Top ten rap albums of the 2010s:10. Jay Z - 4:44This one is brand new, but it’s so damn good that it already deserves a spot on the list. Hov opens up emotionally and shows a vulnerable side we’ve never seen before. He touches on infidelity and self-loathing as well as issues involving race and social class. The GOAT is back.9. Drake - Take CareThis is when Drake officially stole the crown and made being a pussy cool. “Marvins Room” is his magnum opus, in which he does his signature half-singing/half-rapping while drunk dialing his ex. This album solidified Drake’s reputation as mainstream rap’s most sensitive soul.8. J. Cole - 2014 Forest Hills DriveThis was the moment when Cole fully came into his own as one of the best rappers of the 2010s. He scored some of his biggest mainstream radio hits with “Apparently,” “Wet Dreamz” and “No Role Modelz.” He was also the first rapper in decades to go double platinum with no features. Respect.7. Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A ButterflyA timely album that perfectly encapsulates the racial tensions that were/are currently dividing the country. But on top of his soulful social commentary, Kendrick can still rap his ass off like the master MC that he is. An absolute modern masterpiece.6. Kanye West - My Beautiful Dark Twisted FantasyAfter the hilarious 2009 VMA incident, Kanye was public enemy #1. So he went deep underground and cooked up a masterpiece, winning back the adoration of his fans and giving us the best CD of his career.5. Justin Bieber - BelieveIt goes without saying that the Biebs is not only the most talented rapper of his generation, but he’s arguably one of the greatest rappers of all time. His skills are on full display here as he drops the hottest bars in the game. We all need to belieb.4. Taylor Swift - 1989This is the album when T-Swift went from deep, conscious rap to full-blown gangsta rap. Sure, the lyrics are way too angry, violent, and sexually explicit, but she’s a groundbreaking hip-hop artist at the top of her game.3. Adele - 21The ultimate party album, every track here is the ultimate turn-up jam. She spits fire bars about fucking bitches, getting money, and moving pounds of coke on the corner. Adele is the most aggressive, visceral rapper of this or any generation.2. The Beatles - Abbey RoadThe Beatles are a new group. No one has heard of them yet, but hopefully that will change. They’re the best rap group since Wu-Tang. They’re part of the new sub-genre of mumble rap, heavily inspired by Young Thug and Lil Yachty.1. Smash Mouth - Shrek™: Music From The Original Motion PictureWhat else did you expect? The greatest rap album of the decade. The greatest rap album of all time. The greatest album of all time period
Here’s my rankings 1. TPAB (10/10) 2. GKMC (9/10) 3. Untitled (9/10) 3. DAMN (8/10) 4. Section80 (8/10) 5. OD (7/10) Damn and Section80 are tied imo, I constantly switch between which album is better.
Nicholas Reynolds OD is a 7 because I feel it hasn’t aged as well as Section80 or GKMC. I still love a good amount of the tracks, but it’s the album I return to the least in Kendrick’s discography
I personally would like to see a video of you talking purely of your experience on an album, whithout the context you might usually put it in, just your context. I think that would make fro a great fantano video.
Hey Anthony, long time fan here. Your channel was introduced to me way back when you did a collaboration with a channel called "Rock It Out Blog". Your reviews and score are obviously products of your opinion, so it would be silly for anyone to claim that you have an album the "wrong" score. That being said, I believe that the context of an artist's past discography plays a significant role in the reception and reviews of their future projects. Opinions are shaped by subconscious associations, no matter how unbiased a reviewer might attempt to be. For example, Nirvana's "In Utero" is, in my opinion, the band's best studio record. But the existence of "Nevermind" created the context from which my reception of "In Utero" exists. I would personally have given "In Utero" a 9, and "Nevermind" a 8, but if "In Utero" came first, and "Nevermind" was it's followup, I would have given "Nevermind" a 6 or 7. Your reception of "DAMN" may not have been super different if TPAB did not exist, but I honestly think that you may have given it a slightly higher score.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts fantano. I especially see this mind set when it comes to games. Games and music don't exist in vacuums. There is so much to choose from and it's very limiting to treat an album or a game as if it exists in a vacuum. A personal example of mine is Kirby Squeak Squad. I'd give that game a 6/10 and in a vacuum it'd probably around an 8. My problem is that even for the time of its release, there were far better platformer options available to play and now that it's 10 years old, the flaws in its overly simplistic level design stand out even more.
Damn is a 9 for me, it combined a lot of the best elements from GKMC and TPAB and it's just very well made. I fell in love with TPAB instantly, and I did not feel the same way about GKMC or TPAB, but they're both growing on me considerably as I listen to them.
You should respond to Digibro's video about something similar to this, basically a discussion on if you score based on longevity of an album, how memorable or how much you enjoyed it in the moment.
Damn is the only Kendrick album that has made me cry. I was so upset that he would release an album of that quality, and that it was his most well received album by his audiennce
Fantano. The one channel I have subscribed/unsubscribed for about 4 times now. Last one? Subscribed again. You should do more of this sincere ''discussions/thoughts'' on music, genres, overlap in styles and so on. Very good video! Also.. Is it just me? Or is an artist 3th album often just a lot less? It is kind of a thing that i see so often. But yeah. Maybe an 8 was a bit more fair for DAMN. lol. Besides that. I absolutely agree.
This was cool, I would love to hear a seminar on how you take in music. What you look for, your philosophy seems so complex you really break music down like science.
Hey Anthony, there's a rapper I've always wanted to hear your opinion on. Immortal Technique is his name and I can't find any instance of you mentioning his music. He was making music in the early 2000's and I'm just extremely intrigued to hear what you think of his stuff.
I feel like the theme was jus human choices I don’t even think it was supposed to be that crazy of a concept I think he jus made an album with some deep meanings that people can jus jam out to
For me, when I heard Damn., I initially found it quite stunning, likely because I at the time hadn't taken time to sit down (no pun intended) with Lamar's other albums, but after hearing GKMC and TPAB, Damn., is still quite good, with some strong highlights, but after hearing the preceding albums, it caused Damn. to shrink on me.
What about saturation I and 2? Seems to me that you would have given saturation 2 the higher score if it had come out first (simply because it was first/ more original)
Damn has grown on me a lot in a really strange way that other albums haven't before, Damn. Wasn't bad but in my opinion it was pretty disappointing. The way he ended the album was really cool but lyrically and conceptually this is his weakest album, which is why I think tracks like Fear and Duckworth standout so much, otherwise, I don't think Kendrick took enough time on making this album. I still support everything he does musically though and he's still a very great artist
I was taken aback when you gave Damn a 7. However, over time I noticed I didn't listen to damn for a very long time. I moved on to listening to Flower Boy and Vince Staples fairly quickly and Damn never really made a permanent spot of my rotation. I also have noticed that I go back and listen to GKMC and TPAB, I don't do that as much with Damn. It's a great album, but it just didn't have the staying power of the aforementioned previous 2.
He bought up a good point. I use to base my opinions like that where if the previous record was so good it makes it harder for the next therefore I give it a lower. However I grew to learn that everything is great in its own right. So just because DAMN. atheistically is different from To Pimp a Butterfly they are great albums in my opinion.
Yall stupid if yall dont think DAMN. Was an incredible album, I didnt know how to feel at first about songs like Love and Pride but grew on me HEEEAAAVVVYY. I literally like every single song off the album, I believe Kendrick proved his spot and crown in Hip Hop and became the hottest rapper and also managed to break the box of being this like "activist" ppl made him out to be. Will be a classic album for the impact. Best belive.
Its a split album for me. Most songs have just grown on me the more i listen to them. Then theres a few songs that have just gotten a little tired for me, not that theyre bad songs at all, but they didnt have that added level of growing on me the more i listened. Yah, love, and god are all songs i love, but they just havent stuck with me like kendrick songs usually do
I feel like this applies to BROCKHAMPTON's Saturation series, since 2 was more of the same, and I think done better, but lacked that initial punch of an exciting new thing
Good Kid m.A.A.d. city literally is a movie (kind of). A short official film was made for it and the cover has "a short film by Kendrick Lamar" on the front
I’m about as big a Kendrick fan as it gets and I have to agree with Anthony on giving DAMN. a 7/10. Yes it was a good album, however, I recently went back to GKMC and that shit still gives me chills, something that DAMN. only did on the first couple listens. The fact that GKMC is 4 years old and can still affect me in such a way is proof that it is miles better than DAMN.
Kendrick: "When I was 27, I grew accustomed to more fear Accumulated 10 times over throughout the years My newfound life made all of me magnified How many accolades do I need to block denial? The shock value of my success put bolts in me All this money, is God playin' a joke on me? Is it for the moment, and will he see me as Job? Take it from me and leave me worse than I was before? At 27, my biggest fear was losin' it all Scared to spend money, had me sleepin' from hall to hall Scared to go back to Section 8 with my mama stressin' 30 shows a month and I still won't buy me no Lexus". Lil Pump: "Gucci gang Gucci gang Gucci gang Gucci gang Gucci gang Gucci gang Gucci gang Gucci gang Gucci gang Gucci gang Gucci gang Gucci gang" Melon: yep, both of those are a 7.
He did explain why he gave an album that is trying to be deep, the same as an album that’s simple. In lyricism sure, Damn is way better, but other factors to enjoyability or quality.
I feel like that is the whole point of DAMN though. It was meant to be disjointed and incoherent because it is showing a vulnerable side of Kendrick. A side of him that doesn't have all the answers like he did in TPAB. Now, I've been listening to Kendrick since S8 and I personally find DAMN my personal favorite because I feel like he was very creative with this album. A lot of hidden messages in the album that you need to even sometimes listen to it backwards. I liked how it didn't give you a clear cut answer of what the album is about at the end. You had to investigate throughout each track. I do really love TPAB but I don't feel like it's as creative as DAMN. GKMC- Questions and Confusion from Kendrick TPAB- Answers and Certainty from Kendrick DAMN- Vulnerability and Realism from Kendrick
I kind of question whether the disconnect comes for DAMN. based on his fame. Kendrick's stated in interviews that after touring for GKMC that the reception for that album really sort of pushed the concept to him of writing in terms of how an audience will perceive his work as opposed to simply just pouring himself out in his lyricism. TPAB followed GKMC, which obviously propelled his career forward tremendously which lofts the guy in many weird places I'm sure he's still processing to this day. If there's one thing that I think goes without saying in regard to Kendrick's output it's that every release he puts out is undeniably relevant to what he's experiencing at that point in his life, so all things considered, it's hard for me to see DAMN. as anything other than what's to be expected after such a response to his output. I kind of view the album as one of his most solely introspective outputs as every track essentially stems straight from a response to the emotions and themes that I imagine are most relevant to his life at the moment. The songs also tend to subtly hint at this back and forth relationship to one another, "Lust" and "Love", "Pride" and "Humble", "Fear" and "God", which I think either intentionally or unintentionally compliments the sort of confusion he's facing in his life. I think the effort and thought placed into the arrangement and creation of this album is deserving of a ten, however, sonically paired with the instrumentals, the end result simply doesn't have the staying power that a TPAB or GKMC does. That being said, I do think that in years to come, DAMN. will go down as one of the most significant and pivotal stepping stones in Kendrick's career, but I get a strongly experimental and self-indulgent/reflective vibe from the album that I think doesn't resonate all that well when coupled with the very pop-tinged tone of the album. I feel like "Feel" is the perfect track that summarizes the tone of DAMN. and sort of encompasses the space between all the other tracks on the record as an adhesive. I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I almost think it's essential to the next step of Kendrick's career. To me, it's understandably a seven on the whole, but I feel perhaps the future will give this thing more of a push towards significance and relevance.
Daga Qtawaru That's basically the exact problem he was addressing in this video lol... An artist's previous work shouldn't factor too much into the rating of a different album
@@birthdaygnat8314 if u don't think damn is a classic than u don't think albums like the black album or the blueprint are classics . I put damn in that category while tpab is in the category of reasonable doubt and illmatic
I have a similar question about the Saturation albums. Would their ratings be reversed if the Saturation II was released as Saturation I and vice versa? Not complaining by the way, ratings on an artist obviously depend on the context of what they've done.
I value your opinion, obviously, thats why Im watching this video in the first place. But I dont think that you're being entirely truthful here. I think what you are talking about in the video is something you strive to do, but dont always accomplish. It seems to me from the Saturation 2 review that you absolutely rated that album with the first one in mind, which, to be fair, would be pretty hard not to since they came out like 3 months apart from each other.
I feel like Kendrick didn't put too much effort into DAMN. That's just the impression I have. he has written much better raps dating back 6 years (or even more). If anything I think the producers and TDE's mixer "MixedbyAli" put more time and effort into that album
I don't think it's a case of "I gave it a 10, so this must be a 7". I think a lot of reviewers review albums partially based on the artist's previous album. Sometimes the score of Pitchfork reviews are kinda shifted by one album in an artist's discography.
If you listened to DAMN backwards would it get a 10/7?

Yah, love, and god are all songs i love, but they just havent stuck with me like kendrick songs usually do
Tee-PAB?
The fact that Melon is so literate is such a huge turn on. #NowCriticMyAssDaddy
I feel like this applies to BROCKHAMPTON's Saturation series, since 2 was more of the same, and I think done better, but lacked that initial punch of an exciting new thing
I’m feeling a strong 9 to a 10 in David’s English on this letter
Do you like where you stand as a critic?
Here’s a question for next time. When will everyone get over the DAMN review?
Never. They still haven't gotten over the MBDTF review from 7 years ago.
Zachary Jones that review was pure blasphemy
Melekh You would say that lol.
@@ArmLegLegArmHead47 this damn review was trash as well why do y'all care so much about a weirdo who isn't a professional critic opinion?
Good Kid m.A.A.d. city literally is a movie (kind of). A short official film was made for it and the cover has "a short film by Kendrick Lamar" on the front
What is this? A crossover episode?
I’m about as big a Kendrick fan as it gets and I have to agree with Anthony on giving DAMN. a 7/10. Yes it was a good album, however, I recently went back to GKMC and that shit still gives me chills, something that DAMN. only did on the first couple listens. The fact that GKMC is 4 years old and can still affect me in such a way is proof that it is miles better than DAMN.
Kendrick: "When I was 27, I grew accustomed to more fear
Accumulated 10 times over throughout the years
My newfound life made all of me magnified
How many accolades do I need to block denial?
The shock value of my success put bolts in me
All this money, is God playin' a joke on me?
Is it for the moment, and will he see me as Job?
Take it from me and leave me worse than I was before?
At 27, my biggest fear was losin' it all
Scared to spend money, had me sleepin' from hall to hall
Scared to go back to Section 8 with my mama stressin'
30 shows a month and I still won't buy me no Lexus".
Lil Pump: "Gucci gang Gucci gang Gucci gang Gucci gang Gucci gang Gucci gang Gucci gang Gucci gang Gucci gang Gucci gang Gucci gang Gucci gang"
Melon: yep, both of those are a 7.
Song Review =/= Album Review.
I'm just messing with Lilthony Pumptano
He did explain why he gave an album that is trying to be deep, the same as an album that’s simple. In lyricism sure, Damn is way better, but other factors to enjoyability or quality.
thank you for this. Ive actually been very curious
GKMC- Questions and Confusion from Kendrick
TPAB- Answers and Certainty from Kendrick
DAMN- Vulnerability and Realism from Kendrick
Have you ever heard of KENDRICK SWANHAMPTON DEATH RESERVE? Pretty underrated.
I get the cross genre thing. For some reason Drake's Take Care reminds me of Alexisonfire's Watch Out.
1:20 MELON IS SUCH A NICE BOY WOW
First of all DAMN. shouldn’t of been a 7 in the first place. It should’ve been a 5-6.
As I look deep within the reflection of light in Melon's glasses, I see something.. a Clash Of Clans base.
It's an album I think is best listened to driving alone in your car at night. During isolated moments of self-reflection.
Why are people still so butt hurt over Anthony giving DAMN a 7? -_-
Daga Qtawaru That's basically the exact problem he was addressing in this video lol... An artist's previous work shouldn't factor too much into the rating of a different album
I don’t really care, fuck damn , good kid maad city is better
Daga Qtawaru They’re just memeing. Most people think DAMN deserves the 7.
@@gabrieljunod6617 no they don't
@@birthdaygnat8314 if u don't think damn is a classic than u don't think albums like the black album or the blueprint are classics . I put damn in that category while tpab is in the category of reasonable doubt and illmatic
if MBDTF wasn't a 6/10 LOP have got a 10/10?
I have a similar question about the Saturation albums. Would their ratings be reversed if the Saturation II was released as Saturation I and vice versa? Not complaining by the way, ratings on an artist obviously depend on the context of what they've done.
Anthony's racking up that Peet's Coffee money
Lil pump's new album 10/10 confirmed
Good Kid Kendrick Pimps a Butterfly ... Damn !
I can't decide if good kid or to pimp a buttery is better both classics however damn isnt a classic but it's still pretty damn good
that damn background killed me' SWITCHING IN THE SPEED OF LIGHT
Would damn still be a 7 if 7 wasn’t a 7
Was a well-articulated question although he used infamous incorrectly which could be a subconscious influence from many of TND's videos
Damn damn damn you gave damn a 7..now flip that upside down that's ya brand new name
A 7 isn't even a bad score. It is good/above average score. It's not like DAMN. is this groundbreaking work for hiphop or for Kendrick.
I feel like Kendrick didn't put too much effort into DAMN. That's just the impression I have. he has written much better raps dating back 6 years (or even more). If anything I think the producers and TDE's mixer "MixedbyAli" put more time and effort into that album
Anthony did you ever watch Flying Lotus' movie Kuso? I'm curious to know if you formed an opinion about it.
10:42 DAMN. Did this MELON just BITE a CARROT?! Isn't that like cannablism?
Oi Fantano, Brand News "Daisy" doesn't sound so daisy anymore, ey?
Actually a question i really asked myself when i saw the DAMN. review
DAMN is a great album man idc
I am amazed that a positive review still has this much controversy and meme potential
Hitting my inbox with that SINCERE ORANGE BEANIE thanks melon man
I don't think it's a case of "I gave it a 10, so this must be a 7". I think a lot of reviewers review albums partially based on the artist's previous album. Sometimes the score of Pitchfork reviews are kinda shifted by one album in an artist's discography.
