! I'm glad Kieth divorced her, got his kids, and walked away. He's a good looking guy, I hope he finds true love and lives happily ever after w/o Sherry's lies and drama.
She wasnt a victim. Her husband kids family friends and community were victims. I pray they all heal from her actions. She has made people who actually have trauma in their lives feel their situation won't be believed or valid. Sad but true. Bless all of them.
This story has bugged me for SO long and then when I saw the Netflix doc about the lady who actually was kidnapped and not believed, it made me just straight up angry!
I remember 20/20 covered a kidnapping similar to the Netflix one and they called it the Gone Girl disappearance (even though it’s woefully inaccurate). And it took a second similar kidnapping (this time a married couple) a few cities away for her to finally be believed!
As someone with ED, the fact she got down to less than 90 lbs stood out to me the most. Self harm and branding can be endured with an adrenaline rush - like tattooing or BDSM. But anorexia is a different type of self harm that takes discipline to ignore all the signals your body sends you. Once the neuro signals have switched to respond to low levels of serotonin in response to hunger, the feeling of intense hunger becomes very addictive. But to do so with the speed of losing that much weight so quickly with the intention of fabricating abuse has GOT to be a mental health disorder separate from ED.
I have some chronic neurological issues which really messed with my ability to feel physically hungry. Then I developed anorexia. So personally it's not really a feeling of intense hunger that I find addictive. I guess it's just the old-fashioned high of controlling the way that my body looks. But I have struggled with self-harm, and I can see how there's a self-harm aspect to it, even if it isn't causing me physical discomfort most of the time.
With cases like this, I always find myself thinking about potential mental health issues... but with cases like this, I've also kinda just come to the conclusion that it really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things. Sherri most likely had these issues for years, yet probably saw no issue with any of it and would've fought tooth and nail to even see a professional for any of it. To bring up her mental health after she's done all of this harm to her family and the community at large just feels like an excuse (I say this as someone who also struggles with mental health, just to be clear). Like, you don't get to ignore your mental health until it suddenly becomes a convenient excuse for bad behavior. That's just not it. I hope Sherri got the help she needed, but at this point, any conversation about her possible mental issues just feels disrespectful to the people who struggle with those things and AREN'T lying to police for attention.
Yes it's def something besides (or in addition to) an ED. Most people with EDs (in my experience) engage in those behaviors bc in a twisted way it makes them feel healthier/safer/more in control/more attractive. And while some ppl engage in behaviors as a cry for help or as a form of self punishment/harm, seeking extreme physical pain/injury with the intent of convincing ppl you've been victimized is a whole other kind of mental illness.
😭your comment reminds me suddenly of legion from “who the fuck did i marry” being skinny at the post office when they signed the divorce papers after milking the hell out of his “leg injury” lol
As a Mexican woman myself, you have no idea how pissed I am about this. Every time a hispanic does a crime, the constant comments of people saying…”this is why these people need to be deported” and “this is why we need control on our borders”. Not once was there an apology in those commenters that said that after this came out. Honestly, when a white person does a crime it’s always downplayed or minimize but anybody in the minority it’s ALWAYS about race. But we mention this and people will always say, “stop putting race into this, this has nothing to do with race”. There is no f-ing win with us. Smh
I'm so sorry that you went through this pain. It's not fair at all and very idiotic of Papini to do. I am glad that they got the DNA and proved that it wasn't two Mexican women. I'm not Mexican, nor can I relate to the pain, but I sure as hell am pissed (as a white person) that someone who looks like me is this much of a moron. You deserve to be treated with respect and dignity, along with other Mexican people affected by this idiot woman.
Humans can really suck. I'm so sorry you experience ANY kind of discrimination. As a species we need to do better, especially the American variants of the species.
As a white woman myself, I see it a lot and it pisses me off, too. And what's worse is even if you're white and point that double standard out, people still accuse you of "making it about race". Imo, the white people who commit some truly heinous acts get away with it/allow for more heinous acts BECAUSE the perpetrators race is downplayed and minimized. When a white person commits a terrible crime, the other white people in the community don't have to worry about a massive manhunt that could implicate them as innocent bystanders, but when a black or Hispanic person is even alleged to have committed a horrible crime, a lot of other people of the same race have to be worried about getting dragged into it when they were completely uninvolved. It really is f*cked up.
True. Her case reminded me of the Susan Smith case, this woman stated her car was stolen with her kids still in it by a black man. It caused so much racist vitriol to be spewed at any black man that resembled the sketch..but the AA community maintained that her story didn’t make sense… Fast forward it was found that she murdered her children…sadly she is up for parole November this year.
@@TheKhaliente yep it happens way too many times. The worst part is…she got 18 months, which is 9 months with good behavior. Thousands of dollars from tax payers for no reason and she got a slap in the hand. But it’s ok because she’s white, any other race and she would’ve gotten years. Smh it’s a damn shame
Keith got a LOT of crap for being sus (he was too emotional on TV, pleading and crying for his wife's safe return). He was called a creep and a weirdo by his neighbors and his lie detector test (one of the most inaccurate "tests" one can take) was inconclusive. Yet, he was completely innocent, 100% not involved, and devastated when everything finally came out. He did everything a good husband should do.
I hope I never get arrested, because I think I'd look suspicious as heck. I had a narcissistic mother who blamed me for everything, so I have two possible reactions---to either be super agitated and defensive, or to smile and laugh and try to make nice. There is no middle ground, and whichever way I go I'd look bad.
@heatheruhrich6136 Facts. I believe my mother had BPD and was highly abusive. My grandmother had often seen me as being "suspicious," as a child. So often, when I get in trouble, I get highly emotional. I'm joking about, smiling and sarcastic, even mean. Worse case, I'm just angry, aggressive, and highly defensive no matter. So if I got arrested for anything, I'm probably seen as suspicious.
You gotta love when a malignant narcissist is exposed for who and what they are. May she never be able to manipulate or hurt any ever again now that everyone knows about her.
I don't think she's malignant, I'd say vulnerable. My dad's side of the family are varying degrees of narc, my dad being malignant and Sherri comes across more like my aunt, a vulnerable narcissist.
@@folkloreofbeing I agree because I'm listening to a podcast right now (ex-wives undercover) where the ex-husband is a vulnerable narcissist. Constant complex gaslighting and ugly lies that escalate into criminal acts like harassment, embezzlement, and forging all kinds of legal documents. And if a partner tried to call him out with enough evidence he'd threaten self-harm. Feels very parallel.
Sherri has a following, and groupies hang on to her every word and proclaim her innocence. Her current psychologist thinks she is fantastic! He is begging to be included in the documentary she is working on.
I’m so glad Swoop talked about the fact that not everyone acts the same in stressful or tragic situations. Lack of emotion or other behavior that might look “wrong” does not equal guilt.
I never understood why she described the actual place she was hiding out. She would've been smarter if she had created a room that wasn't real. It was awesome when the detectives found her exes house and discovered the exact room.
@wendynerd1199 which is kind of a good thing, in the long run. Can you imagine how much worse things could have been for any number of Hispanic women in the community or even her ex boyfriend if she'd been just a little bit better at lying?!? Thank God, Sherri is a liar AND an idiot because if she'd been better at it, a lot of innocent people could genuinely be facing really harsh criminal penalties.
My guess is it was to help make her lies easier. If she made up a room that's new info to keep track of and maybe she worried about slipping up. By recounting the real room she was in she was being partially truthful making it easier to recount to police. I remember this saying, "When you tell the truth you don't have to remember anything".
What baffles me the most is that she _actually_ carved a hole in the closet wall. Why? If they figured out she was there, it was all over. She _could_ have been trying to set up a "HE must have been secretly behind it!" thing, but she didnt hide herself from people there, theres texts and security footage, she _had_ to know that. It literally makes no sense
Somebody in the comments notes that Keith was NOT paying his mom “$500 per day”, but rather $500/month. REAL huge difference those news agencies really screwed up on.
Ok, I was looking in the comments for this. That was a huge red flag for me, already knowing how the story ended. I had a total rewind moment trying to figure this out, wondering if California was really THAT expensive to live in.
@@araneljones there are parts of California that definitely are that expensive, unfortunately. I’m from the Bay Area, which has one of the highest costs of living on the planet.
30:39 she could've gotten Keith killed by telling her ex she was being abused, and it turned out the ex wanted to 'take care' of Keith in order to protect her instead of coming up with the kidnapping story.
Honestly the ex's whole demeanor and complicity is extremely odd. He honestly sounds a bit unintelligent/I think he played hockey so maybe a bit brain damaged? Regardless, he did not respond in a usual way to anything Sherri did or said
@@helyns1416 I absolutely agree with you, and I guess that is also why Sherri says that he loved her and he wouldn't do that. I think she was so sure about his love and lack of intelligence he has, and used her in her advantage.
Keith Papini’s 911 call is why I no longer pick 911 calls to pieces! And as I type this, Swoop is talking about his body language and verbals…. He “looks/sounds” like the keeper of the Susspool, but he’s her victim.
yeahh, body language analysis is mostly snake oil and their positive reputation is built upon watching and breaking down videos where they already know who's the killer or who's guilty and acting like every tick and movement is a sign.
Its wild how long she kept up the lies, for years. Her poor husband had to hear about it everyday and made to feel guilty. The kids were so scarred. Watching the little boy cry because she was making a fuss about eating hot sauce. The community suffered as well. She has to be psycho to brand herself, break her bones and starve to emaciation. It was also strange how laid back the guy who housed her was.
And now she’s dating a small town used car dealership owner who the town suspects killed his wife a couple days after she asked for a divorce. Was just driving past his dealership last week! Both horrible people that the town does not like
Thoroughly appreciated your encouragement to believe victims while being ok with investigating when something feels off. A friend passed on a quote from his prof: “Generous of spirit; critical of mind.” It captures for me the open-heartedness and patience that everyone deserves with the reminder to allow yourself to think critically, not cynically.
I have this EXACT philosophy!!! Alice Sebold’s case of r*pe is an excellent example of why investigation needs to happen! What I like to say is: believe all victims, but don’t jump to persecute the accused. Investigate. Alice had, indeed, been assaulted, but she unintentionally misidentified her attacker and an innocent man was put in prison, likely facing similar torment as Alice (we all know what happens to people accused of these crimes in prison). DNA evidence decades later cleared him. Unfortunately, I’m not sure if they ever caught the real culprit :/
We had something similar happen in my town I think it was in 2019. A woman claimed she had been kidnapped, driven out of town, & SAed. She was able to describe the van. For about 3 weeks the entire town was keeping an eye out for this van & the two men responsible. Women who resembled her were scared to go out alone, including myself. I even promised my now husband then boyfriend that I wouldn't walk anywhere by myself. It then came out she confessed to the police that she made the entire thing up. I do not think the reason why was made public. The way the town turned on her was insane. I am always believe when people come forward but I genuinely hate when some do this because it makes it so much harder for others.
Please cover the story of Stacy Smart- who went missing the same day from the SAME COUNTY in California as Sherry did. She has received almost no news coverage and has never been found.
Same reason why other people think they can get away with it, they think they’re smarter than anyone else and no one will figure it out. Probably didn’t think about the DNA on her clothes or that the cops would check her clothes. Lies always have a way of coming out, that’s why I usually tell people the truth even if it hurts their feelings. Rather have the brutal truth than have someone lie to my face
The sad thing is that without her story getting so big she might have. The public attention kept the pressure on even years later. The very reasons this story did so much damage was why she was caught.
Absolutely ZERO sympathy for this woman. She completely traumatized her children even after she got back in her attempt to continue the lie. Maybe if she came out and said, “I am so sorry for the trauma I caused to my family and the damage I did. I’m currently seeking treatment for my destructive behavior and will do whatever I can in the future to make amends to them.” But she hasn’t. In my opinion, the only thing Sherri cares about is Sherri.
I'm ashamed to say that I was among those who thought Keith was behind this before it was revealed that she did it to herself. I feel very sorry for Keith and how messed up his whole sense of reality must be now. However, now we have very good documented video examples of someone who is telling the truth and is being 100% honest in a situation like this that isn't really acting how one would "expect" someone to act. Everyone reacts to shock and trauma differently and may not always be the wallowing, sad, teary eyed mess you think they should be.
For the husband It sounds like he still was finding it hard to believe she was telling the truth and he just wanted someone to say that they think she's lying so he didn't think he was crazy for thinking it
I can generally find compassion for most people, but in this case, I'll save my compassion for Sherri's many, *many* victims, but most of all her family.
The fact that Eminem even have a verse about her in his song "Houdini" sent be 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 "'Cause you're never gon' see me Caught sleepin' and see the kidnappin' never did happen Like Sherri Papini, Harry Houdini, I vanish into the thin air as I'm leaving, like"
Why does police keep using lie detectors? Isn't it common knowledge that one can fake the results? (I haven't finished the video yet, this question pops up in my head every time i see a lie detector)
Lie detectors are being used to make suspects to make them nervous because they will ask you like 30 questions and not all of them are relevant to the investigation, so it’s a tool to make people uneasy, or to weed out whether the person is hiding something or not, and maybe to see if the person is innocent. Most of the time it isn’t used as evidence in court but it is used as a tool to apply pressure and to get confessions it’s just up to the detectives whether it’s the person they are looking for or not or someone who as info they need
@@wonderingdegenerate5225 Yeah I thought this too but I feel like it's becoming more known that "lie detectors" are pseudoscience so someone who knew that and was guilty could confidently lie and be more believable as they're not showing signs of stress. I guess it's just another quirk of the American justice system but I'm curious about its reliability and if it causes more harm than help.
@@wonderingdegenerate5225 even the creator of the polygraph has said that lie detectors are bullshit. They don’t do anything except detect nervousness, Matt Orchard has an amazing video on it. Either way all it does is target more vulnerable people who were at a disadvantage to begin with, and I think the risk of it potentially causing a coerced confession are enough to completely write it off as a tool
You can just clench your butthole as you answer every single question and you’ll get a spotless grade, whereas someone who is just anxious but telling the truth can be marked as a liar
@@wonderingdegenerate5225that doesn't mean they're not unreliable though. Also the police have a history of being horrible towards people with autism so stfu.
Oh yeah I remember guys from dreading channel talking abt her and reviewing her footage and the footage of that guy who she was staying with. The guy was actually soooo clueless, he literally spilled all beans after police helped him to catch his parakeet that flew away. Massive golden retriever energy imo.
I watched the Hulu documentary and one thing that really stuck with me was that she was traumatizing her children by the way she was acting “in response” to the “trauma” she experienced from the women in her story. Like, to lie about your disappearance is one thing, but then traumatize your children for a lie? Wtf man.
I remember hearing about this when it went down. I immediately clocked it when she described her 'kidnappers,' but wanted to give her the benefit of the doubt. I thought theres no way someone would lie about this.
For me it was her body language. I knew immediately she was lying. I remember telling my husband she was lying about something and that I thought none of what she was saying was true.
Same! I thought it was odd, couldn’t put my finger on it, but gave her the benefit of the doubt. I too never thought someone would go to these lengths and lie about something so serious.
This one still gets under my skin so much. The trauma she caused her kids during AND after, the women that disappeared near the same time and still haven’t been found… so much more.
In trauma counseling they say that there is no such thing as an “abnormal” response. Every response is normal because you are responding to an abnormal situation. Keith was acting odd, but of course he was. It was an extraordinary situation, how else was he supposed to act?
Another awesome dive into the suspool!! Would recommend a part 2 looking into Denise Huskin's story - a woman who was actually kidnapped after Peppini's story blew up. The police didn't believe them & the state DA even publicly shamed them as liars & refused to help... whole time, her story was actually real 😮💨 netflix did their version called American Nightmare, but I'd LOVE to hear it covered by Professor Petty 🧐 Keep up the great work, appreciate all you do!
I haven’t watched it all so not sure if this is addressed. This is not the first time she accused Hispanic people of doing something to her, in high school she tried saying she was assaulted. It was found to be false, she would go on racist rants about Hispanic people
"Beauty fades, stupid is forever"--Judge Judy Sherri abused and mistreated a real sweetheart that loved her. When she's old, wrinkled, and alone, she'll think back to the man she threw away. Hope the attention was worth it.
On your point about Keith, and how the context might change the viewers' perception of him - there's a thing in dog behaviour, where owners perceive their dogs as having "a guilty expression", when what the dog is actually showing is a reaction to the owner's emotional state. The owner comes home to find an ornament broken, they make an assumption that the dog did it, and when the dog displays "appeasement behaviour" because their owner is upset/annoyed, the owner perceives that as a "guilty expression". We are so, so very vulnerable to this, be it with our dogs, our family, our friends, our colleagues, that it is - to my mind - one of the most universally useful pieces of knowledge that ethology has given us. We are not as good at reading people as most of us think we are (shoutout to my neurodivergent fam, that knows all too well that we, for sure, are rubbish at it).
And also as a neurodivergent person you have much more experience with how easily people can misinterpret your own authentic emotions. There are times I've had outbursts and times I've gone nonverbal and regardless people tend to project their own feelings onto those behaviors. I am high masking, hyperlexic and spent years developing my performance, public speaking, and writing skills and STILL people misunderstand or read incorrect things into my extremely precise communication attempts. And the very fact that I put so much effort into communicating effectively can be seen as suspicious. Ugh. But yes, even though I often do have a good sense about people and whether they're being authentic I also have a lot of humility and awareness about the fact that we can never really know what someone else is feeling or experiencing. All we can do is gather information about someone over time and decide whether or not to trust them
@@helyns1416 Yes! I do not know how NT people avoid complete emotional breakdowns, with the amount of subterfuge they seem to interpret all around them, perhaps it is a comment on how they themselves behave. The older I get, the more I avoid communicating outside of my circle of trust. You are a excellent communicator, it is saddening that you cannot make the best of your effort, and obvious skill, without the stress of other people's assumptions.

"she always lies... 'lied' about abuse in her family growing up" etc... lying habitually like that doesn't spontaneously appear in someone's personality... it doesn't happen in a vacuum. I don't know if the abuse existed with her husband, but it's not hard to see that she maladaptively responded to what she did experience, regardless of what it was. She felt she needed to do something worth mutilating herself over that wasn't monetary profit. That definitely means she is not in a good place. Being unhealthy doesn't make her empathy-worthy or excuse her. It just is.
You can have empathy for someone even if what they did was wrong, or even horrible. I definitely have empathy for her clear mental health issues. You have to have them in order to take it this far. I'm disgusted, but I kind of feel sorry for her tbh.
I watch a lot of true crime and I HATE when cops or lawyers say anything akin to, "they weren't acting right." There is no one right way to act for any situation because everyone is different. Glad this has been brought up here!
I love how you framed looking back at the footage of Keith, and how he looked 'weird' bc he probably wasn't sure what to think of the story, maybe. I imagine he was bursting inside w/ the idea that his wife might be lying to him, but he might not have felt he could say that to anyone. And then being suspected himself! God, I feel really bad for him! It's so crazy to be turned on by your partner, supposedly your best friend, and realize you've been sleeping next to your worst enemy.
The amount of self-harm involved in her scheme kind of makes me think it could be an unusual variant of Munchausen's syndrome. Which is another reason to keep her children well away from her, in case she decides to branch out to Munchausen's by proxy.
@@xXxDeadAnaxXx @trippingthewasteland i’m not a professional in any sense of the word, but that sounds like Munchausen’s to me. I wish her family well and hope they can recover and be healthy even after her impact

My mom was a true crime girly and my introduction into it. We were very perplexed by this case and suspicious of her. Sadly my mom passed away before it all came out, I had to yell out to her when I found out 😂😭
Is the chronic compulsive liar, who fakes a kidnaping and did serious physical harm to herself a victim of possible metal health issues???? Uh YEAH. Is she still responsible for her choices and actions? Yes. She'll get no sympathy from me.
Swoop, hun, PLEASE take the time you need for yourself to recover! The effort you’re putting in for all of us is so sweet, bringing attention to topics that need addressing, but you can’t do that if you run yourself to the ground! Take care of yourself, first, so you can help the world as you have been! You are valid, too!
There's another story somewhat similar to this one, Remember the lady from Atlanta Georgia who pulled over to save a wondering lost toddler on the side of the highway and poof they both vanish, but totally scammed all , to what she did as well...
Fun fact: polygraph tests are highly unrealisable. A couple criminologists hooked up a plant to one and the machine still gave off outputs. It’s usually just a scare tactic the police uses
There's a Netflix documentary called American Nightmare. And it's really sad seeing how fake scenarios like this really do hurt people. That whole story is tragic. But something you would really find interesting, Swoop! ❤
I love how despite there being no excuses, you were able to remind us that Sherri needs help with her mental health and she should receive that, no matter what she did. It reminded me that people often cannot change until they are A) ready to & B) understand that they need the help. Thank you for another excellent dive into the susspool. 😻
I see not much of a mental illness. I see MORAL failure. Purposeful harm to many people with no concern for anyone but herself. The only possible "mental illness" I see is incredible narrissism and compulsive lying. Nobodies fault But HERS. No sympathy.
This girl in high school went “missing” we went on lock down and there where police helicopters and everyone searching for her and the man that “kidnapped” her it turns out when she returned she didn’t want to get in trouble for ditching so she lied and said she was kidnapped and gave a description of tge guy who “took” her. Police found out it was a lie and her family had to pay the city back for all the search efforts
Well I'm glad they had to reimburse the city. Drives me mad how much is waste these liars cause. There's no way to get back the time and manpower, but at least the goverment can get the taxpayers money back and put it towards helping real victims.
This story took all of Northern California by storm. I was up in the Redding area throughout this time. I remember seeing the missing posters everywhere. The poor family went through the worst experience any family can experience. My thoughts are with those poor kids.
I can’t imagine her husband realizing & hearing she did all that- faked her disappearance, let the nation think it was him & have to figure out what to or not to tell her young kids, stick by her, then to find out YEARS later after continuing on with her that she staged it, was with an ex boyfriend & gave HERSELF that level of injury?? Then to again have to think wtf is going on, what about my kids all over again in a maybe even more sinister way!
I have followed this case since she was "found" the day I found out she'd admitted it was all a hoax was a good day. People like this just ruin everything for actual victims.
Thanks again Swoop and co. Love your content. Also, thank you to Swoop personally. Through your empathy and positivity I've been able to find my own self-worth and feel valid. You're a champion.
Apparently this isn’t a one off situation that happens Carlee Russell just did the same thing recently…..except she called 911 said she saw a baby on the side of the road, and faked her own kidnapping.
I can't remember which documentary it was that said this, but Sherri was trouble(d) since she was at least a teenager. When she married Keith, many thought she had finally settled down. I think the reason they gave as to why she did this, was to spend time with her lover without having to explain her absence. But she spend it hurting herself to make her story believable.
i feel so bad for the husband. If my partner dealt with me being kidnapped they would act crazy bc they love me and would want to know where i am - same goes the other way around. I know we are most likely to have this happen with someone you know/a partner but it’s so sad to be in that position and innocent just worried for your loved one
Chocolate is overrated IMO. I have this childhood memory of having an amazing blueberry muffin. I don't know why it was so good, but I'll remember that muffin for the rest of my life
I grew up in Redding, I remember releasing balloons in high school with my parents at the turkey trot. Hearing about my sleepy nowheresville hometown on the news was WILD.
As an abduction survivor myself, I find this absolutely disgusting and sickening on soooooooo many levels. I was gone for about 5 weeks/a month and the fact that she put her family through that is unforgivable in my opinion. I have seen what families go through when someone is missing to an extent (mine wasn't even as bad as some are) and to put her husband and particularly her kids through that? Honestly this is what a trash human looks like.
Regarding the way people react in sad, serious in stressful situations, I laugh in all of those situations. Very uncomfortable and I can’t stop myself. Nit every situation but most of them specifically when I don’t know how to process all the emotions. Got me into quite a lot of trouble and embarrassing situations. First example I had the worst nervous laughs at funerals which probably made me look like a psychopath. It not like I am laughing out loud but I do feel like laughing while trying to speak. And I can’t control it when it happens.
I know Sherri through my old therapist who is Keith’s sister. Sherri probably doesn’t *neeeed* a job because she’s dating a car dealership owner (who people think killed his young wife btw). She’s living in a house owned by him. Sherri is NOW claiming that SHE REALLY WAS KIDNAPPED BY HER EX and that she’s going to come out with her story!!!!!!!!! I don’t know if anyone is talking about that yet, but I found out from Keith’s sister WHO BELIEVES HER AND SUPPORTED HER THE WHOLE TIME BTW. So damn DELUSIONAL the two of them.
I’d love to hear you tell my uncles murder and aunt abduction by the murderer. The murderer is Douglas McClymont, there so much that was brought to light over our family tragedy .
I remember studying about this case and, to this day, I still feel sad and upset for Keith. When Sherri disappeared, the world pointed their fingers towards him. Both online and offline, people called him so many horrible names and accused him of all sorts of things. When the truth came out, people STILL blamed him. There are people who justified Sherri's "need to disappear" by assuming that Keith was abusive and all kinds of horrible stuff. Meanwhile, Keith's interviews and statements from friends and family members strongly implied that Sherri had already been a problematic person since she was a teenager and has a tendency to be violent during arguments. It's more than heartbreaking, especially knowing that she went to her freaking ex-boyfriend which means that she had been freaking cheating on him during her fake disappearance.
Honestly when you described the injuries- I was like am I watching the same yt video- maybe I spaced out and another video started playing but like wow- it’s INSANE to do this to yourself

edit:: her name is stacey smart. she disappeared the same day as sherri.

I remember when she went missing and was found. I was definitely questioning when she claimed two Latina women kidnapped her.
It turns out she was active on a white supremacist blog, so... Definitely she targeted the Hispanic community out of spite.
Imagine how traumatized those 2 poor children must be. They will never get over all of this.

I just watched that. I live in NorCal and remember this case. Unreal what that woman did.
Good grief, that's just evil. I hope those poor kids and her ex-husband are doing better now.
Omg WHAT?!?! Holy crap :(
Sherri couldn’t even be creative enough when it came to describing her “captors.” It’s basically a recreation of the blog post she wrote years ago about being “bullied” by two Hispanic women. She really couldn’t let that go, huh?

How much you wanna bet the bullies from her blog post were ALSO fictitious?
@@khaleesireyna731 that or a couple of girls called her "gringa" and her fragile psyche never recovered.
We need to talk more about her domestic abuse after the "22 days."
She used the lie of being kidnapped to isolate and control her family for 4 years after the incident.
Preach!
Amen! She put her husband through mental hell those 4 years and isolated her poor children. The woman is sick and an absolute nightmare
One of the most interesting thing about this case is analyzing Keith with the knowledge that he is innocent.

@heatheruhrich6136
Facts.
Self-harm is not narcissism. Just because a word is popular doesn't mean we understand it.
Sherri wasn't particularly bright.
It's also ableist as shit and they don't like it when smart British women debunk their bullshit (iykyk).@@lawrencelopez9839
Both horrible people that the town does not like
You can be empathetic about the mental health aspects and also hold someone with mental health issues accountable.
I am loving the purple hair with the pink snakeskin print.

I am also loving the purple hair. It's a very good color on you.

My question is, why did she even think she would get away with it.
People think they're a lot smarter than they really are, myself included.
Narcissism
@@AngelSwty_2for sure we are a rare breed tho believe it or not
The sad thing is that without her story getting so big she might have. The public attention kept the pressure on even years later. The very reasons this story did so much damage was why she was caught.
With her history and how she acted, if Sherri were 20 years younger she would probably be one of those people who fake a terminal illenss on Tiktok.
When you cry, "Wolf!" enough times, people tend to distrust you.
And when enough people cry, "Wolf!", people tend to distrust everyone.
Most of the time the tears are fake
For the husband It sounds like he still was finding it hard to believe she was telling the truth and he just wanted someone to say that they think she's lying so he didn't think he was crazy for thinking it
I can generally find compassion for most people, but in this case, I'll save my compassion for Sherri's many, *many* victims, but most of all her family.
The fact that Eminem even have a verse about her in his song "Houdini" sent be 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I watched the Hulu documentary and one thing that really stuck with me was that she was traumatizing her children by the way she was acting “in response” to the “trauma” she experienced from the women in her story. Like, to lie about your disappearance is one thing, but then traumatize your children for a lie? Wtf man.
Right!!!!!!!!
This case is CRAZZZYYYYY I pray Mr. Pappini and the kids heal and find peace. Because WHAT?!?!

@@khaleesireyna731 ohmyglob I LOVE HIM lol 🥰

I completely agree. Mentally well people don’t fake kidnappings or spend their lives compulsively lying.
Since it seems like she told big lies and acted erratically even before her marriage, I would guess she has some kind of childhood trauma

Giggling at the "le divorce". My kids and I speak French, and that sounds just like my husband when he tries to speak French too.
Being from California, this story originally had me fearful of going on walks, or out alone. She had/has no clue how much she messed up people.
I have followed this case since she was "found" the day I found out she'd admitted it was all a hoax was a good day. People like this just ruin everything for actual victims.

Hi! Could you please share the name of Boze channel? Thank you. 🎉
