Great overview, nicely done. There's no real excuse for Metal Slug 2 to be missing. Raising the clock gets rid of the slowdown - if it's an issue (definitely is for me-). The Neogeo mini has been out for a while, this one SHOULD be the ultimate version
@@neocvera tbh I never really saw Neogeo as being awesome for shooters, but more for their VARIETY, and HIGH QUALITY of games. Sure, there are more fighters, but that's only because they updated every year 🙂
I'm buying one man! It's awesome! Fighting game happiness kid. I never got into Neo Geo or the MVS but I do understand its huge importance to the overall retro game history.
I only ever used it as it was so didn't see the issues on the TV but the mini screen itself is nice and clear and sharp, no complaints there apart from eye strain from overuse. Good little machine for the price.
Last summer I took my Japanese Neo Geo mini off the shelf again and played games on it in the garden. I have to say that I enjoy it more now than when I first bought it. Not a device you will spend hours gaming on. But with poorly made controllers, a power bank and a few beers, you can get quite some entertainment out of this device. I think the screen itself and the games are of high quality.
Thank you for sharing as I was wondering what the differences are and nearly purchased the international version. I will go for this one. Seems like such a bargain considering how much games cost individually. I never owned a Neo Geo due to the costs back in the day so will be stoked for this version.
I'm sorry, man, the very best Neo Geo Mini is the International version. Not only does it feature the best mix of genres, but it also includes every Metal Slug that ever appeared on SNK's 16-bit hardware back-to-back. Surprisingly, it also includes several games that rarely ever find their way onto compilations like Sengoku 3, Sidekicks, and Football Frenzy. Finally, I think it is the best-looking mini they have ever made. The blue LED ring of light around the stick just sets the entire package off. I realize the International Mini is several years old but you can still buy them today with a controller, mini HDMI, and branded charging cable for 84 bucks. I know this because my launch International Mini met an untimely end a week ago and I just got its replacement in the mail. Addendum- As a Neo Geo AES/MVS/CDZ collector, I really like these mini's. Now, they are not without their flaws but are really great when you want to have some quicks games without dragging hardware out.
@neocvera Now, you're speaking my language! I have been an SNK fan since before anyone knew what a 4-slot MVS cab was. I think my first was Guerilla War or Iron tank on the Nes. All through the 1990s, I was a hardcore SNK fan, and I tried, oh how I tried to get an AES back then. Thankfully, when I hit 15 years old, I found a job at a game store called Microplay. It was like a veritable paradise, and everyone was welcome to try before you buy. We had 4 big screen TVs with 4 AES's connected at all times for play. Employees were strongly pushed to play with guests. We always had the newest games for sale or in-store play. The best perk by far was that we were required to know the products we sold backwards and forwards. We were allowed to "rent" any console we wanted as long as it was returned the next shift day. :) I can't tell you how many times I got to bring home an AES and whatever the hot game was at the time. Despite having access to just about any AES game imaginable, I didn't know Last Resort was even a thing. Until I got it with my very first Neo Geo console in 2008 (Neo Geo CDZ). It was one of the very best shmup's I had ever played then or now. Addendum- I finally got an AES in 2010, and it has been one of the very best consoles I have ever owned.. Fun Fact- my AES comes from the very first batch that ever released here. It came in an almost white box with orange splashes on the side. It says Neo Geo AES across the orange splash and at the top of the box. When you open the box up, it has a warning telling you that it is property of Hilton Hotels Inc. ;)
Very nice breakdown. For me games selection wasn’t an issue because the hack allowed you to add more games although maybe not the whole collection? It’s been awhile and I sold mine long ago so I don’t recall. If they could have just added a clicky stick and went up in screen size to 4” or ideally larger, this would have been a must buy for me. I do like the design the best out of all the minis they’ve made because this is the cabinet I grew up with. If this ever hits the bargain bin I’ll pick it up.
Having few continues on games like Metal Slug is what killed it for me, as it is very hard to finish the games. This device is asking for it to be modded, which is what everyone did. I haven't hacked mine, but now is a good time to do so. I also bought 2 of the 8bitdo controllers, and i'm hoping they will work with this newer NeoGeo.
Hey NCA, Great overview and a finely detailed upload you shared about the Unico MVS Mini. Glad you shared this with us to help us gamers become more informed regarding this unit. Will be keeping this for reference for sure bro. I posted this up on the Neo-Geo thread over on the forums on AtariAge for others to take notice and enjoy. Always a pleasure seeing your material and wishing you and your family a Happy New Year bro. 8^) Anthony...
I was going to buy the Christmas edition one since it has 48 games, but then I saw one (nakoruru version) on auction for like 1/2 the price of normal version, so I snatch that one up and I am happy about it. later I can just mod it to be able to take more games (tbh, I am kinda bummed that nakoruru version only has metal slug1-3, if they have all, I am happy not to mod it)
This seems like such a random release... Zero shmups, finally a NA MVS design, same feature set... Youd think after astro city and egret ii mini they'd steo their game UP, not down...
Nice detailed review of the game library compared to other mini's. A couple additional points - you noted SS2 was missing on international and some other versions, but it is SS1 that is missing from the international (Can't speak to other versions). Also I think you left out a these are mostly Japanese versions of the games compared to the international. This means you get blood by default on the games you expect to see it on (SS, MG, ST)!
I bought the MVSX, replaced the buttons and sticks and installed custom firmware to run every Neo-Geo game as well as a pile of classic Capcom games of that era. Still I might have had interest in this if only they were announcing they have listened to consumer feedback regarding the older models and will be replacing the analog thumb stick with an actual microswitch joystick similar to the Neo-Geo CD controller.
I did this with 2 Xbox 360 fight sticks, 2 may flash adapters, an hdmi to composite adapter and a crt 19 inch tv. I placed it into an arcade cabinet that I got from a yard sale for 10 bucks years back. I think it’s pretty awesome, but then again I’ve never played real hardware so maybe that’s why I’m Impressed idk
I mean yeah it has HDMI but do we know if they're going to fix the HDMI resolution/filter? I think they did it for the arcade stick,so it's reasonable to think that they'd fix it for this.
Not trying to br devil's advocate but the neogeo cd pad's microswitches were pretty bad and broke all the time. I think they were trying to avoid that. Luckily. 8bitdo seems to have fixed that issue with their controller
The egret 2 mini is amazing though. Everyone else looked at the neogeo mini and said "we're just gonna put a whole ass stick in here" the clicks stick comment was geared towards the pad and not the unit itself. The only I own one is because of how cheap they were on Amazon.
Since they FINALLY have the visco bartop up for US buyers, I am thinking about buying it even though it's a little expensive. Any idea if the USB port will lead to any modding?
I want to get it but I think the screen is too small 3.5". It should have at least 4" or larger like the Taito's Egrett or Sega's Astrocity. Another downside: the unit doesn't look anything like SNK arcade and the joystick and buttons don't resemble those of SNK's either. Do you still think it's worth getting overall?
I know I already posted, but you made a very, very small mistake. You said Samurai Shodown 2 wasn't on the International Mini, but it actually is. Mine has Samurai Shodown 2, Samurai Shodown IV, and Samurai Shodown V Special.
Why couldn’t you guys get the button layouts right? Make it match the original, did you have input on making it like that? It makes sense for you? It was never intended to be like that. Your suppose to be hard core neo geo fans. What if Nintendo switched the snes mini with A first and B second because I’m a sega fan and it makes more sense to me. You would have gotten no complaints if you matched the original.
Yeah I get it. If I had input I would have requested: get the stick clicky, get the layout to match the cd pad and add some pixel perfect to the video out. Oh yeah, and don’t gimp on the variety.
9:52 nope.... metal slug is not showing up in the unico visco mini arcade /: which is sad because this one has even a golden coin button which is totally missing in the neogeo mvs mini...together with arcade controls and general identifications for beeing a arcade machine instead of a neogeo switch in arcade themed skin together with bubbly mini buttons and no CLICK CLICK Arcade Sticks!
