  • www.smooth-on.c... for more information about vacuum bagging.
    The aftermarket auto parts industry has grown significantly over the past decade. Increased competition and short lead times have created a demand for faster production methods and techniques. Implementing Smooth-On's vacuum bagging silicone into a resin infusion production method has enabled manufacturers to shorten turn-around time by reducing labor required to tailor the bag and make a part. And because the silicone bag is reusable, the cost of consumables is minimized, if not eliminated.
    Making Re-usable Vacuum Bags Offers Several Advantages;
    * Reusable Bags Reduces Labor Costs Up To 90%
    * Reusable Bags Can Be Used To Quickly Produce Many Parts
    * Cured Silicone Rubber Resists Attack from Chemically Harsh Resins
    * Heat Resistance up to 500°F / 260°C
    * Non-hazardous; No Odor
    * Reusable Bag Eliminates Traditional Bag Film Waste
    "Smooth-On's vacuum bagging silicone has reduced our time to make a part by more than 50%."

    Prepare the Tool
    2 coats of paste wax are applied to the tool. Allow to dry at room temperature. Wax is buffed to a glossy finish. 2 coats of PVA are applied to the tool. Allow to dry at room temperature.
    EpoxAcoat Red: Surface Coat Resin
    EpoxAcoat Red is dispensed and mixed thoroughly. 2 coats of EpoxAcoat Red are applied. Allow EpoxAcoat Red to partically cure for 1 hour. Vacuum host is attached to the underside of the tool and secured. Vacuum system, including resin trap, is ready for the infusion process. Glass matting is laid onto tacky surface coat. Vacuum bag made using Smooth-On's EZ-Spray Silicone 20. Pre-engineed channel secures bag to tool, allowing for 100% positive vacuum. Custom made vacuum bag conforms to the tool surface.
    EpoxAmite 100 Laminating Epoxy
    EpoxAmite is dispensed and mixed thorougly. Vacuum is turned on to start the infusion process. Clamp is removed from resin feed line. Resin flows into bag under vacuum. Resin thoroughly and uniformly saturates glass under vacuum. Bag translucency allows for visual monitoring of the rate of resin infusion. When glass matting is fully saturated, feed line is clamped off. Resin is allowed to fully cure under vacuum at room temperature.
    Demold
    Vacuum bag is removed. Silicone vacuum bag is ready for another cycle. Finished part is removed from tool. Vacuum bag produces a part that is precise, void free and has a perfectly smooth finish.

    Hey Smooth-On people, this video omits a crucial step where you added strips of surface veil bridging the chopped strand mat to the internal and main vacuum channels. Being new to this technique, I was completely confused how the bag would manage to pull any suction whatsoever on the mold cavity & resin feed. I ended up watching both videos three times trying to figure out what I was missing. I didn't figure it out until I watched the wind-blade infusion video that did include the step.
    Could you possibly add a quick little annotation to this video mentioning that step and its importance? I would suggest at 3:45, where the surface veil strips can be clearly seen as having been added.

    @90Dajew In some cases it is not possible to spray due to space constraints, or lack of a machine. Spraying can be faster and produce a more even result in some cases.

    A respirator would be recommended when working with any epoxy resin in that application. The MSDS sheet - available on our website - has more info.

    Indeed, in this situation a smooth finish was first and foremost. Saturation of the fibers is crucial to creating strength and on some cases, an overpressure due to having your resin supply higher than the tool can be problematic. There are some new fiber fabrics we have been looking at that seem to reduce this risk, but you are absolutely right in stating that the height of the resin container can have a great deal to do with the saturation rate of the fibers.

    Very cool process. The silicone does not look like it was affected by the resin contact at all.
    Not having to use release film or tapes or peel ply definately will help reduce costs.
    Well done.

    Dry carbon refers to using prepreg material that already has resin infused in the material. Prepreg is lighter than VRI/RTM (resin transfer mold) but generally requires a autoclave to produce parts unless the prepreg is OoA (out of autoclave) prepreg which still requires a oven.

  • @AboutComposites

    I think this process unnecessary because of glass chopped strand mat, hand lay up enough for this materials.

    • @verdatum
      @verdatum 8 лет назад +9

      Hand layup is not ideal for structurally critical pieces to get the optimal tension and compression strength. The vacuum infusion process allows you to get the ideal ratio of resin to fiber reinforcement, without the labor intensive process of rolling off excess resin. Also, when done properly, vacuum infusion has the benefit of practically eliminating the risk of hidden voids caused by some misbehaving unsaturated portion of chopped strand.

    Im concerned with the fact that the resin bucket is placed higher than the part to be infused. This will create an overpressure and oversaturate the fibers. Is this something to do with a flaw in the bagging system? Or are the builders just looking for a smooth finish and not worrying about fiber content etc...

      That is the B side of the cast part.
      The part was made using a particular reinforcement that is composed of both glass fiber and breather cloth, which gets completely compressed and evenly saturated with the resin delivered via infusion under vacuum. The fibers are visible through the cured resin; not left on the surface.
