I have an 08. I just got a a few days ago. The dude said ALL I NEED TO DO WAS CLEAN THE CARB. like really take it apart and clean it. WRONG. I had to set up the timing because the marks def were not even close to what they were supposed to be. Broskeez- if someone were to just slapp it all together without regard to marking alignment- what are the chances that something like a valve or piston is going to get hit? I also reused the mls head gasket. I acetone and scotch brite padded and cleaned the previous sealer off. I then res[prayed with permatex 80064! IT WORKS NOW. I know I KNOW- IM getto. But this, my guys, is what you call ghetto fabulous , of course with the help of my really gopod friend. JesusChrist. He helps me with so many of my mistakes and bad decisions. All the time he bails me out. THANKS AGAIN..
also- do not spray too much 80064! no need tolay it on, just enough to lightly cover entire layer. then stack them all together again and squeeze the squuezy corners that snapp and grab each layer to the other layer,. First do a practice attempt and act like you were really putting the head back on....Do it a couple of times. Hopefully what I am going to share with you will help you prepare. 1. head gasket orientation- how does it go on? like this? or like that? YOU DO NOT WANT TO RE LIFT THE MLS AND TRY TO FIX ISSUES YOU WERENT PREPARED FOR. 2. 08 HEAD requires one of the head bolts to be on the head when you put the head back on! I swear, I thought I was in the clear. I started to install the head bolts and one of them will not let you install! because the frame is in the way! 3. the stationary valve guide moved off of its little arm holders during the scuffle of me trying to get that bolt in! And I had to re lift the mls assembly again so that was 3 times on and off that I disturbed the re used mls had gasket! That is not a good idea if your looking to be successful with this type of gasket. It is very sticky and never dries. but the properties are perfect for our application. Now why no valves were bent or why they didnt hit the piston or why this mls reuse didnt fail, well i can think of only one reason, because the result of a good outcome was not likely- ladies and gentlemen may i introduce to you a special friend- JESUS CHRIST.Hes there, always been there, and just loves you and keeps loving you. ANd forgives. Whatdo ya say? Why not silently say something to Him before you rest and sleep for the day...test him-ask him to help you with your struggles, ask him to help you love that person you find it so hard to love. ask him to put the right poeple in your path,... ask him to do a miracle in you life. Just invite Him into your heart, and get ready for the most intimate most special relationship you ever had and will ever have. I now ask forgiveness for unedited talk and go tooo crazy with the gospel thing. Love all of you ... Love is the secret weapon.
I have a 05 Yamaha YZ450F that will not turn over. It started with a bog/hesitation & pop sounds than shuts off completely. Values checked 100% and are good. Air filter checked and good. Fresh gas & oil, new spark plug, added a new fuel screw, cleaned carb 100%. Far as the top/bottom end is concerned in my opinion I believe they're all good because I don't ride it everyday or every week. I have a rebuild carb kit coming this week which I will install it just in case. Do you all think I'm over looking something that needs attention? Maybe the float is stuck or something like that!
I'm just getting around to doing the work...I'm getting conflicting info from different stores online, most say M24 but the shaft treads measure less than that! Thanks again!
instead of removing fly wheel , could I just move head use a cam chain breaking tool, use my wire to join the new chain on , use a magnet pickup tool and turn the engine by hand till new chain is in and old out , then connect the new chain ?:)
Thanks for this! Do you have a recommendation for changing the timing chain on this machine? Also, how often do you have to adjust the manual tensioner? Thanks!
Bill Hardy I would check you timing chain tension every 10-20 hours if you choose to swap to a manual tensioner (with a new chain) it will stretch until the chain reaches it's "set point." Your best bet is to check the factory service manual or owner's manual for timing chain service intervals, but I believe it's 50hrs. I change timing chains with every piston because they are inexpensive ($15-$25 from Hot Cams).
The 2004 has a conventional head (whereas the 2010+ has a reverse head) everything else (components wise) it has the same stuff just it might look different and be on the opposite side (front to back) of the cylinder or head. 2004 will have a 3 lobe intake cam since it's a 5 valve motor.
Question: at TDC, the timing marks on my cams are just a bit above/and below the head. I also can slip the chain over the exhaust cam sprocket with both cams already in the saddle. Do both of these indicate a stretched chain?
Hello, I have a yz 450 2015, I bought it off, I disassembled it to check the time and it was out of time, but when I set the time, how does it have to go, the valves hit the piston and the crank does not lower, can it be please
Matt Mazzei this is a 2010. The whole bike was redesigned this year from the earlier 5 valve bikes. Consequently it's been rediesigned like twice since 2010... So hard to say if your bike is the same as mine.
sean staples No! Get a magnetic bolt retriever and go fishing. If that doesn't work you need to take the flywheel cover off and look there. You may even have to pull the flywheel because it will usually stick to the magnet on the back of the flywheel.
Samuel Romans unbolting the chain tensioner loosens the timing chain. If you set your crank to top dead center via the timing mark on the flywheel you can rotate the cams on tooth at a time to their proper alignment without removing the cams from the head. I already had the head off so it's easier to show how swapping the chain is done.
I'm actually in the process of installing my timing cam chain master link but for some reason I can't get it to be close enough to attract the link back on. I just have 1 more notch closer and it's back in but it won't happen even with the tensioner off. Any tips?????

"Your valves will high five your piston.." ha ha love it

Awesome vid, so helpful to someone doing this for the first time. Much appreciation!

Great vid helped a ton!
Very nice video thanks for the walktrough
watsmet deze you're welcome! Hope it helped you.

2Fiddy 4Cyl maybe. Try it and let me know. I've never had good luck rejoining a chain that spins 10,000 rpm.
gravesdiggerxj I did it for my zxr250, and that spins at 20,000rpm😂😂😂
2Fiddy 4Cyl just because you can doesn't mean it's the fastest or easiest solution 😉
nope...
thats dangerous
u might end up breaking everything
those pins in every link of the chains are locked fitted...
once you pierce it thru you break the lock...
Thanks for this!

Bill Hardy great question and answer.. i had exact same question!
what size hex bit for the the lower crank case plug ? i have the top size for the timing mark but the lower is huge.
You can cheat using a bolt head. Add a couple nuts tightened against each other and you can use a socket.
Anything to be aware of replacing the timing chain on a 2004 yz450f the flywheel looks a little different to yours
The 2004 has a conventional head (whereas the 2010+ has a reverse head) everything else (components wise) it has the same stuff just it might look different and be on the opposite side (front to back) of the cylinder or head. 2004 will have a 3 lobe intake cam since it's a 5 valve motor.

I'd say so
@@gravesdiggerxj Thanks. I replaced the chain and the marks are back in line 👍
When I check actual piston position, flywheel mark is actually a little passed tdc,is that normal ?
shane danforth it shouldn't matter if it's very very slightly off compared to the piston's actual location.
what if you looked at the wrong mark...
say the ignition timing mark its way off the tdc if piston
Hello, I have a yz 450 2015, I bought it off, I disassembled it to check the time and it was out of time, but when I set the time, how does it have to go, the valves hit the piston and the crank does not lower, can it be please
You're likely 180° out
@@gravesdiggerxj ok 👍🏻
Thank you for this!!
You're welcome! Glad I could help!
why is your auto decompression cam on the wrong side?
Matt Mazzei this is a 2010. The whole bike was redesigned this year from the earlier 5 valve bikes. Consequently it's been rediesigned like twice since 2010... So hard to say if your bike is the same as mine.
matt m
i wondered too why
it was on the intake... 😅
tho the later bikes have it on exhaust
Hey there did you have to buy any new gaskets when replacing your timing chain?
Galaracingfilms GR yes, head gasket at minimum. Timing chain tensioner gasket and cylinder base gasket also likely.
gravesdiggerxj thanks I appreciate it! Any tips before I crack it open?
Hey I have dropped that half moon cam spacer in where the chain is. Am I screwed now?
sean staples No! Get a magnetic bolt retriever and go fishing. If that doesn't work you need to take the flywheel cover off and look there. You may even have to pull the flywheel because it will usually stick to the magnet on the back of the flywheel.
Awsome. Already went fishing. I ordered the flywheel puller it's on the way. Thanks for the video it's gonna come in handy.
PS Do you have Instagram?
sean staples @adventurestratton give me a follow.
Mr. Dirty Fender
totaly
😅
Hi what size is you're tusk puller? I'm going to order one but there are different sizes
Look for the one with fitment for your bike
Thanks!
Can someone tell me if this is easy to fix
easy enough with some good tools and a clean work space
bro you skip so much.. like how to get the chain loose and change the timing when the tdc is off
Samuel Romans unbolting the chain tensioner loosens the timing chain. If you set your crank to top dead center via the timing mark on the flywheel you can rotate the cams on tooth at a time to their proper alignment without removing the cams from the head. yasin abdul why take off the master link? just leave or together perhaps
Contact ?? I need help with a yz450f, thanks.
Does this method work on a ttr125
No a ttr125 is a single overhead cam motor with a removable cam gear so it's a bit different.
gravesdiggerxj thank you
Bro your cams are on the wrong side lmfao
The 2010+ YZ 450f has a reverse head... The exhaust port comes out the rear.
Ok didn't know that haha
