The only way I’d be okay with Casas being moved is if we got a guy like Jared Jones from the Pirates back. If you get a pitcher with high upside and control in exchange, that’s fine. Shoot, I could even get behind it depending on who they actually plug in at 1B, but that just isn’t what a lot of these deals are looking like. It seems like he’s a piece being added to try and get Yoshida gone, which is a total mistake in my mind.
This was before we signed Walker Buehler, so if we did trade Casas + Yoshida for Castillo it would’ve filled our #3 starter role, and it would’ve cleared Yoshida off the books and gotten 2 LH out of the lineup which helps Mayer and Anthony have room. That’s the logic, and big parts of that are sound, but losing Casas in the process when his value is this low AND we don’t even have another 1B on the roster is just baffling to me.
I thought the latest section 10 was interesting. They talked like they know several people in the organization have a problem with Casas and want him gone.
That would impact it I’d imagine. It’s funny I recorded all of this yesterday, and right after I finished editing it all to post it today I started seeing all the tweets talking about Casas from the Section 10 pod. I haven’t listened to it myself, but I still think if you give him up it still needs to be a good trade - which none of the scenarios I’ve seen have been yet.
I found myself really agreeing with Carrabis. He said that there's 3 opinions on Casas 1. There's people like Millican who slobber all over him and it's just gross. 2. There's people who appreciate his talent, see his potential, and would rather have him on the team. 3. The people who say he's weird, paints his nails and want him gone for stupid reasons. I find myself in the middle at #2 and like Carrabis, i find 1-3 gross.
Lots of great points as usual. I do agree that a Red Sox - Casas extension is hugely unlikely at this point, between the fact that he knows how good he is, and that the Red Sox haven't treated him super well, and that there are now arguably some better extension candidates on the table such as Crochet, Anthony, Campbell. I do think they are trying to avoid the pain of letting him walk in FA in 4 years or trying to trade him in 3 years as a rental. So while I don't like trading Triston I see the reasoning. But the thing that really really kills me about it is the timing. First off, is value right now is at its low point after that injury season. When he comes out this year and has a full healthy season and hits 30 ding dongs his value is going to shoot up. and second of all as you point out, we don't have another first basemen, and Pete Alonso isn't even necessarily a real upgrade, he just is righty instead of lefty, but that's not really worth $25m in extra cost??? If next offseason, with his value higher, they tried to trade him because they were sure they could get Vladdy, a clear upgrade, in FA, then I could get behind that I guess? But right now, just makes minimal sense to me.
Yeah I’d much rather extend Anthony, Campbell, Crochet, if I had to choose, but a Casas extension would’ve been great. I just think they’ve burned that bridge for now, hopefully they can rebuild it if they don’t end up trading him 🤞
I’m tired too. It’s a huge mistake. I don’t believe he’s being shopped. I think it’s more the writers putting BS out. I know one thing if they trade him I will be done with this team No Hesitation!
I don’t feel like he’s necessarily “being shopped” in the way that Breslow is calling around asking him to be moved. BUT I do feel that in every single bigger trade idea that is coming up, he’s a “big piece” that’s available and being brought up by the Red Sox.
You know I'm tired of hearing the Red Sox are going to get this guy or that guy while they sit on there butt's getting hemmeroids for doing Nothing while the Yankees are signing everyone they want.
They’ve made some reasonable moves so far, getting Crochet is awesome, but I totally get the sentiment and agree - they still haven’t done enough and need to prove it on the field and in the FO.
I don't think Cases should be traded they don't really have anyone to replace him Devers is not a first baseman. Unfortunately Cases is considered a weird dude but I'm not sure why that matters. They need handed power and another reliever otherwise they've had a decent off season. I really hope they keep Cases. Vlad Jr is the player I'd trade for Cases and I don't see that happening!
Assuming Devers is going to be any better at 1B than he is at 3B is kind of silly to me when he’s a horrible third basemen. I think it would be much better to let Casas ride this season and then just see if he can give you that 30+ HR year this year, because then he becomes extremely valuable and could get a haul in return if you do actually have a reason to move him. I also just don’t see Vlad getting traded before the Trade Deadline - he’s the face of the franchise for the Jays and they have money to spend.
Exactly. Manny being Manny, Spaceman Bill Lee, Steve “Psycho” Lyons. Casas would be another in a tradition of marching to your own drum players. I think he did not help himself with commentary about his injury that contradicted Cora, but that is a discussion with him about how that is disruptive to the team… especially with the intensity of Boston Sports Media. He is great with fans, fun with media, and I’ve heard several players, particularly in the minors, who speak glowingly of him. This is the kind of guy that generates positive vibes for the Sox and probably will drive merch sales.
I think they plan on making a big run at Vladdy in free agency next off season, but realistically if Cohen wants him like he wanted Soto, is John Henry willing to go as far as it takes in a bidding war against him? 8 don't think he will. Then there's the Yankees and Dodgers to also bid against and you know they'll be up there too. Why not wait till after you actually get Vladdy to deal Casas?
All of this trade talk is one year premature. If they trade Casas it should only be after they have signed Vlad jr. I like Casas for all the same reasons you do, and I would like him to succeed with Red Sox and he would most likely be alot cheaper.
that mariners trade is shit ngl lol. a 32 year old pitcher for a young up and coming hitter is blasphemy lol. unless they have a plan at first base idk why they’re shopping him. however he does need to prove himself bc he shows too much inconsistency for hitting and defense and we act like hes david ortiz or something😂. he better prove to us that he belongs
The last time he was fully healthy he was an elite hitter for over half the season, so I think it’s reasonable to assume he can get close to that again. He does have more to prove but I think he’s also proven a lot already.
There’s a way to trade him and for it to be OK, but they A. Have to get high upside talent back, and B. Have to get a viable replacement for him at 1B. None of the explored deals that I’ve seen so far meet either of those conditions.
The guy is a nitwit and should have been traded long ago. Painted fingernails, stupid excersise moves in a ski mask, clutch less when you really need a hit. He’s a waste product and brings the team down with his idiocy.
Casas is my boy. They better not get rid of him.
This guy is my favorite player, it would hurt if he left, I’m his #1 fan
Let’s all hope it doesn’t come to that ❤️
Had the same thought before you said it of the comps to the betts deal. But at least we got prospects out of that one...

That mariners trade is so absurd i doubt it's real. Why trade one salary dump for another

From what I understand, Casas is the one that has not agreed to an extension.
I genuinely don’t believe that they made a competitive offer is the problem.
Lets trade Casas for Verdugo 😅

I sure hope so

Yeah I’m totally good with that scenario. Vlad would crush in Boston!

@ fair but hes also gotta be consistent and disciplined. even when he was fully healthy he had too much swing and miss
If they trade Casas im done. I will not follow the team anymore.

@@cutlets2118 dumbest comment of all time

Worst type of fan ^
Games played are the most important stat. He's soft and can't stay on the field. Move him now.
Who’s playing 1B then? There isn’t even a viable option within the organization as a backup right now.
Welcome to being a poverty franchise.
Sigh.
