  • Time to submit my entry for "One Musical Scene" a prompt created by ‪@NandovMovies‬ in where you pick on scene from a movie and look at the music in regards to it and explain why it makes the scene so special and so I decided to go with the "Heaven's Light/ Hellfire" sequences from Disney's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", I hope you all enjoy and if you do spank all the buttons.

It 's always striking to me how the chorus from Hellfire is the same as the main theme of the entire movie. The musical notes are exactly the same, but perverted into something darker and more sinister.

I love this song (Hellfire is just amazing) but the movie's deviation from the source really shows its Disney-fication of the themes. There are no truly healthy relationships in Hugo's book, Phoebus and Frollo lust after Esmerelda without considering her actual wants/needs, Quasimodo recognizes her kindness but it is a one-sided and unreciprocated love, and then everyone dies in the end, save for the playboy Phoebus who spends the remainder of his life unhappily married.

Don’t forget that Esmeralda in the book is pretty shallow and vapid, only wants Phoebus because he’s handsome, and fails to appreciate Quasimodo’s feelings for her simply because he’s ugly.

@@wolfpackleaderalpha I mean, Esmerelda in the books is also a teenager who don't have the best judgements regarding their first loves. Plus, she does becomes friends with Quasimodo despite her initial fear of him.

@@bipedalcynodont962 yes it is. I don't know where it's from but I and many others just say some stupid quote that wasn't even in the movie and think it's funny. Usually it includes the name of the Movie which is pretty cliche."it's hunchin time" comes from Morbius where people online started saying "I loved when Morbius said "it's morbin time"' which in all fairness does sound pretty cool, but it too wasn't actually in the movie. You could call it the mandella effect where people start saying something that's not true and then it becomes a commonl accepted fact. When Nelson Mandella got out of jail everybody was confused because they all thought he died years earlier in prison. That's why the effect is called that. Nowadays "It's [...]-time" is just a meme and everybody (except you apparently) knows that it's not true but with Morbius people actually did, and some still do, believe it or atleast aren't sure

I feel it also worth mentioning regarding the contrast between Quasimodo’s selfless love for Esmeralda versus Frollo’s selfish lust, is that it is also a key reason why Quasimodo going from being heartbroken when discovering that Esmerleda has fallen in love with Phoebus, to accepting her decision for that in the end, is so important to the story (despite several petulant outcries from the audience about how this “stigmatizes deformed people by saying that they are always doomed to lose the love interest to someone else who is more attractive”.)
Because it’s a major defining character trait of Quasimodo that not only makes him completely opposite to Frollo, but also shows a level of maturity that is rarely seen in most fictional characters in general.
Frollo’s mindset is that if he can’t have her, no one else can, and she must therefore die. But Quasimodo ultimately being capable of putting aside his own feelings and going out of his way to save her life (not just at the climax, but also when he goes with Phoebus to the Court of Miracles to warn her that Frollo’s coming) is his way of showing that he genuinely loves her and respects her, rather than just being in love with the idea of her being there to complete HIS life. Because unlike Frollo, he doesn’t get possessive of her or look for any personal reward, as he shows that he prioritizes her well-being and happiness.
Plus, he stops being jealous of Phoebus and no longer sees him as a threat to him getting the girl, but rather as someone else who sees Esmeralda as a human being and loves her enough to try to save her even at his own expense, without forcing himself upon her. Quasimodo is humble enough to recognize that Esmeralda loving Phoebus doesn’t mean that she doesn’t also love him (just in a different way from a regular lover), and that her having more than one man in her life who would fight to the end to save her, means all the more for her, not less for himself.

I agree with your opinion about how Quasi is able to accept Esmerelda’s feelings for Phoebus and understanding she still deeply cares about him, just not romantically. I’m personally am not a big Esmerelda and Phoebus shipper and kinda wish Esmerelda ended up with Quasi instead. The main issue I personally have with her ending up with Phoebus is he doesn’t really do anything huge or important in the story. I know he saved a family from a fire amongst other acts to fight against Frollo’s forces, but it felt like if you removed him from the story it wouldn’t change anything aside who Esmerelda ended up with. Some have tried explaining the reason why Esmerelda fell for Phoebus instead was because he saw and treated her as a normal person and wasn’t prejudiced against her people, instead wanting to declare justice for them. And I know Quasi’s feelings are more of an overwhelming feeling of kindness he’s never experienced before, so he misinterprets her kindness as love. But Esmerelda and Phoebus’s kiss in the bell tower is honestly one of my least favorites because of how irritating it is to see “only hot guys get the girl” Like in Cinderella 2 during Anastasia’s love story, she exclaims in frustration Cinderella is so beautiful and always had it easy when it came to her looks, while Anastasia feels ugly because of her facial features being deemed unattractive.

@@kristinahuchison2511 Well I do not agree with any of that, Quasi should have refused to accept Esmeralda feelings for Mr. handsome perfection and come to the conclusion that she doesn't care for him on the grounds that he is ugly and only wants handsome guys. I'm not a big fan of that either, in fact i openly hate it, it's outrageous, it's unfair and I really want Quasimodo to be with Esmeralda, so much that i don't like the entire movie because of it. three reasons why i don't like it, one, that knight was not the main character, two, Esmeralda fell in love with him just as Quasi was about to confess his felling's for her and three, it makes it seem like that to get the girl in a Disney movie, you have to be handsome.

    • @travisboutilier2220

Well I don't care about the contrast, I just want Quasimodo to be with Esmeralda, he should have refused to accept her decision, I don't care if it's important to the story or not. that kind of so called maturity isn't needed. at least Frollo doesn't give up without a fight, unlike Quasi, who is too selfless and a bit of a pushover, he Deserved to be with Esmeralda as for all those years of suffering. he should have stayed jealous of Phoebus and continue to see him as a threat to him getting the hot girl, seeing him as a handsome guy that gets all the luck and that Esmeralda loves for being handsome and rich. Esmeralda should be romantically in love with Quasimodo, loving him as a friend was second rate.

Hey, I just wanted to let you know that "G*psy" is considered a slur against the Romani people. I don't blame you for using it the way you do, especially since it's used so freely in the movie itself. I feel like the broader recognition of it as a slur has been slowly growing over the past decade or so. Just figured you should know!

One of the smartest things the Disney-licensed stage version did was cut that song out completely. Instead, Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz wrote a new song where Quasimodo imagines a stained-glass figure of Saint Aphrodisius (a first-century martyr who sheltered the Holy Family during the flight into Egypt) coming to life and encouraging him to help Esmeralda. That inspires Quasimodo to team up with Phoebus to find the Court of Miracles, so the song has a much greater impact on the plot than "A Guy Like You" does.

While I agree that Hellfire is absolutely AWESOME, I feel the character of Frollo in total in the movie is actually not that interesting as a villain due to being somewhat one-dimensional. The version of Frollo in the broadway musical is a lot better, they improved on the character massively there.
