Something a little bit different for today's video - the National Autistic Society got in touch with me to ask why their Autism Hour is important to our family. I had intended to just do a short reply, but apparently it's even more important than I realised, and relates directly back to the time Andy had a meltdown in the Co-op.
The National Autistic Society’s Autism Hour, supported by The Entertainer, takes place between 6 and 13 October. Find out more by visiting: www.autism.org....

ABOUT KEVIN CHAPMAN
Hi, I'm Kevin Chapman, a full-time RUclipsr, author, podcaster, speaker and occasional teacher from Peterborough, UK. As part of my daily vlog I release new videos every day at 5pm UK time with topics including life as an autism family, conventions and geek culture, technology, education and tutorials and entrepreneurship.
When I left my full-time as a Computer Science teacher in July 2017, my partner, Anna, was trapped in our house by our son Andy, who is autistic and had refused to go to school for 18 months. Our daughters Lucy and Amy and our dog Dave hardly saw me because I was always working to try and solve all our problems! Today I'm a full-time content creator who's always at home when my kids get home from school (all our kids!) and Anna has been able to return to university. This channel is the story of my family's ongoing journey as family vloggers! Previously known as lollujo Vlogs.

My son loves 'Quiet hour' at morrisons! He is like a completely different child because he doesn't have as much sensory overload. Just wish alot more places would do it on a regular basis because it would make mine and my sons life alot easier
I finally met another special guy getting naked when upset. My teen under very stressful situations will do the same. I love that you understand what he goes through. 😊
Evening kev. The Co-Op video is how I found ur channel. I saw it about 2 days after it was uploaded. I HATE going shopping. Wen I go shopping I have to wear my sunglasses(to try and take the brightness out of the lighting) I also have to wear ear defenders( to muffle the REALLY loud music and loud ppl). Morrison’s here in Grantham have recently had a refurb and it’s so hard to find anything. So that’s added to my major anxiety etc wen we’ve been to get my weekly shop. With the autism hour coming up I’ve set a goal of finding a shop somewhere near me that’s doing the event and trying to go shopping without my ear defenders for the 1st time in as long as I can remember.
Hope you and the family are well. As always sending you loads of AUsome love. 💜💙💪🏻
I work in Morrisons, and we have been doing "quiet hour" in all of our stores, It works a charm, I love it, and everyone loves it once they understand what's going on! We dim the lights, turn off music, no announcements are allowed to be made for the hour and no beeping from the tills from 9-10am every Saturday.
I really need to go as I have Autism 👍😀
What a great idea!
That is fantastic
I love this concept!! Hopefully Asda and other stores will catch on soon!:)
@@colleenc1993 Yeah I went to one of the quiet hours near me and I recommend it. It was really good!
Hiya Kevin!! Hope you, Andy and Anna are doing well. This video couldn't have explained the purpose of the autism hour is a better way... Literally the nail head has been hit so hard that it can't be hit anymore 😂 Keep on doing what you are doing!!!
Thanks Andy, glad you enjoyed it.
Sending Anna extra hugs. I can imagine what she was feeling at that time. Andy has come so far since then.
🫂🌈🏳️🌈👍
How can people dislike honestly
In the Netherlands we now have one hour a week from like 08:00 to 09:00 where the lights are dimed, the shop isn’t refilled, the register don’t beep and so on.
I don’t know if it’s specially for autistic people, but it’s for everyone who suffers from sensory overload
I fully support it. But in my opinion they should do it every day, it’s just 1 hour
Deven Youandi which store does this? I live in The Netherlands and this would be very helpful for my son.
1medic2 volgens mij de Albert Heijn
In my shop, we had someone have a melt down like that. We closed the isle they were down and did what we could to help.
VERY GOOD TEASHIRT MY MAN
I JUST GOT RICKROLLED WITHOUT THE MUSIc
m_leff.06 I kept reading his shirt for half of the video not knowing what it meant but after reading your comment I just burst out laughing
m_leff.06 ugh my fycking g II-/////////////// :)
Tara Shiels 👌🏻 fave song?
JacobWithA YK lmao
m_leff.06 BROOOOO ||-//
There's a shop near me that turns all lights and music off and is basically extremely calm and quite especially for autistic people for an hour every Saturday every month all year round it's great! As I'm autistic and find shopping difficult sometimes
: : you are such a great advocate & educator Kevin. Also, I can only imagine what that was like for both Anna & Andy. Wow. No fun at all. So important to raise awareness! : :
Just found your channel about 2 weeks ago and since then I’ve been none stop watching. I’ve definitely watched more than half your videos already😳
I don’t think I’ve seen one.. But are you able to a video on Andy’s Night routine & Morning routine?
Thanks for all the videos!!
We'll try and sort something at some point!
I love it! Different but fantastic mate! Perhaps they might do the same week for North America? That is a really interesting story and I am glad Anna got lucky with service from the Co-op workers! By the way, I love the shirt! It reminds me of the song that my annoying friend used to play all of the time, LOL. See you in the next vlog! ✌🏾️💙
I totally support the idea of autism hour in supermarkets and I really think it will help adults with autism or parents who have autistic children, and I hope that more supermarket chains will become more autism friendly. 👍👍😊😊😊
Hi Kevin Morrison's in jarrow in South Tyneside North East are supporting autism hour it is every Saturday between 9am and 10am since the beginning of August keep up the good work
Hey Kevin I’m from Ireland and my local supermarket does autism night and it’s amazing
Thanks for that Kev one of my friends sons has a form of autism so this was very interesting
We are doing this at skl rn and we are going to write a letter to the local mall about doing an autism awareness
I have autism and when I go to a shop (sometimes with friends or on my own or with my parents) I get upset about the fact that they seem to always have different layouts in each shop and I don't know what to expect
I hate when the store move things around.. I think they do that to keep you shopping longer..
the reason shops do it is so you look around and buy more stuff
At least at my local Tesco vape appear to where they change their aisles round put forward some of our products have moved and then write it out in very bad handwriting where they are now
Wow! very interesting vlog. autism hour sounds great. bet anna has alot of relief he doesn't do that anymore. Do you think Andy will grew out of you promising something to get him out of the house to where he will leave the house without expecting anything?
My son's meltdowns last hours...up to 5 hours.
Poor thing hope he gets better
Hi kev loving the vids keep it up 😊
for the 3rd time, i got rickrolled by a top
Would love our company to do this but customers are too unpredictable and when you have demo electronics that need to be turned on to sell that are noisy it won’t happen, guess that’s why we have a website
I swear andy’s hair has grown loads in the last few days
Refreshing for ages x
I total get where you are coming from I work at a school just for austic children and I think there should be more out their
Thank you
Is Andy in year 9?
@KevinChapman you have a really cool t-shirt on.
What happens if you go to the shop and it not autism hour because sometime you will need thing when the hour is over
Thats the same with me
I have very mild autism so mild you can't really notice
Rick Astley shirt I have to admit is pretty badass
I thought he was in year 7 not year 10
That must of been scary :(
Love ur top 😂😂😂
Am in Year 10🤔
Such bright lights and loud music is so unnecessary. I don't have autism but I do have a chronic illness and I'm totally unable to go in shops because of the lights etc. This could benefit alot of people as well as autistic people. I hope more shops do this, and for more than an hour.
i have been watching for about 2 months i just have 1 quick question is andy scared of planes
I dont like when thay move things about in the shops.
Im autistic but I just make my mother go do the shopping but I can manage its just very hard
Autism hour is really important to me
Hi Kev

There is stuff down ur shirt kev
Hi kev what was your first video
Out of interest is it the exact shop Anna works at now?
No, they moved across town - but a lot of the staff are the same.
Will Andy do his GCSE's?
Their is a video on the channel somewhere in which Kevin answers this question

My son (he is 9) has ear defenders and a chew to help him cope a little better with shopping trips (we still struggle even with these most of the time though) but we get some weird looks and snide comments off staff if he still struggles so much so we rarely shop while he is with us now. His ocd goes mad in shops when things are in the wrong place, tins aren't facing forward, signs are in the wrong place etc. His anxiety also raises due to crowds noise etc etc so overall shops are now my arch enemy!
Thank you
i appreciate this video so much my best friend is autsic and im trying my best to educate myself on things that might make her feel more comfortable when we go out together we go round singing disney songs and reapeating her favourite qoutes we've been friends since we where in nursery i just feel like i could be doing more in terms of making sure she feels more comfortable in certain enviroments xxxxx 😧
+Muddy puddles im nothing special but thankyou
I also have a story too, I hope you read this Kev and maybe help me understand. My boyfriend Liam has autism, and we’ve been together 3 years and understood each other. One day I saw him curled up in a corridor I asked if he was okay and he just stood up and screamed “No go away!” I knew from that point he was having a meltdown, I stood next him knowing it was dangerous and tried to calm him but it wasn’t useful, I got his helper and she was horrible about him having a meltdown she said he’s acting like a baby, I soon found out he was having a meltdown because I’m his English lesson he’d won a packet of sweets but didn’t get any and he likes getting what he’s won or obtained. I now help him through times like them and I have anxiety and depression and maybe an aspie. I may not always be there for him but I’m a person for him to talk to.
I've never heard of this.it sounds brilliant . I wish we had it here in the US.I might be able to get my son or of the house.he might go outside the house 3-4 times a year and then doesn't get it off the car.it breaks my heart.not to mention I would shop on my own at that time because I have anxiety and the lights and music trigger panic attacks every time.good on you UK!
Very interesting story Kevin!
Its great they do this in shops. I think they need to do something similar to autism hour in restaurants and pubs as they can also be very difficult for people with autism. Things like allowing the person with autism to consume their own food- ive had first hand experience of a pub landlord not allow someone I support to eat there own food on the premises even though they bought drinks from the pub. I think they should set up a "quiet/ relaxed area in pubs where its less noisy, more spread out tables and more promt service to reduce anxiety for waiting times
its a good idea, but im not sure a landlord is gona buy into making themselves less money by removing tables to make it less crowded
Hi, I agree cat woman 😀👍
no9scrum your probably right.....still think it would be awesome if they did though
cat woman not in pubs but agree
Hi Kevin and family. When I worked in a large department store. Once a month we had a late opening evening especially for people with special needs and autism. It was quieter, no music, less lighting . Brilliant idea for all stores x
Autism Hour is sooo important to me. I have Autism and really struggle with noise sound light etc and I usually have to leave the shops because it’s so stressful
But now with autism hour. I can shop without the worry of The noise and crowds of people I just feel generally so calm when I am shopping if the shop does autism hour
Thank you for sharing your experience with this wonderful disability! ❤️
#earlysquad kev u are the best
I have so much respect for you all, and my heart goes out to Anna in that situation!!
I love how you explain this in such detail!! It’s awesome how you explain the story to us kinda through Andy’s eyes!❤️❤️❤️
: : and ... yep also just noticed your shirt & now can't stop singing that song in my head! RRd! : :
Autism Hour is great; I really wish it existed earlier, tbh. I know you and Anna felt at that time but it was great the staff were so helpful to you both. Distractions (only good ones) are lifesavers in situations like this one; it's happened to me a few times but I'm glad there's a lot of more support. =D
I can relate to this, every time I go shopping with my son who has autism I have huge anxiety about it, I got him in the routine of choosing a sandwich drink and snack whilst going round the shop and making it a quick shop or we get him dropping to the ground screaming and he doesn't like his clothes either, he will try to strip. I try to get most shopping done whilst he is at school or respite but I have no choice in the holidays. I wouldn't change him for the world though my son is amazing xx

Our stores are all reorganizing in order to add more alcohol to their stock after we’ve passed new liquor laws in my state. Some stores have done really well to use extra signage saying where the items have been moved to. I thought it was very helpful, but never thought of it in the sense of helping alleviate anxiety.
Why I sent it all the way though. The year just one hour a day
,, homebargain 3_5pm n sun 3-4pm in Nottingham Hucknall one want see on Facebook yesterday's October

Andys school refusal story is so similar to mine, i started refusing ( not sure why, i was so anxious it would take over my body ) around october 2015 when i started year
7, and in september 17 i attempted going back to a new school but it was no good and now i am homeschooled as only my parents understand me, i love the awareness you are spreading, keep it up

Oh thank god for thst i thought he'd slipped back
1st like 😀 PS nice vid :)
I hate supermarkets, and the self checkout is amazing because sometimes I just don't have the ability for interacting with the checkout person. Also I never understood why shops changed where stuff was until now
Your shirt just rick rolled me
