I have found two Japanese block prints that appear to me to be quite old judging by the condition of the paper and it is my sincere hope that these prints may fall into the "hidden treasure" category, so now I am faced with the problem of validating my find. Where would one go for an expert opinion?
Anyone here know of how I can get reprints of The 53 Way Stations of the Tokaido? I have Hiroshge's other one The 69 Way Stations of the Kiso Kaido, but for some reason the The 53 Way Stations is so hard to find.
krz0ne1 You're wrong. Dutch would sell goods to Japanese with landscape like drawings printed on the wrappingpaper. Hokusai is known to have collected samples of these just like van Gogh collected ukiyo-e. Depth perception, things like shadows and the use of realistic colors is something not done very much before the Dutch came. Hokusai even wrote down his name van left to right instead of up to down to make it look more like a western painting.
No audio on this computer. So, who did 'The Wave' painting - Hiroshige or Hokusai? I thought Hokusai was not a real name because it rhymes with Yakuza.
