- This heart rending score was composed by Mark Isham for the 1999 Drama/Biography Movie 'October Sky'.
Directed by Joe Johnston, the movie tells the story of Homer Hickman [Jake Gyllenhaal], a small town boy who, inspired by his Teacher Miss Riley [Laura Dern] defies all odds to follow his dream in the backdrop of Cold War.
“Look at it go, Homer! This one’s gonna go for miles...”

Straight chills
I like this words
🥲
One of my favorite themes. It always makes me smile and look up at the sky.
This movie deserves an IMAX re-release for its 25th anniversary in 2024. Such an underrated gem, and it's rare to come across a film theme that's captures hope in the midst of sorrow like October Sky's does.
Yeah it would be awesome to see in IMAX. One of the best movie soundtracks in my opinion.
I’m stunned that once this country dared to dream beyond reality set before us and defy what stood in the way. Accomplishing so much and yet now squandering so much
@@nathanielmacelroy1988 It wasn't "daring to dream" so much as *"we need a bigger missile than the Soviets and FAST."* The space race wasn't motivated by exploration but by building bigger rockets. The moonwalks were a useful side benefit, but not the primary rationale. Skylab and the Space Shuttle were a response to Salyut and Soyuz as well. After the USSR collapsed, international collaboration in long-term micro-g research became the primary rationale for human spaceflight. Preventing the main powers of WW II from openly going to war against each other through space diplomacy, in other words.
And now with nato pushing east and corruption interfering at almost all levels we are pushing the boundaries of a space missile being launched in retaliation by either side? Madness from what was once prodigious
My favorite movie of all time a classic 👍
"And finally, I'd like to dedicate this rocket to my mom and to...
my dad...."
"Look it go homer, this ones gonna go for miles" one of the best lines ever in one of the best scenes in one of the best movies along with one of the best soundtracks of all time
Amen brother
@@orangelemon9786 Amen Brother
Yes and yes. Made me emotional thinking about it haha.
And the miners and Ms Riley watching the white smoke trail from miles away. Oof what an absolute masterpiece of a scene
When Quinten said “this one’s gonna go for miles” he was referring to the rocket, but I think what it really meant is their ability to go into the world and achieve something outside of the mine will go for miles.
10 years ago my Girlfriend and I listened to this in year 1 of college, we were two small town kids who left it all behind to pursue our dreams, I showed her this song and we agreed if we ever got married, this would be our first dance song. Today we have achieved all our dreams, and this past weekend, we danced to this at our wedding as planned. 140 people in the room and she was the only one i was looking at. Beautiful Music, this song emulates the Soul.
Incredible, congrats to you both! What a dream
Congratulations.
Wow. Just wow.
I love it. Magnificent! Congratulations to you both!
oh my gosh. I'm crying. best wishes to you guys!
"I only hope I can be as good a man as you. Sure, Wernher von Braun is a great scientist, but he isn’t my hero."
EVERY TIME I watch that scene, someone happens to be chopping onions nearby...
Happens to me as well, and my wife roles her eyes and says, "Again? How many times have you watched this movie and you still get emotional?!"
@Jason B. Yeah but that was the doctor real name.
@Jason Bored give it a break. Or break me off a peace of that kick kack bar!!!
Because we all want our dads to be our heroes
This movie will always remind me of rainy days at the cabin with my Dad and Little Brother.
This song is so stirring....
It brings pictures of the past to my mind .....a way of life that has all but disappeared and the people who lived that life.....it is beautiful, it is bittersweet, it is nostalgic and I know that the world will never be the way it was before but I knew a lot of people who lived that life and those people who are very dear to me have all passed away
This comment alone tugged at me
Very true, this song for me brings an odd combination of sadness and peace
Such a beautiful thought and so sad this music is so haunting and sweet
I told my husband long ago that when I die, I want this played at my funeral. Meeting those that came before will be such an honor.
Well we can create this time again, but it will take a collective effort, starts with education in my opinion.
Reminds of my mom. RIP. she loved underdog movies like this. Seabiscuit, and Rudy were her other favorites
It reminds me of all the aunts and uncles, grandparents and parents who have gone on ahead......
This song stirs up a sense of longing for those people....
I must have seen this movie a million times and every single time, without fail... I end up balling my eyes out 😂
This movie always reminded me of when my dad was a coal miner
My great grandparents and grandparents generation were. My grandfather went to college and became an engineer and math teacher instead. "No way in hell I was going down there" he once told me. Good choice, as the mines in Northeast PA ended in 1959 and there hasn't been much there since. He still chose to be buried there. I hope to as well.
I went to school to be a miner, or well a mining engineer and this song reminds me of my dreams
Reminds me of when mine was an asshole, and then again when the asshole found his heart haha. Tear up every fuckin time
So underrated…. The book, film, and especially this beautiful piece of music.
I have a family legacy of Polish immigrants that grew up in coal country, of Fayette county Pennsylvania. This movie helped me see what their lives were like, since the mines are long gone.
I now live in the west coast, many of my relatives from back then are old, dying, or dead. But the legacy and memories live on. Now the coal towns of the east coast are in decline, with few jobs and fewer schools.
At the time of writing I am visiting those relatives that are left in Fayette county. I hiked to see the old land were the mine once was. The tipple is long gone, and all that is left is a large green field and a machine shop. The company store is crumbling, and the slag dumps from Allison mine are being reclaimed. If you peer in to the forest, you can see the old railroad car tipple, decaying with time.
Soon all that will be left are the memories. Let them be remembered.
One of my all time favorite scores.
Its so magical, I LOVE IT. TRULY AMAZING
TRULY SPECIAL
It is pretty amazing. I think I hear a slight folk influence in the melody. I'd like to think the composer was trying to allude to the Scots-Irish lineage of the southern Appalachians where the film is set.
One of my all time favourite movies too
@Starlin Castro sure they do
It is rare to come across perfection in life in any form. This musical piece is the type of perfection that you feel with your heart and soul, every fiber of your being. Tears come easily...
It’s been some time since I last heard this. And it brought tears to my eyes. What a lovely, lovely score, and what an inspiring story.
I watched this movie at the theatre when it came out. Not many people went but I thought this was one of the best movies I have ever seen.
Why isn’t this on Spotify
I'd definitely get Spotify if it were haha
Why not ITunes? Masters of the Air is on there. Even Field of Dreams, heck an entire James Horner collection.
@@highball5550 itunes sucks compared to the apps we can use today
this song reminds of the beauty, the innocence, the joy that people feel....its time we get back to that people....leave pop culture behind and go for the beauty, the innocence and the joy....
Not only is this movie legendary in my heart, but every movie set in that time period really shines.
"Where will you go?"
"Myrtle Beach.."
X F I love his subtle smile after she walks away hahaha!
I read that in her accent.
BRILLIANT piece of music thank you Mark lsham
It is! It should be on iTunes but it’s not = / ugh
When the teacher doesn't have a lesson planned so they roll in the ol' CRT tv on a cart and put this movie on but you only see the first half bc the class period isn't long enough for the whole movie 😌
One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever recorded and so fitting for this amazing film. Tears well in my eyes every time I listen to this. Especially during the end montage when it shows the footage of the real Miss Riley and mentions her passing. What a beautiful and inspirational soul she was. R.I.P. to Frieda Riley and the others who've passed away over the years.
Surprisingly didn't find similar movie score from Mr. Isham since this film.
Waterworks right away with this theme. Such a great film! ❤
I remember watching this when I was in 6th grade science class for rockets. 28 now and this song brings it all back and just what a incredible movie honestly. If you really never give up….there’s no telling what you can achieve. I was ADHD and ADD and now I’m a Nurse
Keep dreaming and don’t let it go 🙏🏽
This is still one of the most nostalgic and greatest movie soundtrack themes ever made ❤️
If you like this, look up the outer worlds theme
Especially Hope & Journey's End
“I’d like to dedicate this rocket, to my mom, and to... ... ...my dad.”
And then the music swells and oh my God if I don't lose it
Any other good movie like October sky, which is not very popular
and to my mama too
@@sudeepacharjee6459 check out big fish
@@sudeepacharjee6459Rudy, Seabiscuit, Good Will Hunting and Shawshank Redemption, to name a few.
One of the most beautiful movie themes of all time.
Definitely one of the best movies I have ever seen, based on fact.
This movie shows that if you work hard enough for your dreams and work towards what you want in life it can happen just keep going don't let anyone stop you from achieving your dreams!
Hell ya!
One of the most inspirational movies. What a great story to prove that you can create your opportunity. Love how all the boys made something of themselves. And love the sacrifice their families made. Per americana
Why on earth isn’t this song on any music service?
Jake gyllenhaal was amazing in this film.
I bought DVD. One of my most favorite film of all time ❤
Still one of the greatest and most emotional, inspirational films of all-time. This score perfectly compliments the film and accentuates the emotion. Never fails to move me to tears by the end. Still one of the most beautiful, heartfelt pieces of music ever and it was truly the finishing touch to this brilliant film. It's emotional and nostalgic at the same time, evoking a simpler time in the world and perfectly suiting the setting and themes. R.I.P. to all of the amazing people depicted in this film who've passed on over the years but who's memory and inspiration will never be forgotten.
Just like Itzhak Pearlman on Schindler's List, so beautiful and moving. What powerful music they made.
Awesome this theme song is so beautiful. I also watched this movie in science class. It was very good.
Muy buena película una música de melodía fantástico excelente dejo mi líke
A masterpiece which conveys a wonderful message of hope in the midst of sorrows.
This song always made me want to cry. I think of all the miners that have lost their lives in accidents and think how this occupation is slowly dying. For some towns, it is their heart and soul. They cannot survive without it.
Fun fact, the book is called rocket boys and the author refused to call the movie anything else. Till they showed him October Skies which is an anagram. It spells Rocket Boys and he was okay with that
The beautiful symphony that is october sky and life. STAND and be COUNTED for yesterday is over and the future looks bright with possibilities. Whatever obstacles you face dont let them hold you back from your future.
Thank you for saying such a thing- definitely always helps reading this from others. Idk what it is, but this tune has always been an inspiring and motivating sound. Brings the emotions out too
This music brings back a lot of memories
What sort of?
Man . This movie is so great . No matter what I love it . This song hits so good . Fantastic film
I can't find this on Spotify :( thank goodness it's on here!
Sara Peymon i was just looking for it on there yesterday! Bummer it isn’t
lts called Coalwood
MARK ISHAM'S Finest hour!!!
Mark Isham is underrated as a musical composer
I dedicate this music to the James Webb telescope which was launched today, and all those who were left behind in their Coalwood. May it go for miles!
When the low brass comes in at 2:22, it brings in such a rush of emotion. Such a beautiful tone.
One the best movies I have ever seen 🙂
What a wonderful score
Absolutely beautiful. This theme played in a dream I had about spending time with my dad and it brought me to tears.
I remember learning this piece for high school orchestra
this was a great song to use honoring the dead in the Oak Lawn IL tornado of 1967 i too am a survivor of this horrific disaster as i always say i looked the grim reaper in the eye and he turned away i am here to tell the heart felt story LOLa Productions did a excellent job using this score it is sad and fitting for the terror we saw that day,
Doing some remodeling in my bathroom and played this…. Can’t stop crying… 😢😢 😭
Everytime I listen to this song I feel like I wanna cry
I end up crying lloloololo
thank you for putting this music up its one of my favorite pieces of music ever.
I liked this film a lot because it was such a true story for people living in these small towns in the northeast and mid west. You don't have these amazing dreams, in reality you just want to escape the small town you live in.
The part where his teacher looks out the window at the rocket climbing into the sky really gets my allergies flowing.
Incredible
This is literally one of my favorite movies ever and I love this music. I get extremely attached to the scores of movies and this is one of my favorite, most nostalgic pieces. I have a playlist with all my favorites but this isn’t available on apple:(
This movie always makes me cry 😭
Same. I'm always bawling by the end. A testament to how powerful this movie and the music score is when it can evoke such strong emotions from you.
Just saw it again this morning. Set it fot DVR tomorrow. Music is fabulous.
I love the guy who made this song.
How the hell could you give this a "THUMBS DOWN"?
What a great movie and I'm from West Virginia myself just makes it that much better along with good scenes throughout the theme song alone makes a person tear up by itself just makes a person think of their own lives does me anyway
I'm from Indiana and the film Hoosiers is effective in the same way this one was. So was Stand By Me. All three great films with great themes.
Mountaineer's go first!
Every time I listen to this I cry like a baby
i love this song, this movie was really inspiring, thanks for uploading this master piece without any annoying intro or outro but just posting it as it is, its pure gold
Reminds me of 'The Outer Worlds' soundtrack, soooo good
Music is beautiful
Super Fantastic Song 😊👍👍😎
music brings the most happiness in the world...good music....
This is in my top 5 best films!
Every dreamer's story is somewhat similar to Homer hickam. Never Lose hope people, you're gonna reach your destination one day
beautiful
I, too, became a scientist, after growing up in a steel town. I, too, was inspired by my grade school science teacher.
Teachers...your influence affects so many other people in ways you will never know. Thank you all. Love you, Miss Ruth
my favourite movie of all time
I wish movies were still like this today and not pushing some sort of agenda.
Fav movie of all time
I don't know why❤
Fantastic movie.🚀
1:30-1:45 gets me every time. those perfect harmonies
My best song
Where would you go? Myrtle Beach.
Criminal this soundtrack isn’t available anywhere. It’s like it never existed
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. What an incredible and inspiring story! Homer is a bit of a family hero for my siblings, myself and parents. We LOVE that family and his story! Check out his book Rocket Boys if you haven’t read it. I don’t love to read and I couldn’t put it down!
This song is not on Spotify or Apple Music, but you still might like the song from artist Mark Isham-Sense of Touch. It’s from the movie CRASH Ft. Sandra Bullock, Don Cheadle and Matt Dillon.
He did it
They did it 😭😭
Story bears some similarity to A Bronx Tale -- two father figures, a vague warring-sides-of-boy's-soul theme, an urge to escape, but also not to let the homestead/family down. The father-son scenes stay with me, but so do the increasingly-ill math teacher bits. Good flick.
Life doesn't always go the way you want it to sometimes, but there will be the times where a Solar Eclipse happens.
Imagine if this score was in Lord of the Rings...love mark isham!!
if u searched for this, u are special
Nice
Shout-out McDowell county, WV ✌️💪
I’m not crying, you’re crying.
This was a rlly good movie

It's a tragedy this song isn't on Spotify. Why?
"I only hope I can be as good a man as you are... Dr VanBraun is a great scientist, but he isn't my hero."
