It feels that such expression of being in love is lacking in songs of the current era. This song is baring its heart and soul and so fantastic seeing a male group unashamedly portraying these deep felt emotions. A masterpiece.
Their voice recordings on this song is legendary. From what I read “Stewart spent three weeks recording Gouldman, Godley and Creme singing "ahhh" 16 times for each note of the chromatic scale, building up a "choir" of 48 voices for each note of the scale. “. Crazy with the technology of the70s!😎😎
I'm onw one of your older listeners, I've lived through all of this music. It is so much fun to watch the kids of today hearing all of this music for the first time. My generation has heard these songs so many times we tend to take it for granted. 60's and 70's was the best time to grow up, the best music ever. Enjoy the ride young man
@@stuarthastie6374 Nope, not on the Mellotron. They recorded multiple tracks of vocals onto tape loops and then “played” the vocal chords with the mixing desk faders.
This is is written brilliantly. And the music is so unique. You actually feel terrible for the person who is singing. He is trying to convince himself that he is not in love. When you can tell that he is just devastated.
@@Coowallsky I know that was the inspiration for the song, but the meaning of the song is really the singer is trying to convince himself that he is not in love. When you can tell that he is just devastated.
Those voice sounds were made, as far as I can remember, by taping people singing one note. 24 of them, spanning 2 octaves. Each tape was hand spliced into a loop and each run through one track of a 24 track mixing desk. Then they flipped the volume up and down depending on which note they needed. Basically they turned a full-size studio mixing desk into a mellotron. 1975 technology, baby. All analog. You could do it digitally now in about 5 minutes on protools, but it would sound nowhere near as moving. This song was voted best single of the past 25 years in the UK at the time. Then, later that year, Bohemian Rhapsody was released.

Great reaction. I love this song. He's tryng so hard not to fall but he can't help it because she has broken through to him and he's fallen so deep that he's crying.
It's human psychology 101....he's denying he's in love so that he can avoid heartache in the future....but it's clearly already too late for that! It's the illusion that we have any control over our romantic inclinations. So true! Painfully true, as this song shows. It was nice to see how much of an impression this song made on you, Wilbur.
Great reaction from a song that gives me the chills from the delivery and the words. This song came out in 1975, the decade of great music. "I'M NOT IN LOVE" peaked at number 2 for 3 weeks in 1975 on Billboards chart.
This was quite unique in the history of recording music. They created an instrument specially for it and then destroyed it afterward. It consisted of multiple tape loops that could be played like an instrument. Then they spent 3 weeks recording voices - over 600 in all - to deal with all the keys etc. The result was this oceanic sound that nobody has ever heard since. The girl in the middle was the receptionist in the studio.
The secretary at the production studio, Kathy Redfern, wandered in to tell somebody they had a telephone call. Immediately Lol (yes that is the name of a band member) said "That's the voice, her voice is perfect!'. So she became the voice for the "Big boys don't cry...Big boys don't cry..." voiceover.
I like this gem now more than I did when it first came out. This song with the words and background vocals gives you an idea why so many people can't let go of the great songs from the 70's, this is one of the best.
“ This is what I should have been reading “. As someone who once was an English major , I ditto that and will say that is one of the best endorsements for a song I ever heard

The girl who says be quiet big boys don't cry was not a band member or even a recording artist of any kind she was just someone who worked in the studio where they recorded the song she was asked if she would say something for the song

In 1977 as a junior in high school I had a huge crush on a senior named Terri. I remember this song as the one I'd take solace in that she would never be mine. A high school memory that I will always remember. I love this song.
Enjoyed Your Reaction, my friend.... 10cc are one of the greatest groups ever to come out of England and are from The 1970s in particular. Almost every one of their songs is totally different from the next one... Eventually, the 4 Members split into 2 pairs and you MUST watch " Cry" by Godley and Creme but you MUST watch it with the accompanying ground-breaking " Changing Faces" video :)
Well well, my old "friend". Are you still alive and kicking I wonder? We exchanged many comments on Leeds United videos and didn't usually see eye to eye.
@@CB-xr1eg That MUST have been BB "Before Bielsa". After 55 years of hating their dirty, nasty, snide, bullying tactics**** from The Giles/Charlton/Hunter era, I really wanted them to win every Premier League game (apart from Newcastle who has been my second team since 1969) under The Maestro. I loved his adventure and Sportsmanship( like Villa at home) and was sorry to see him go and, weirdly, still want them to win these days. ****I'm terribly sorry about those comments but I got carried away thinking of Revie's Bully Boyz....lol How are you ,Dear "Friend"...
@@Isleofskye No need to apologise, you have your opinion, even if its wrong lol. We'll just agree to disagree on the Revie era and leave it at that. I really enjoyed the Bielsa era up to the point where he was obviously going to get the club relegated as he was too stubborn to change his tactics. of course a lot of injuries didn't help. I think Marsch has done a good job so far but the defence needs to be sorted out, We concede far too easily. Attacking wise we look good with young players lke Gnonto, Summerville, Sinisterra etc and the midfield is pretty solid. I'm doing ok thanks apart from tinnitus which I have recently developed. I found some excercises on a RUclips video which I think are helping. Hope you are in good health and a belated Happy New Year to you.
@@CB-xr1eg Hi Clive(?) Apologies,if I am wrong with the name and I believe it ends with "ley" or similar. I am really sorry to hear about this tinnitus and I am sure you're doing your utmost to stay relaxed and find distractions to counteract it, as best you can. I have always assumed it affects someone more in a quiet environment but may be wrong.. I did have a friend who developed this but then it just went, for no apparent reason and I really hope your tinnitus disappears the same way, my friend.. Stay in touch on any thread and let me know if it is going away or gone altogether. Regards.
@@Isleofskye Hi, Clive is correct. I'm doing the excercises twice a day and I'm finding it helps alleviate the ringing somewhat so I'll carry on doing them. Did you see that Leeds came back from 2-0 down v Cardiff in the cup today? Apparently they didn't play well but at least they didn't lose and its always good to come back and get something.
This song to me is great in that it gives me a groove, a feeling but is totally unconventional in construct. Seems like its a chorus looking for a verse, or the other way around. I love it either way, sounds like totally a studio song, innovative, cool. Great memories of listening to it in the 70's.
If you've ever read Edgar Allan Poe's "A Tell-Tale Heart", the author opens the story professing how he's not crazy. "Would a crazy person say this, would he do that? If I were crazy would I even be able to contemplate this?" You come away after only one paragraph thinking, "This guy is bonkers!" Same thing here. Thou protesteth too much!
Back then, the singers and the band were raw, no special effects to make it sound studio-like and no one cared if it wasn’t perfect. They delivered from their hearts and souls💕🔥
Check out the video to Godley and Creme's "Cry." Kevin Godley and Lol Creme were half of 10CC, and went on to produce a boatload of videos for many of the bands that were staples on early MTV (you know, when they played music videos). "Cry" use of cross fading displays an analog hint at the digital morphing that would follow. Very innovative. Also, Rachel Yamagata does a great cover of "I'm Not In Love."
from the same, very inventive English band: rubber bullets, silly love,i'm mandy fly me,wall street shuffle, life is a minestrone, art for arts sake, the things we do for love.....there are so many ridiculously catchy tunes from these boys.
Yup, they were smart, witty, great musicians and stunning producers. Made you laugh, cry, gasp and swoon and they could also rock out.............some of the cleverest music and lyrics ever written particularly on the earlier albums when Godley and Creme were still part of the band.
Look up where those dreamy sounds are coming from. All the members reccorded each of the 12 notes in the harmonic scale as long as they could hold it. Then those were multi layered to as many tracks as the 4 track could hold. Then, they were played back continuously on 12 ft tape loops each running forever through its own sound board channel. Basically in the days before midi and samples they turned the studio console itself into an instrument.
Nice reaction. Not many artist can make you close your eyes to see. Another artist that does this is Al Stewart. His biggest hit is Year of the Cat. It's the title track to one of his albums. It also includes On the Border which deserves a reaction too. Al Stewart would be best described as a history teacher with music. Time Passages will also get you some views.
Thank you for reacting g to this one!! Now on to Steve Winwood Roll With It Baby. And of course my SRV Life Without You live from the Capitol Theater. Gonna keep requesting the SRV one until you finally react to it 😂. Just make sure it’s the Capitol Theater one.
Somebody phone him up to see if he's okay...I love your heart, Wilburn, more than I can say. He's sick in love, and too messed to just get there. I love the minor magic of this tune and the guile of a man saying he is so above it all in his lyrics----when every listener is hip to his already too late state of mind.
Good review. You listened, you didnt do funny overacting faces, you didnt put the highlight on yourself, but on the song and commented on it when the song was finished. This is how you do it, even in case you dont like the song, or have a different opinion than I have. Will check some more of your videos. Well done.
The song was recorded in a special technique, invented by Sennheiser, dummy head stereophony. if you hear it with an open or half-open headphone, the woman's voice whispers in your left ear . Sennheiser use it to promote this technique
This band you could really dig deep into their catalogue if you wanted to. Another well known song from them is Dreadlock Holiday. But a lot of the stuff people don't know from them are actually perhaps more impressive in their own way. The band loves to use humour and wit in the lyrics and songwriting with great variety. Would recommend giving songs like "The Wall Street Shuffle", "Art for Art's Sake", "I Wanna Rule The World" and "Somewhere in Hollywood", "Don't Hang Up" a go.
Hi, Guy! This song was such a monster smash back in the day, that the BBC did a documentary on it entitled "The Making of I'm Not In Love, By 10cc"! You need to pull that up, then you'll really appreciate the love that was poured into this song! God Bless!... Did you catch the heart beat at the end?.....beat that!!!
I love your reaction to this song. But I want to add that the music and voices behind him are equally impressive. They complete the masterpiece. I watched this twice and the second time, I closed my eyes, because the first time I heard this, there was no video. It took me back.

In 1977 as a junior in high school I had a huge crush on a senior named Terri. I remember this song as the one I'd take solace in that she would never be mine. A high school memory that I will always remember. I love this song.
The voices were recorded separate from the rhythm tracks, then mixed up & down/in & out from the separate multitracks... ingenious
Manchesters finest in the 70's.
This is, indeed, a master-friggin'-piece!!
I’m glad you loved it!! I always thought it was soooo awesome! I always felt bad because I really thought he didn’t love her!☹️
You nailed this reaction!👏❤️
This song to me is great in that it gives me a groove, a feeling but is totally unconventional in construct. Seems like its a chorus looking for a verse, or the other way around. I love it either way, sounds like totally a studio song, innovative, cool. Great memories of listening to it in the 70's.
I believe when he says 'you'll wait a long time for me' he's really say I will wait for you forever.
If you've ever read Edgar Allan Poe's "A Tell-Tale Heart", the author opens the story professing how he's not crazy. "Would a crazy person say this, would he do that? If I were crazy would I even be able to contemplate this?" You come away after only one paragraph thinking, "This guy is bonkers!"
Same thing here. Thou protesteth too much!
ME AND MY WIFE USED TO WALK THRU THE PARK LISTENING TO THIS SONG. STILL LISTENING BUT WE ARE LITTLE OLDER NOW.
He's so in love, he's whipped. Great review!
Back then, the singers and the band were raw, no special effects to make it sound studio-like and no one cared if it wasn’t perfect. They delivered from their hearts and souls💕🔥
You don't know about 10cc do you ? 🤣
Greatest Single EVER Released
from the same, very inventive English band: rubber bullets, silly love,i'm mandy fly me,wall street shuffle, life is a minestrone, art for arts sake, the things we do for love.....there are so many ridiculously catchy tunes from these boys.
even their less deliberately poppy tracks were quite cool. Somewhere in Hollywood, Don't Hang Up, and I Wanna Rule The World is a lot of fun.
Yup, they were smart, witty, great musicians and stunning producers. Made you laugh, cry, gasp and swoon and they could also rock out.............some of the cleverest music and lyrics ever written particularly on the earlier albums when Godley and Creme were still part of the band.
We mustn’t forget The Anonymous Alcoholic.
Yeah, he’s as much in love as John Waite is “Missing You” 😜🥰😊😉😉
... and 'So What' by Liverpool Express.
I suggest the " Changing Face " (video) of "Cry" by Godley and Creme...I think you might like it.
I couldn’t agree more.
Your Going To Like This One .1975 I was in Jr High .This was all over the radio
You nailed it, this is a masterpiece. One of the most beautiful songs.
Time Passages will also get you some views.
oohhhhhhh what a love SONG
No computers were involved in the making of this song and it took 100 or more overdubs for the background and chorus.
April 24th 2021 listening to the song again such a great Jam.
❤. Brings back memories of a time!
Probably the most lucid and cogent reaction to this song I've ever heard.
You should watch the video on The making of I'm Not in Love...the production was amazing
The band loves to use humour and wit in the lyrics and
songwriting with great variety. Would recommend giving songs like "The Wall Street Shuffle", "Art for Art's Sake", "I Wanna Rule The World" and "Somewhere in Hollywood", "Don't Hang Up" a go.
You should watch "The making og I'm not in Love". Amazing watch !! You will enjoy HOW the made the background sounds
You can't hate poetry if you love songs. All songs are poetry set to music. No matter the theme of the song.
It took me back.
she loves him, and he loves her, but he doesn't want to admit it, probably commitment issues LOL
Give him a brake. He’s just playing hard to get.
Hi 👋 how about
Joan Osborne song
WHAT BECOMES OF THE BROKEN HEARTED💔great video and song
Maybe put it on your list
He says he's not in love cause he can't handle how much in love he is .
wilbur the music will bring us back together
That *is* an Awesome Mix tape: nothing ever accumulates on the take-up reel!
Wow!!! I am so glad you answered my request!!! lol...wow....if you like this song....Check out "The Things We Do For Love" by 10cc.....glad you like them.
Hello Anthony.
If you have our friend's ear then, please, suggest the " Changing Face " video of "Cry" by Godley and Creme...
@@Isleofskye Got cha
This song is about his wife who complained that he never told her that he loved her
Really?
@@dgodfrey8953 yes (Well according to Wikipedia atleast 🤷) British sense of humour you see between husband and wife 👍🏼
Great reaction, as usual! You have such respect for these songs and these musicians it is a joy to watch and listen to you! For another great Blindside reaction try "American Woman" by the Guess Who!
I was 9 when this was released but every time I hear it I'm transported back to a farmers field in St Ives Cornwall in 1983 when I saw 10cc perform this classic.
Wilburn, you need to watch this ---> ruclips.net/video/3oxe4mlsQos/видео.html to see how a 4 piece band ended up with 624 backing vocals for that "Ahhhhhhhh" sound.
Great stuff! PLEASE do “Don’t Hang Up” - it’s kinda like a more-grown-up Bohemian Rhapsody
