Walt very clearly stated that Snow White & the other of his films weren’t made for kids but the child in all of us. This is very much alive in Fantasia.

The black centaurs are really tragic. What bothers me about them is not just their appearance, but how they're presented as "cute but homely" contrasted with the beautiful centaurettes, and are not deemed important enough to be paired off--which for some reason was the apparent goal. I otherwise loved the king, gods of Olympus, and pegasui in Pastoral Symphony.
The Ave Maria also had been photographed in the wrong resolution so the poor team had to redo the whole thing AGAIN last-minute.

@@ThirrinDiamond weirdly enough, Coal Black is less racist in that sense. The heroes in that cartoon are black, they're not subservient or directly compared to any white characters, and they get to have a romance of their own (of course it leans WAY too far into sexualizing her and mocking black men's appearance). It's sad to think that was about the best representation black people had at that time.

The pastoral segment has always been my favorite, and I never knew about Sunflower and Atika until my adulthood. I always loved the zebra centaurettes though, and thought they were beautiful. I also wondered why they didn't have male counterparts to be paired off with. Looking at it now it hurts, and does tarnish the who piece, but I still love it. I just now love it with my eyes open and acknowledging the flaws.

I don't think it's a problem that centaurs are paired off according to their colors. I believe it wanted to add harmony to that romantic scene emphasizing that everyone got the partner that fitted them best, so that they would be happy. Different colors in a couple would have foreshadowed conflict, and the sequence wasn't cut out for that. The drama is reserved for the thunderstorm.

As a kid, I always stopped watching Fantasia before the final piece. It unnerved me so much that sometimes I had nightmares, didn't matter if it was night or daytime. Even now as an adult, it still unnerves me. Though I sometimes try to watch through it to the end.
Personally, I think I would have liked if Disney came out with a new Fantasia maybe once every 10-20 years. As it stands, we have Fantasia and Fantasia 2000. I wish there were enough adaptations of Fantasia to spend a day watching and listening to the masterpieces. God knows Disney produces enough garbage that if they scaled back on some of the garbage, they would have the resources to produce one excellent film every 10-20 years featuring some of the best classical pieces.

Practicality wise, I'm surprised they didn't just reanimate the two centaurs with updated designs. I get the feeling that would actually be easier and more fluid than just rubbing them out with artifacts of their roles remaining, and heck Disney was already a pro at recycling animation onto new characters to save time.

The last bit in this episode with the Mickey and Stokowski handshake reminded me of something only a few people know, but animation nerds may find interesting. I attended CalArts with many of the people who would go on to the big time in the Disney renaissance. For the student film exhibition one year, Mark Henn animated a parody of that handshake using our legendary design teacher Bill Moore as the conductor. Bill had assigned the class to produce an abstract film like in Fantasia, and he wasn't aware that they were adding the ending sequence. He was known for his vicious demeanor and demanding standards, and if memory serves, in Mark's animation Bill tapped his cigarette ashes into Mickey's hand. Many students including Joe Ranft worked on producing it in color without Bill's knowledge. The whole short film was beautifully done. I hope someone can track down that little bit of animation history. Thanks.

It would be amazing to see what animation would be like today if variables allowed Fantasia to succeed in its initial debut. What it would be like if creators like Walt Disney were able to produce unique and inspiring works of art to their hearts’ content during their life without fear of failing, budgets and the limitations of their time.
I hate to always be like “movies these days are not as good as they used to be” but in this instance it seems like company’s are spending billions in order to capture a glimpse of magic and wonder that movies like Fantasia evoke.
But maybe it was for the best.

I’d already enjoyed Fantasia for the unique masterpiece that it was, but seeing more and more analyses being created to discuss its magnificence and milestones that it created for film is always a fascinating subject to me. 🤔
Fantasia is a cinematic series of paintings come to life, and while there are still some segments that leave me with a strange nostalgic frightening sensation of watching it when I was quite young: the fudge man with a purpose, the volcanic eruptions and destruction of nature’s creation, and of course Chernabog living his best life, it doesn’t stop me for one moment to appreciate the true beauty and rapture the movie itself brings to viewers, whether they’re bored to sleep or awed beyond their imagination. 🧐
I’m currently watching a series called Animation Pilgrimage done by a RUclips Creator couple Tennelle & Whitney Flowers, and hearing their thoughts on Fantasia as well as all of the other current films being released in the 1940s opened my eyes even more to how complicated, arduous, frustrating, yet breathtaking of a feat it is to create a motion picture film. 📽🎞
Learning more of what went into creating Fantasia for what it is today, and struggling to wrap my mind around the fact that this came out 82 years ago, nearing almost 100 years now, created with only the limited technology of cell animation brought forth with the blood, sweat, tears, and raw talent of Disney’s animation team and other staff to create the movement and lighting effects like you mentioned with the snow flake segment and the stars in the village from Pinocchio in your previous analysis video, not to mention the hand crafted clocks as well. 😮

Hearing your well written, well thought out, passionate and engaging commentary about some of my favourite childhood films is what I look forward to the most in your videos, opening my eyes to new themes and interpretations that I’d never considered before until listening to you speak, so I just wanted to sincerely thank you for making these videos, it really means a lot to me. 💖
I hope you’ll be able to take a well-deserved rest after tackling such a large project like Fantasia of all things, and that you’ll be able to gain more and more followers after discussing the historical importance of this movie, you deserve each and every one gained! :)))) 🥳
I’ll be sure to share this video with my friends and family in hopes to bring you more, but let’s hope that the unpredictable algorithm will lure in more viewers like it did me~ 😸

Worthy the wait! Amazing video essay on Fantasia! The most artistically ambitious and beautiful Disney film!
There is a great anedocte about the Ave Maria sequence from the book Disney: The Illusion Of Life, by Frank Thomas and Ollie Jonhston. They say an eartquake happened, and the team shooting the sequence was left with two options: finish the sequence, but it would have been impossible to fix it in time if the earthquake had indeed caused damage, even though it looked intact, or they could shoot the sequence from the beginning, and it would be ready just barely before the premiere.
They went with the second option. And completed it literally hours before the film's premiere. The film of the sequence had to be transported carefully in a plane travel by someone from Disney, and then "glued" to the rest of the film before the premiere!

Disney sure is hypocritical for putting a disclaimer on the film but not presenting the original cut. Then again, that's been the case for a while now. I believe that Sunflower and Otika should be restored for both the sake of film preservation and as a teaching tool. If we sanitize history, we will fail to learn the lessons it offers and we all know what happens if we fail to learn our history. Hell, even the Library of Congress and the National Film Registry got the uncensored version.
Besides it's the job of the parents to teach the kids and not a giant corporation's in the realm of social matters. Plus isn't art meant to provoke some sort of feeling whether it be positive or negative.

I don't know if it was an oversight on Disneys part if they tried to erase it, me being from Sweden and all, but those caricatures were very much still present not too long ago. Funny thing is that I as a young kid though Sunflower were just a cute and expressive character, learning that her design was intended as meanspirited as an older kid were kinda like a stab in the back. There I was enjoying Disney movies and relating to odd centaurs and the whole time racist adults were laughing their asses off. Thanks for giving me trust issues, Disney.

I did not see "Fantasia" until I was an adult when a boyfriend and I went to see it on a big screen. We..were..blown..away! I have been reminded of various scenes throughout my life. Once, I even recreated the 'Sorcerer's Apprentice' in a dream with the current boyfriend as Mickey!
    .............
I remember being uncomfortable with the zebra Centaurs. If the minstrel Centaurs had been left in the film version I saw, it may have irredeemably sunk "Fantasia" in my eyes. Sure, historians and social critics should have the unexpurgated version available to them, but I am relieved that at least the most offensive characters have been purged from the version that so many little kids will see.

I don't know about damage, exactly, but I do think that removing the little black centaurs was the right decision. I am not usually one to champion censorship in any form - ordinarily, I would rather see the artist's true, original work, warts and all, whether or not those warts may ruffle some feathers (even if those feathers are my own). It can, and often does, damage the pacing and flow of a work when it is messed around with - far better, in my opinion, to risk offense and see what was originally meant to be seen.
But there are exceptions, and this is a big one. I've seen both versions of the scenes with the little black centaurs, and they add NOTHING. Whether or not one considers them offensive, there is plainly and simply no reason for them to be there. They're not funny; they add no dramatic touches; they have no significant interactions with other characters; they don't compliment the music like everything else in the sequence does - and from a practical point of view, they don't affect the pacing in the slightest, so their presence or absence makes absolutely no difference. They are completely pointless - AND there's the matter of those designs, which, yeah. I've seen worse, but there's no denying they're a bit much.
I would champion them, regardless, if they added any of the things I mentioned, if they WERE funny, if they DID affect the pacing or the drama. I would fight to the death for them to be kept in, offensive or not, for I do believe that important works SHOULD be seen in their entirety, whether or not they offend - after all, unless we see both the sins and the virtues of the past, we cannot learn from it. But in this case, I agree with Walt's decision to cut them; it was an edit that should have been made in the first place. They were a mistake - far better to excise that mistake, and enjoy 'Fantasia' for the near-flawless masterpiece that it otherwise is.

It's clear to see that you are a fan, but one also willing to look at them critically as well.
Anyways, please keep up the good work!

Thank you for this incredible essay, I couldn't agree more with your feelings on the film as a whole.
I know it will be a very long time before we get to Fantasia 2000, but I hope you'll consider taking a part of the video (if not a separate video altogether) to talk about "Destino," the collaboration between Walt and Salvador Dali. Incredible that it went untouched for almost 6 decades before Roy Disney breathed life into it again and all it got in F2K was a snarky little mention of its existence.

I'm really glad you also addressed the racial problems in Fantasia and not shy away from it. You did it in depth and respectfully. And I really appreciate that, that and also talking about how complicated it is on Disney trying to solve the problem.
Really liked how you talked about how the failure of Fantasia was temporary and later does come back as a success. That and it will live countlessly in US culture for decades if not centuries. Including the little bit of Fantasmic at the end was so good. And never knew Walt Disney really disliked listening to classical music, and Fantasia was his way of exploring it was honestly great. It's a great reminder that visualizing music isn't a bad thing (mainly for me because I'm still unlearning some elitist bs where "visualizing music and feeling the emotions = dumb/not smart enough to trULY appreciate music" my band teacher taught me. And I really needed that, badly). I enjoyed finding your channel and watching it til 5:30 in the morning (I've messed up my sleep schedule for a long time) and look forward to whenever your next video comes out. Some of the imagery in this movie reminds me of George Melies Movies particularly the part where Sorcerer Mickey is on the cliff controlling the stars, and the very end of the Pastoral Symphony where Diana shoots a comet using the moon as a bow. If you watch his films, he has a lot of images of comets and goddesses hanging around moons. It’s an interesting comparison and I recommend them.

Fantasia is my favorite Disney movie. My grandma Rose loved classical music, especially opera, and made a conscious effort to share it with me and inspire my own like for it. Fantasia was the only Disney VHS she owned, so it is intrinsically linked in my mind to her. Whether I was at her house because I was too sick for school, or it was a holiday, it was likely Fantasia was on. It even worked its way into our Christmas traditions, playing in the background as we baked cookies. I remember watching it one Christmas Eve before opening presents, and how it capping off with Ave Maria felt perfect in our Roman Catholic Italian American family. I remember sneaking away during Night On Bald Mountain to peak at the presents and realizing I was going to get a stuffed animal before scampering back to the family room. (I still have that stuffed animal, a Velveteen Rabbit my two year old son now loves) I also remember the joy I had playing Kingdom Hearts to see the Fantasia mushroom turned into the only non-lethal Heartless, who wanted to play charades or jump with you (ok, there was a lethal version, but Imma call him Bruno and not talk about him) or when the Chernabog showed up for a random bossfight. The musical cue had me screech with joy.

1.love ur videos 2. i cant wait for u to tackle Peter Pan more importantly my Favorite minor Character Tigerlily . and more importantly how badly her tribe was protray.. she's a great character in her own right: brave , loyal and surprisingly not the jealous type! WENDY insulted her by implying that she and her tribe were savages cuz she was jealous of her beauty and that she kissed her Peter Pan "thank u". and if toon town was a real place .. well the natives of neverland would never insult themselves like that! Wendy needs to be called out.! but don't suggest cancel culture for Tigerlily cuz she's a toon . she'll live forever unless u give her the dip treatment. do give her respect but acknowledge what Walt and his staff did wrong.

I rewatched Fantasia yesterday, after about 20 years. My brother and I have always LOVED this movie. Ever since we first watched it as kids (we even had the VHS tape), its sounds and images have stuck with us.
Fantasia played a part in the development of our imagination and creating our little inner worlds. The dreamscapes we have always imagined as kids (and as adults) are strongly tied to all the beautiful sequences in Fantasia.

This video delivered on what it set out to do, however, I was easily swayed as Fantasia has always had a prized spot on my shelf. No Disney movie has captured my imagination as Fantasia did. I have never had a strong interest in classical music, but many of those sequences have stuck with me for years. The magna scene in the beginning of the dinosaur sequence was one of the most terrifying for me - the ultimate violence and destruction from the earth itself that led to the birth of the vast prehistoric world, almost as uninhabitable as the magma with its lurking dangers. Your narration was wonderful, and I hope we get to hear what your #1 video is!

    • @SamsonSilvo
      @SamsonSilvo 7 месяцев назад +3

That is pretty much exactly the reason. When Disney tried to restore the original uncut live-action intros for Fantasia's DVD release in 2000, they were only able to restore the visual parts of the film negatives. The last release of Fantasia to contain Deems' actual voice is the 1990 remaster used in the VHS and Laserdisc releases, which were sourced from a prior rerelease from 1948 that heavily edited the intros compared to the original 1940 release in order to streamline its runtime.
(I honestly preferred the 1990 version's intros myself because they don't spoil every animated segment before they happen, ironically largely *because* of said edits...)
