Excellent presentation. Art collecting is a strange endeavor, but we Bostonians owe these men a great debt of gratitude and can enjoy the fruits of their efforts every day.

Preface digest. Perry negotiated with very polite attitude to Japan side. Because he knew Japanese ability. Before he landed on Edo, he surveyed Edo bay with a map which was made by Inou,Tadataka who made extreme correct map of Japan. Perry certified Japanese ability and he was amazed. Perry got the map from Von Siebold who was German doctor, and Von Siebold brought the map stealth method from Japan to Germany. After Perry recognized Japanese ability his diplomatic attitude changed. And Japan side knew weak point of Perry fleet. Because if Japan did not supply fuel and water, Perry's steam ships could not return to USA. Japan side knew it.

There was so much more to learn on this topic but that was excluded by dry, slow humor and cleverness. I’m watching to learn, not to be entertained. What a pity. I wish there was a better version of this story of cultural influence.
