RoboCop - Caravan of Garbage

- The original RoboCop from 1987 is incredible. Directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Peter Weller as the titular RoboCop/Alex Murphy it remains one of the best sci-fi films of all time. With its retro futuristic, satirical and hyper-violent aesthetic it truly is a one of a kind experience that will never be replicated. Despite RoboCop 2, RoboCop 3, the 2014 reboot, the two tv series, multiple games and upcoming legacy sequel. Thanks for watching!

#RoboCop
“He didn’t leave a pole below” is the quickest response Mason’s ever done.
So good 😭 didn’t get the reaction it deserved
I was shocked out how lightning quick and on point that was. underappreciated 😂
He deserves a raise for that joke alone.
time Code?
Time code?
The satire of Robocop is pretty funny and on point. But the heart of the movie is the story of a man whose humanity was stolen from him and how he slowly gains it back. Also he shoots that one guy in the dick and that’s great.
Amen!
yep, i'd buy that for a dollar!
It works on multiple levels: As satire, as dark comedy, as straight-up action, as social commentary...it's just a fantastic movie all around.
@@ShinGallon it is a superhero movie, you can callit also a popcorn movie, but the first time I watched this as a kid, this was a thriller, had horror, I wasn't sure Robo was going to survive.. of course he does, he does have plot armor besides real armor..
As an adult I love the satire, specially as a latin american, we saw the satire three decades before the americans did, and also as a comedy.. for me it's the best movie ever created.
I like how they make the bad crew remarkably charismatic and even friendly to one another as they work to screw over other sellers. And it doesn't change the fact that there is a strong satisfaction to see them get viciously killed. Also that one line still gets me. "Hey, those'll kill ya." "Yeah well, you wanna live forever?"
That bit about RoboCop aging poorly because the corporate villain was defeated by proof of his evil schemes..... That is too true and hit me in the feels.
I don't know....the corporation is still chugging along with their scheme to destroy Detroit by proxy and build their new Delta City in RoboCop 2 and 3.
Greed is greed. Evil is evil. That has not changed since humanity started writing things down and likely won't as long as humanity exists.
I DO wonder how long until some elected official does not like the result of an election and resorts to violence to get his toys back.... Oh. Wait. My bad. It has happened. Pity Robo wasn't around in 2021.
The concept of Robocop in the end being arrested for unauthorised access to the system he got the evidence on was such a good bit 😂 Al capone’d him
One of my favourite movies of all time. Hyper violent bad guys, sharp writing, a timeless aesthetic and quality acting.
Lol what
Sharp writing???

Didn't we buy it for 9 a month? Or 7. I forget how much I pay for big sandwich.

Fun Fact: Peter Wellar could fit head phones under the helmet, so during the famous drug den shoot out scene, Peter Wellar was listening to Peter Gabriel’s Red Rain
It wasn’t Red Rain. Wellar was a huge Muddy Waters fan and was listening to his classic Hoochie Coochie Man, which Paul Verhoeven found so funny that it actually let to the working title of the film being “Blues Harvest”
It’s Weller
@@WHITEYBHOY2it's delissio
@@adamseidel9780 the premise of this joke is also muddying the waters. Titanium blue was used on the costume and Peter Weller -staying in character- ate cases of butter nut squash baby food while filming. This led to the working title: Blue Harvest.
@@adamseidel9780i was gonna use the same punchline fuck😭
This movie still holds up so well. Practical effects never really die.
Same
"Practical effects never really die" That's one of the sad things about today's movies, depending on the specific movie like 25-80% is going to be purely CGI.
Also can i just say that shot framing used to be way better (like pre-2010ish at least)? Nowadays it's either wide shots with tons of CGI or extreme close-ups with soo many cuts that someone with ADD will feel nauseous.
"practical never dies" someone's never seen the prototype Twilight baby I guess

I'm convinced the arresting officers were captivated as well
They also robbed a whole theater of seeing Robocop, so they're Robbercops
I don’t believe that story is real
@@goldenfiberwheat238 cops are very good at standing and sitting around. Back then, they would've been less likely to draw weapons and go for it in a public place. The part I don't believe is that they learned anything from the movie.
Kurtwood Smith's line delivery in this movie is flawless. Almost every sentence he says is indelibly seared into my brain just due to how he said them.
"Can you fly, Bobby?" being the one that stands out the most.
NGL bitches leave never fails to put a smile on my face. LOL

"Just give me my f***ing phone call"
I won a copy of this movie in a competition back in 1988. The question was what were Robocop’s prime directives. I’d just read the book and my parents had no idea how violent it was. I was 10. I then did a book review on the novel for school and leant the VHS to my teacher because he liked the sound of it.
Robocop feels oddly timeless despite being a time capsule of 80s action movies. Like, despite the fashion and dialogue being very of it's time, there's almost a feeling of "this is like it's own world" and you want more of it. On top of that, I think the sci-fi aspects of it hold up well. Not too far fetched, but grounded enough to feel like this could happen in our lifeitme. Also, playing the Rogue City game recently, it really did drive home how much of it holds up. It's by no means a perfect game, but it's a great robocop experience, and it gave more of that world that I enjoyed so much. More over, I felt like the police uniforms, hair styles, and dialogue held up quite well.
“I’ll leave a poll below.”
“He doesn’t leave a pole below…”
Absolutely brilliant, Mason.
@ 6:53 That's my boy Darryl Cox. He teaches Acting In Front of the Camera here at the University of Oklahoma. It was the funnest class I ever took, but it also taught me that I definitely belong behind the camera.
😊1987 best movie ever made
My like goes to Ben and Laurence, because it makes my brain hurt trying to figure out how they do it. I guess the comment is for the whole channel.
I'm a fan for sure. The mileage they get out of a handful of photos of the guys is hilarious.
Incase you didn't know @ben from Canada and @rawcollings exist but they don't post a ton. Good stuff when they do!
My favourite moment is when Robert O. Cop went to WCW to help Sting fight the 4 horseman.
I’m so happy someone mentioned this 😂
69th like. Nice
Also I like when the little girl reprograms ED209. That's the best one. Other than the remake
HERE COMES ROBOCOP BOB!
Remember when Robo went to shoot Flair in the dick but he deflected by doing the helicopter?
bobocop was quite the guy
"He doesnt leave a pole below" was lightning-fast and, Maso, I APPLAUDED
Mason hasn’t talked about James brother he doesn’t like for a while. I thought they might have mended fences and he became a brother of James Maso likes. Apparently not sad day.
As much as I miss green trivia ATAB is pretty damn good
Major missed opportunity to have a photo of Bob Iger as Maseau’s dad in the video store clip
What I really love about this movie is that it has so much rewatch-ability and there’s just so many little details and references hidden in the background.
For instance, in the scene that takes place in the mom-and-pop store, you can see not only an Ironman comic from 1966 in the background but also the comic book "ROM The Space Knight” which also involves a brutally slain character whose organs are harvested and placed into a robot in order to save his people.
Also, during the scene where Murphy's son Jimmy watches the movie Blue Thunder on TV in a flashback, issue 41 of ROM can be seen on the floor at his feet.
Fun fact: these seemingly innocuous references eventually led several members of the production team to jokingly refer to the movie as Blue Harvest which was also coincidentally the working title for the 1977 film Star Wars.
To quote Griffin Newman: "Okay, so how does this movie start? The way all good movies start, with giant letters that say RoboCop."
Robocop is the only r-rated movie my mother let me watch as a kid it wasnt untill i became an adult that mom revealed that Peter Weller was one of her celebrity crushes
Robocop is a masterpiece. One of the best films ever made. I too saw it when I was around 10 years old and I shared it with all my friends. One of my friends spent the next few years walking around the playground at school like Robocop 😂
I'm flabergasted by the fact that classic character Rope-Pope-Cop didnt make an appearence in this
I’m really disappointed there was no Foo Fighters reference after “I’ve got another confession to make.” So here it is - that’s the start of a foo fighters song.
I watched this in the theaters. My dad took me as a 7 year old. I had nightmares for a week. One of my favorite movies!
Here's some green trivia, when they did the melting mutant scene and the guy reacted to his melting buddy grab onto him, that was a *genuine* reaction from the actor as he'd not been informed or shown what he would look like
The first Robocop is such a great movie. Kurtwood Smith gives a amazing performance as Clarence Bodiger
"He doesn't leave a pole below". Perfect wit.
the melting scene traumatized me so bad as a kid, still one of my favourite movies though
The special effects were TOO good. It was so visceral. His goopy, melting fingers are the best!! 😂
Thanks for the shout out guys at 9:16! Much appreciated and great video. You guys are awesome. Robocop is an unapologetic masterpiece, one of my all time favorites.
The first one is almost 40 years old, but still holds up incredibly well. Still feels futuristic
Missed editing opportunity when James said “I got another confession to make”
So I watched Robocop for the first time lat year (at the age of 20) and gotta say I loved it SO much, like I was expecting a cheesey goofy 80s scifi movie, which in a way it is, but it was also so well made, so well thought out, everything felt like it mattered and the movie had SOOOOOO much heart!
It’s a great example of how, for a movie like this, you can either not take everything too seriously and let it be somewhat light and have a wink and a nod for the audience or you can take the premise TOTALLY seriously and really out maximum effort into every little choice and commit 100%. They committed 100% and it’s just so many great little details.
glad you guys are finally doing these movies so it gives me a reason to finally watch them
Did you know in early production for Robocop, Paul Verhoeven wanted the titular character to be in more distinct colours to identify him as a member of law enforcement?
However, this led to some tension from local officers who felt this would lead to potential aggression towards the police, so they drained the blue from Robocop's armour, which gave the film the working title of 'Blue Harvest' - which was also the working title for Star Wars.
He’s so proud of himself, folks.
god damn you
I love these jokes so much
To OP.
Are these meant to be funny? A litmus test for idiots?
It’s actually scary that last night I was searching for a caravan of garbage robocop. Thought for sure they would’ve done it….and here we are.
I never thought I'd say this, but Detroit, as it is portrayed in RoboCop is now considered an optimistic portrayal of the city in the future. The reality is much more sad and dystopic.
I don’t believe you’ve been to Detroit in the past 15 years.
11:28 when the only things that age poorly are the small special effects like this, you know it's a really good movie overall.
Our Robocop Remake deserves all the recognition it can get. People ruining the movie before the remake could do it for them :D
they made FOUR of these? well bugger me
Apparently Peter Weller has a PhD in Italian Renaissance Art so he's technically Dr. Weller
A fun bit of trivia that you missed is that originally they wanted to add police lights to the robcop suit but due to the scarcity of blue leds production staff had to spend weekends going to source them from local computer shops hence why the working title was blue harvest
Robocop is definitely a top 5 movie for me. No other movie in history has blended action, sci-fi, and social satire on the same level as this classic. Hell, even the sequels and remake couldn't come anywhere close to the original.
I'd argue that Robocop 2 is just as good as the 1st. It doesn't have as memorable a main villain as the 1st, but the mayor's performance makes up for it.
The interesting thing about the Robocop suit is that, because of the way it was designed, it actually took longer to remove than it did to put on. During screen tests, Weller jokingly referred to this laborious process as "harvest time" and it led to the the film receiving the working title of "Blue Harvest."
I recently got this movie on bluray, and I absolutely love that they included the edited TV version as a bonus feature 😂. I wish more classic movies did that.
The edited for TV version is complete and utter garbage, though, it is a waste or space for it to be on there, as well as a waste of time skipping menu selection cursor over it. Why do you "absolutely love" such an addition? It's not more like a "hey, that's kinda neat, I guess?"
Being from Sacramento, I love the movie theater fact. That would have been at the old K Street Mall theater. I think Sacramento is the Australia of cities in California in that we are like the fourth most well known and always get excited when brought up in conversation.
I can’t believe James was part of the first cloning program along with his brothers
When it comes to Robocop I have a simple rule to the uninvited: "See the Paul Verhoeven directed original. That one is great. Everything else having the Robocop name, including the remake, is best ignored."
It's a weird feeling ... I was 18 when I saw this in the theatre in 1987 (so, technically already an adult, I suppose), and I remember thinking, "Wow, that ED-209 effect was great!" And I guess that compared to what came before ... it *was*. I think the key was that it was *new*, and it's only now that I've seen much more "realistic" killer battle-mechs in countless games and movies that I see how comparatively janky it was. Novelty really did account for a lot of what we appreciated in older sci-fi live-action, and maybe some recent movies can seem pedestrian despite having excellent VFX because so little of it feels "new" any more. In short, we've been kind of spoiled lately.
I maintain, the last 20 minutes of this movie is the apex of our creative achievements as a species.
Rewatching this today makes the satire so much more connected. And it’s a dark reflection of things that could be (and may be heading that way)
4:37 seriously, Alex Baldwin is the first example that comes to mind.
That Spider-Man take is still mind blowing to this day to me
I can't believe Mason watched this when he was 9. This would wreck me at that age.
They didn't mention the theme music but all there is to say is that it's AWESOME
Quite funny how people complain about the cost of a 4K disc nowadays when VHS prices back in the day were obscene.
Mason for PM
I’d like to see a caravan of garbage for the 1997 critically acclaimed series, Night Man
I didn't even know there were 4 RoboCop movies😅
I thought there was more 😂
0:25 I thought James was telling us to leave, I was going to say no thank you, this is one of the first movies I ever watched
You got to love the first 2 robocop films.
I remember way back in the day this movie was referred to as " poor mans Terminator "😂
I've seen this movie, I love this movie, but the level of gore and violence still surprises me when I see it again. It's intense and insane and I can't get enough. 😂
Yeah, the profits from this movie kept the squib industry in business for a decade. 😂
Murph getting blown apart was legit terrifying to kids, and then we got a cartoon!
I love pointing out that the movie is a hard R but literally all of the marketing was for children
I really hope "A dog could do that" becomes the new "James tries a stunt from the film"
My father took me and a buddy of mine to the theatre for my 10th birthday for this flick. We loved every minute of it!!!
My parents took my and a friend too. I was 8 lol.
@@Flint-Dibble-the-Don nothing like the 80s!!! Good times lol
How have you guys, being Aussies, not done the Mad Max franchise yet?!?! WE NEED MAD MAX!!!!!!!!!
Two dollars.
When they said only Robocop had franchise material, James and Maso clearly forgot about the classic sequel "Three Men and a Little Lady"
James is so old that he would buy stuff for a dollar and still be rich
When it comes to greatest sci-fi action movies, it's Predator, Terminator 2, and Robocop.
This is my favorite movie of all time. The fact you guys did this makes me feel like its my birthday! Holy cow! RODNAY?!
My history teacher used to brag about getting Peter Weller to go to our school and talk to the students back when he used to do stuff for the history channel. Every time we watched a history channel video he would say "not to brag but I got him to come to our school" and if Peter Weller wasn't in the video my teacher would always make sure we knew he wasn't lmao.
Jones falling out the window isn't an effect that "aged badly." It always looked bad, even in 1987. As a kid I saw that and said, "Yeesh," (or words to that effect). But it should never be changed, and nor should anything else in this masterpiece.
I miss the era when ultra-violent R-Rated action movies would inexplicably become children's franchises with cartoons and what not.
Could you fucking imagine if John Wick or Hardcore Henry got turned into a brightly colored cartoon with them having a quirky team of teenagers who hang out with a psychopathic mass-murderer for some reason?
I'm actually shocked you guys hadn't done this one sooner!
I love this series about some of my favorite series! You’re doing great lads!
16:46 Video tapes were so expensive back then because they were primarily sold to rental stores. Even into the late 90s, some new tapes were being sold at that rental store price point, but it was much rarer.
“Your fired” The most badass kill
*You're
I might be wrong, but I think another reason for films like this getting popular with kids was because, in the US at least, they were broadcast on TV channels, usually edited down to about a PG, sometimes PG-13 level. Another neat thing about this is that those versions were also an early vector for viewing deleted or alternate scenes. To this day I believe there are a select few scenes that have only survived thanks to people recording TV edits of films onto VHS tapes and then eventually uploading them to the internet. There are probably still a few waiting to be rediscovered, so if you are reading this and you have old VHS recordings of TV broadcasts of films, you may have something rare and unique on your hands!
I’m so glad they brought up the trading cards 😂
I see RoboCop as the true sequel to Terminator 2. It's the future of what happens after Cyberdyne gets bought up by OCP.
You guys should cover the original 3 Men in Black movies.
The stop motion is brilliant and so is the very subtle satire
😊agreed
I just watched this movie the other day. My mother had never seen it, but was intrigued when I explained that it is full of social satire that is even more relevant today. Needless to say we both enjoyed the film and she now understands my love of Kurtwood Smith.
More relevant today? Because of all the crime and drug use going on? I sure don't see any cyborg police officers or private corporations buying out police departments. 🤔
"Your move, Creep!"
I was once called Robocop after very quickly firing a 12-guage pump-action 4 times blowing a big hole through the target. I was honored to be called that. Good thing I held the shotgun properly; my arm would have fallen off otherwise.
I feel you missed a trick by not covering the infamous and strangely amazing TV dubs of this film where all the sex drugs and graphic violence was left in but all bad language was redubbed badly.
Dick Jones saying "once I even called him... AIR HEAD" really should be in the official cut of the film.
Should've watched TMNT 2007
Robocop is one of my favourite films of all time, but to this day I've made it a strange point of pride to say I've never seen Robocop 3.
the bums are cool. All-Americans
I love the fact that Mason hates one of James’s brothers and at first you think it’s a joke, but you slowly realize over years of listening that it’s 100% true
I watched this movie with my dad who was an NYC police officer. The part at the beginning when Murphy is twirling his gun my dad said, "That's a good way to get fired".
This comment for purely for engagement purposes.
Amazing how that Starship Troopers bit suddenly became relevant recently.
3:45 rare Jim Haggerty moment
Dude I remember talking my mom into taking me to see the first Robocop movie and how much she was shocked that she liked it but never once said that it was too violent for her 9 year old child. Oh to have been a child in the 80’s back when children were allowed to go to a store for their grandma and pickup cigarettes and where I was allowed inside of a strip club to look for my uncle🤣🤣🤣.
