  • Here are most (if not all) of the different censorships Resident Evil 8 Village have to offer. There is less than RE7, but there's still quite some.
The game have been released in 3 different ways. The western version (PAL, US) is the equivalent of the PEGI 18, and has no censorships at all. We have in Japan two other versions though.
The CERO Z version, is, in theory, the adult version of the game. But when you compare it with our versions, it has been censored a little bit. We then have the CERO D version.
This version is a response to the japanese laws concerning violence in video games. As a result, this version of the game is heavily censored when compared to other versions such as the occidental one.
In this video, I am offering you a showcase of all the censorships I noticed during my multiple playthroughs I had to shoot for this video. And while there's already a video about it, it lacked some censorships, like the ones shown on the video thumbnail.
I hope you will enjoy it. Leave a like or a comment if you have any questions, that would be really appreciated. It took me a looong time to shoot the footages, and then edit the whole thing ^^

So Cero Z can show Ethan’s heart getting ripped out but can’t show a lycan’s head getting blown off. Makes sense

Japan's censorship doesn't make much sense in that way, but the laws should not show any decapitations or any sorts. The heart being ripped out can then be shown ^^

8:48 Thats pretty crazy to think they actually took the time to change the facial animations depending on the language settings. I wonder if it changes with the other languages as well?
And thanks for the video! Was wondering what the actual differences were with the CERO ratings.

    • @Geekator2012

I wonder as well, but I have to admit, triggering this specific animation was a pain in the ass to do so ... so doing it THREE times was really something time consuming. I almost gave up on this lol
So if there's other differences with other languages, I'll leave it to someone else :P
And you're welcome, I thought it was interesting to document. :)

I feel like they could've handled the censored decapitations a lot better, stuff like using a camera angle that doesn't let you see the stump?

I agree with you, there is some questionnable decisions related to those censorships, but I guess the devs did what they could with the laws and with the time they had in their hands.

Yes the biggest example is in Leon's playthrough where he's trying to save Elliot everywhere else you see Elliott's decapitated legs in Japan and even in a z version Elliott keeps his legs but it's more bloodier

Honestly I'd prefer see black stain or fog on the body part that is cut off like censorships in anime than making game look unreal (cuting doesn't quarter enemies)
Anyway censorship is dumb. Some dumb guys shouldn't censor content or choose what is suitable for adults. They just should just rate the game and that's all. If there's PEGI18 or just another rating system it means it is for adults and we are aware what we can expire in the game. Why someone tells what we can see or what we mustn't see in the game if it is for adults. "This game is PEGI18 it's too gory for 18 years old guys u should cut some content" If someone is sensitive shouldn't just play. What is the idea of censor horror games? Shouldn't it be gory and scary as the creators want? It's just art it's just game not real life

    • @Geekator2012

Censorship is sadly necessary in a country where laws are followed really strictly.
In european countries, we can definetly have such games, because there aren't any laws forbidding this or that. That's why they bother releasing two separate versions in Japan. And despite the cero z in japan still being censored in comparison with our versions, it's their only way to somehow "bypass" the laws there.
It's not really the game company in fault here, more like the country. This trend of version differences started with RE7, and will most likely continue with RE4 Remake. RE3 remake had little to no differences though. Let's hope the same happens for the next game.
