    brother....I'll tell you what happened....it's the compass that went haywire...the moment you fly around so much metal, the drone is already confused before you take off. I live in singapore, and there is this infamous area where there are open spaces to fly with no interference, but, there is only one takeoff area which is full of metals. We've seen sooooo many drones just drop into this river where people feel it's safe to fly, but, the reason for the failure was where it took off from and the state of all the drone sensors. People tend to ignore the state of the compass..As good as these drones are in giving you a warning, it's best to have a checklist with you and make sure that all sensors are stable, before you take off...

      I think it's true, though. Many years ago, I was flying my drone in Singapore at the Rail Corridor. There was this bridge, the Bukit Timah Truss Bridge. I wanted to get a shot of the drone flying through the bridge, but it suddenly went haywire for no reason and dropped. So, I was thinking it could be because of the metal structure around the bridge...but could you care to share where in singapore is this infamous area?

      @@DJISupportGlobal I am so extremely frustrated with DJI, I used to love Dji, I have flown a handful of drones and finally decided to get the mini 4.
      I got the DJI mini 4 pro less than 48 hours ago...
      I took it on its maiden flight yesterday. 4 minutes into the flight, it said battery OVERCURRENT. Then, it dropped from 86 to 70 within seconds. It was in CINEMATIC mode... I started heading right back to home... As I was coming back home, it went from 44% to 10% within seconds. Then it went to the sport mode and fell out of the Sky and crashed breaking the front arm off completely and destroyed the gimble.
      I called DJI and they told me I had to use my care refresh 😡 . . I am extremely frustrated. I don't think I'll ever buy DJI again. This was my first DJI drone , and it has been a terrible experience.
      I have heard so many good things about DJ. I, however, I have not experienced that 😞 My drone is on its way to DJI via ups.......
      I'm out money and time...I don't know if I'll sell it when I get it back. I don't know what to do. I'm terribly upset. Only 25 total minutes of flight time..... 🤦 I think DJI has lost me as a customer that quickly 😢

    I had a similar accident with my new mini 4 Pro. Flying outside over a street, home point updated, perfect gps/RC signal, slow cinematic fly over a street with no trees but buildings on both sides. All went well for the 45 seconds, then I decided to let it hover for few seconds to let some pedestrians pass. All the sudden I noticed it started drifting on the left side. A message briefly appeared on the remote”Motor unable to rotate. Check objects blocking motor or contact DJI for support “ It started spinning like a ballerina and crashed several times on the facades of the building, I wasn’t able to control it. It happened so fast. To cut the story short, did what you did, send it to DJI. They have been absolutely brilliant, the smoothest experience I have ever had with any customer service. Replaced free of charge including both ways postage.

    I recently got a DJI mini 4 pro and it is a blast to fly. My previous drone was a DJI FPV and damn they have a lot of cool features. I am enjoying the follow mode on the mini and love taking professional photos, and for the FPV you get to feel as free as a bird as you weave through trees at 87 mph. Coming from a Mavic 3 I was really thrown by how light the Min 4 Pro is, the first thing it did when I took it up was blow about a block away, and this was in a light enough breeze that I would've never considered in at an issue with my Mavic 3. I then had to struggle against the wind to get it back and it took several minutes, wasn't sure I could do it. It's a great little drone but it freaked me out enough to make me return it.

    Here's my take: the first pass was good, but due to so much metal, the compass is not stable after this pass. In the second pass, you can note a small drift on the drone at the start before the stick input. THAT SHOULD NOT HAPPEN. That's a dead give away that there is something wrong. You don't want a drone to drift even a cm indoors if all sensors are stable.

    • @TheDroneGeek
      @TheDroneGeek  11 месяцев назад +1

      Typically I'd agree with you, but this time I'm not so sure. No alerts. No warnings. Everything was good upon take-off. That drift could have been anything from a slight adjustment in position due to airflow between the buildings and facilities to a literal input from me on the controls (remember, I cut the clip, so what might look one way to you might not really be an accurate depiction of what is going on).
      I really think this was a straight up malfunction of the motor. Even the way it falls out of the air tells me that it wasn't a dead drop. There's a violent jerking motion right before the drone completely fails that tells me one of the motors on the right side of the drone experienced a malfunction. Somebody suggested a metal shaving or some other debris from the manufacturing happening in the facility could have gotten into a motor and caused an issue and I tend to think that's a more likely scenario than anything else.
      I've had compasses act wonky before. You're right, the issues caused by a malfunctioning compass can be as mild as a drift or inability to hold position to something as drastic as a complete failure of the drone resulting in a crash. But there were no indications of anything like this happening in that moment. At the very least I would have seen the notifications in the app after the drone had crashed and had my answer immediately. The only notifications I had were to tell me that the gimbal was malfunctioning (a result of the impact) and that the drone had experienced a hard impacted.
      Still, I appreciate your input and speculation! I wish DJI had been more helpful in actually informing me of what happened. In the past they had been extremely communicative about problems I would send drones in for and I'd have answers to walk away with. This time it was more about just getting me set up with a new drone and less about educating me about what could have happened -- another reason I believe this was a malfunction with the drone itself and not a pilot error or environmental factor.
      Cheers!

    Hmm did I miss it or did you leave out the most important piece of information? What caused it to drop? I just ordered mine and will pick it up when I am in UK next month. Now I am very worried. I live in Nigeria so if mine falls out of the sky there is nowhere to send it in to. If that happened I would have to wait until whenever I travel to Europe. And now I am thinking I should never try flying it over water in case it falls out of the sky over water. Hoping your situation is a once in a billion occurrence and not a common fault with the drone.

    • @TheDroneGeek
      @TheDroneGeek  9 месяцев назад +1

      I never received final confirmation from DJI. Just a replacement. Based on that information and the nature of the crash, I’m convinced it was a failure in the back right motor. Whether internal or via an external force (i.e. debris lodging itself into the motor), because I had VLOS with the drone, several witnesses, and never lost connection to the drone itself during the flight - not even after the crash itself.

    Interesting video - thanks for sharing. A pro photographer fixed wing model club mate (who flies drones every working day) was really interested in this and one of his ‘always do’ checklist items is an IMU calibration before (and during) tricky indoor shoots

    • @TheDroneGeek
      @TheDroneGeek  9 месяцев назад +2

      IMU calibrations are extremely important - particularly if you plan on flying in a location like the one I was flying. I calibrated the IMU inside the building for this reason just before takeoff of the first flight I had with it (this was flight number 2 in this video - shot the same day and the drone never left the building).
      100% agree that IMU calibrations are important, but unfortunately are also one of the most overlooked calibrations.

  • @randytate

    3:48 the collision avoidance camera entered the frame, indicating that the attitude of the aircraft had a sudden and severe downward pitch and leftward roll. Then there's a rapid upward pitch and clockwise roll, indicates you lost your rear-right motor, causing the aircraft to flip over back and to the right (not to quote Oliver Stone's JFK). If I had to guess, that motor had a sudden malfunction causing it to spike its RPMs, so the system shut it off, or the malfunction killed it. The crash then resulted. That's my analysis. I'm not an expert.

      Like I said, it's a great program for people that need their drone replaced on a quick turnaround and the hold makes sense in that regard...but I myself had a really difficult time getting around that prompt to file for a standard repair inquiry...just seemed a little baity to me and did not sit well with me in the moment as I had JUST lost the drone earlier in the afternoon and was already pretty upset about it. I mean, I'm a big boy and I processed those feelings, but still...never feels good to lose a drone to something like that and then having it feel like they're just trying to upsell and squeeze money out of me rather than honor the original agreement felt slimy in that moment.

    Similar happened to me with mavic 2 pro, and it was inside one huge hall of shippyard... One of the possible errors here is due to larg amount of metal, signal interferance and issues due to not stabile gps signal as indors with part of gps yes, but part of non stabile gps. And it goes it own way. Loads of metal in such close distance to drone, to RC and also inbetween... Makes bigger issue than flight to 10km distance.

    two times I lost altitude on my M4P unexpectedly.
    The battery is supposed to be a Li-Ion?, so it should be able to go down to 2.7 V, BUT it acts like a Li-Po, with a 3.2 V minimal.
    My first "drop" was from 20' up when my battery hit 3.15 V, it just quit flying, like the rotors couldn't keep up(they were turning still), just not enough draw? Fell straight down.
    The second time I was using waypoints.
    I set first waypoint with drone facing North while 80' up, then flew out 50' South then set a second waypoint at 60' altitude pointing West, then flew northeast 50' and set a third waypoint at 40' altitude facing East.
    You can manually fly it just fine, BUT when you run the program, depending upon which direction the "drone logic" decides to turn the facing:
    If it turns counterclockwise, it suddenly goes from showing ~55' altitude after making the turn on the second waypoint to showing 80-90' altitude and will fly right into the ground as it tries to get back "down" to the 40' target of the third waypoint. If you force it to land it shows negative altitude until you power cycle or take off and make a new home point.
    Clockwise turn does not result in this behavior. It smoothly turns from West through North to East facing over that 50' move.
    I think it has to so with the short distances and acute angle of the "turn" it's trying to do.
    I tried it at 150' per section and it runs fine. I tried it with altitude of 80' for each point and it runs just fine.
    It's only when set up with harder turns and the "logic" choosing" a counterclockwise turn that it happens.
    Been fun to play with, but I know what to avoid now and it's not a big deal to me. Neither case resulted in any discernable damage to the drone, and I love this thing. LOL

I didn't hit anything. It quite literally fell out of the sky. Luckily I was only 20-30 feet in the air and nobody was walking under the drone, but it still was enough to force me to cash in a Refresh. Which was great for getting a new Mini 4 Pro, but sucked as far as having to cough up another $65 and wait for like 10-days for a new one to get to me...

    Possibly magnetic interference especially with all the metal and machinery may have affected the speed of a motor. I have a pair of metal ladders bottom of my garden all my 4 dji drones run into compass errors iF I take off from there shortly after they start to drift . But I think you're motor speed got intercepted due to magnetic pull. I know they say don't take off near metal objects like grids ect

    • @curbie1150

      well that doesnt make sense, as metal ladders are aluminum, and not magnetic, therefore not affecting any

      I don't hate the model. Granted, it's not ideal for everyone, so I hope they don't make it the ONLY option for the Care Refresh in the future...but for people that need a quicker turnaround to get a drone back in the air, it's a good program. It gets the customer their drone faster and protects DJI from fraudulent claims. Since I had the Mavic 3 as the primary workhorse for the job and for most of my other clients, I didn't need the Mini 4 Pro back right away, so saving the hassle of a hold on funds in my account was the preferred method. I was able and willing to wait a little longer to get the drone back!

    I'm not rich, but I know if I buy one of these, there is risk. I lose it, that's it! Gone. From the initial decision to purchase it, I become okay with it. Of course I'll do what I can to recover it, but I won't become a whining "Karen" and bitch about it if they don't follow through at DJI. I will only act pleasantly surprised. I won't fly my new one any distance until I've had lots of other fun with it, here in the house, and closely flying outside. I play it safe. I am really happy with how it takes cool videos going around a local object, and running along sand piles at the beach, around shoreline areas, directly overhead,...,...,..

    • @TheDroneGeek
      @TheDroneGeek  4 месяца назад +2

      There IS risk, you're right...but a failure from inside the drone is not your fault and you should not be held solely liable for it -- especially when it is a new product. If I had had this for 4 years and it failed, I'd still be mad, but I wouldn't go to DJI expecting them to do anything about it. It would also be well outside of warranty at that point, so no reason to believe they would do anything about it. If you buy products like this, understand that there is a warranty that goes along with the product as well as an extended warranty you can purchase from DJI...if anything goes wrong that is not your fault, you SHOULD be taken care of and DJI wants to take care of you -- not just because it's good for their reputation as a company, but because they use reports like this to determine if there are recurring flaws with the drone and can address those issues if they prove to be persistent. Absolutely no reason in 2024 that you, as a consumer, should take ANYTHING on the chin when it comes to the products you purchase.

    • @artykohl1118

      @TheDroneGeek On that I totally agree. I bought a mini 3 about a year ago and it wouldn't go past powering up, idling, and then not responding, then shutting off. I spent a whole day on that and couldn't make it work. Took it back to Microcenter. I bought a mini 4 two weeks ago. Made it work right out of the box with no glitches. No headaches or struggles. I like having a physical store nearby to take back the bad, because the old formula has always been: If anything works well longer than a week, it keeps working for years after. If it breaks a few weeks or months later, rarely happens, I figure it's my loss. Throw it in the "parts" pile.....lol

    Did DJI determine what caused the malfunction? I know that if you do the Express service it's a one for one swap after you pay the fee, so no reason would be provided. However, if you went the other route wouldn't they provide a reason for the malfunction? I ask because my mini 3 pro appeared to lose thrust momontarily in flight in the front left motor causing it to tilt excessively throwing a gimbal angle error in the log for the flight. While in flight I saw the drone pitch suddenly on the controller then recover. I believe the M3P and M4P share parts so my concern is that there is a hardware issue that could crop up at any time.
    Thanks. Here's the video of the glitch. 'ruclips.net/video/x93Cv6GBPnQ/видео.html'

    I was taking off with my mini3pro and one motor stopped. With a watch makers eyeglass I could see a small chip of something really magnetic. Needed a toothpick, which had to be sharpened and finally a bit of vaseline on to finally catch the chip. It was just big enough to move and jam the rotor. It almost seemed like a bit of broken magnet that had dislodged from the motor. I fitted the alloy motor covers, but not really happy with the loose fit, and if you use superglue, you need a minute amount. Tried decal tape, but even the thinnest was too thick. I wonder if something happened momentary to your motor and then it lodged out of the way and was free again? Best Dave
