Thank you for this video!! I was just complaining about the scratches on my aquarium and your video just happens to pop up in recommended. What a coincidence.
came back to this video because i know joey knows what he's doing more than some other people in the hobby. found it hilarious how he signs the glass to gain our trust like we would think he's switch out the glass on us. lmao some magician razzledazzle to keep yall entertained. This man is a triple threat.
For glass with minor scratching like he showed, you can use auto body rubbing compound. It's cerium oxide in a paste base, cheap and readily available. Follow with auto body polishing compound, much finer, aluminum oxide in a paste base. Again cheap and readily available. Be sure to clean thoroughly and use separate cloths, buffer pads etc with each compound. Clean up is easy with dish soap and water. An electric auto polishing buffer will make this go more quickly and they are relatively inexpensive compared with replacing a scratched aquarium.
David Johnston - good advice, and the bonus of buying a proper polishing buffer is you can use it to remove light surface scratches from car windows and headlights - in most cases it will be cheaper to buy than replacing glass components, immediately recouping the initial outlay. Plus of course it can also be used for its intended purpose 😄
Joey, I don't know if you'll ever read this comment but I'm so thankful for you!! It's AMAZING that I watch each and everyone of your new videos but when I have a question about something in the hobby, you always have a vid to answer it!!! 😊 You are AMAZING!!!!
OK, so I got a scratch on the inside of my 50g acryllic from a magnetic cleaner and a single grain of sand. I obtained 1000 and 2000 grit wet/dry sand paper and Macquires plastx. I have a piece of thick acrylic from the hardware store to practice on. I made a scratch and then followed your instructions. After polishing, I can still see the swirls from the sanding, though the single scratch is gone. My question now is this, would using a higher grit paper, say 4k to 7k, and then polishing eliminate this also?
I didn't see much of a difference on the glass, the scratches were still there. But the nice thing about glass is you can always just replace that pane. Just use a razor to remove the sealant and put in a new pane. The scratched pane can be useful for scrap material.
Hi Joey, thank you for your amazing videos. I'm a fan of your DIY videos and recently finished my very own acrylic tank following your videos. I've got a question for you and was wondering if you could help...while making the tank I did scratch the tank at some places and wanted to remove them. I tried looking for scratch removers but couldn't find any acrylic cleaners around my local stores. I've heard you can use toothpaste to clean the acrylics from headlights of a car. Can I use it to clean my tank as well? Will it be safe for both the acrylic and the fishes? Thanks a ton for your work...keep it coming
6 years and now 9 years makes a diffrence in a person look. I can not stand getting old, it now fun.. Just the quality of filming and audio is much better now.
Joey, this video will help me.. I thought you would never read the comment I made in your last video..thank you so much! Many people from my forum are also asking about this..I hope to post your video and hopefully get you more subscribers! Thanks a lot!
I just picked up a used 200 gallon tank, 7 feet long by 2 feet high roughly. The previous owner must have used a Brillo pad to clean the glass. I'm definitely going to try the techniques in your video. I think I'm in for about a week of work though!
I am with the Capital Cichlid Association of the East Coast.. and i browse at MFK sometimes.. thank you so much!! i am sure a lot of people will be helped by your video.. allow me to advertise your channel on my forum!
So i followed every bit of there instructions in this video down to using the same hand tools and pad size for the buffer. It has completely ruined my 140 gallon tank. Not only did it not get the scratches out but it put a haze across the glass. Now I have to spend $1200 to replace the glass.
This did not help me at all with the cirium oxide .I spend 5 hours on 1 foot of glass.. It came out a bit clearer, but 80% of scratches remained. Gave up on the other 4 foot It was a damn tough job as well, arms had a good work out.
i do very infrequent water changes but i do clean the filters about once a month but no it means you have found the right setup and amount of fish food for your fish i would recommend a small algae eater as they will always find enough to live on and can be there just encase you do start to have a problem without one but congrats on the setup
Awesome video! If you are constantly removing scratches or hazing you can use this kit called Micro Mesh... They have kits just for removing scratches and polishing acrylic...
Hey Joey, How do you clean all the residue left over from the buffing and sanding and make sure it gone, so you don't kill everything in the tank once you put all the animals back into it.. I'm always paranoid on stuff like that.
great vid can you help i have a glass aquarium and i have one 4inch scratch on it and if i run my finger nail over it it catches what can i do what you did would it work or should i call some one to do it please help
I just got an old 45gal glass aquarium. While removing the old silicone - this tank was built in the 90's and had been "patched" - I noticed an 8 inch scratch in the glass which I can catch my finger nail on. Can I leave it and put the scratch to the back, or will it affect the integrity of the tank?
Great videos! Will the glass techniques you used work for "hazed /etched" glass. I'm assuming they are mineral deposits. Thanks again for all the info you provide!
I have a sort of deep scratch on my fluval chi tank. Its not a crack because no water is leaking out and it is only on the inside of the tank. It seems to be deep enough that light can mae it shine if viewed from a specific angle. Is this something to be worried about? What should I do?
Hey man. I really enjoy your videos. I just received an acrylic aquarium and it pretty scuffed up. I’m gonna use your advice in this DIY video to buff it all out. Can you give me advice on what to do to clean the inside really good after I buff the inside so that it’s clean and ready to put water and fish in?
Hi, I live in Aruba and I have managed to lightly scratch my Knekt acrylic dome, would this solution work for this very thin acrylic? I also can't find Novus here, is there a good substitute? Thank you.
I bought a used 75 gallon acrylic fish tank. It has scratches buy still great shape. I tried remove the scratches. Like you showed. But did not work it is even more cloudy and I do not have a lot of help were I am at. I sanded it down and then used the scratch remover and looks worse. What can I do?
I used Mothers polishing kit for my acrylic tank and it worked great. I was able to get rid of the big scratches, down to small scratches. I was just impatient, had I had alot more patience then I could've gotten my acrylic tank restore to maybe 85-90 percent new condition again.
I think you should re-do all these videos now that you have been on youtube for so long and have over a million subs your more seasoned your camera equipment is better your microphone is better your confidence is better your back ground on the videos would be cooler if you somehow set it up in the gallery
Would this work on a Glass aquarium that has some sort of stain on it that i can't seem to get off? -- I've used everything from Vinegar to 0000 Steel Wool, NO LUCK. I thought it was Calcium build up so i tried Muratic Acid-- it would have eaten it up like a Snow Cone in a Fire... BUT Still no luck.
i brought a 200GAL for my 3 Oscar fish and the previous owner had used it as a salt water tank, they clearly were very careless as all sides of the tank is scratched to F. This is helpful.
Your'e using the wrong buffing pads for the glass. You will just damage the glass further and will create more swirls on it as the compound you are using is an impure cerium oxide. Try using Optical Grade Ceroxid! =) It works!
If your nail gets caught on it then there's a possibility, reall just depends on how deep it is and if you're tank gets bumped into if any. Also depends on the location. If its close to the bottom theres more stress then it would be if it were closer to the top
Can the novus be used on the inside of the tank without hurting the fish, or is this only for outside the tank scratches? All my scratches are inside my tank not outside. ...thanks
hi joey, i made a canister filter based on your video. It worked for two day then start to get flooded and ripping out from the top? i keep trying different ways to fix it but the problem wont go away. Can you give me some advice?
I have seen “how to video” on cleaning headlight glass and acrylic covers. They use toothpaste for fine polishing. Would toothpaste be okay for a finer polish?
I think the toothpaste works because of the baking soda in there. I don't see why it wouldn't work but I think for even a ten gallon tank you would be looking at a lot of toothpaste.
I bought a second hand acrylic aquarium that has some deep scratches. I tried wet sanding with 600 grit first. I tried both by hand and with a power sander and it doesn't feel like or look like the aquarium is being sanded down. Any Suggestions?
Life saver. I hate these scratches and it didn’t even cross my mind you could remove them from glass. I was originally tryna find a better mag for my bow front, so it didn’t scratch anymore.
how do you remove inner scratches from a filled tank without emptying it ? You can't use novius, i've tried from 1000 grit to 12000 grit, the result is good, but looking from side to front, or front to side, I can see the internal haze.
Hi there i just started using my aqu the problem i have now is food floating on surface and there is allot of sort of dirt in my tank what should i do?

Great video. What kind of pad do you use on the buffer?
I think it's kind of funny! On these older videos Joey looks like a teenager in his face and build! LOL, too funny!

Quick question If I dont have many scratches but just want to get rid of haziness can I just start using the novice instead of sanding it?
I just picked up a used 200 gallon tank, 7 feet long by 2 feet high roughly. The previous owner must have used a Brillo pad to clean the glass. I'm definitely going to try the techniques in your video. I think I'm in for about a week of work though!

Will it leave any type of haze? About to start and just want to make sure before going threw with it because I'm doing my whole tank

My tank is tempered glass will this method still work? I have a dremel and glass bits the scratches that I want to remove are basically superficial.
Thanks for the video! which method works better for removing scratches from epoxy resin surface?
Cool video Thanks Joey.
As other people have asked how do you remove the left over product and is it harmful to fish? Anyone chime in please?

Would you have to remove all the fish and water from the tank?

Will the glass techniques you used work for "hazed /etched" glass. I'm assuming they are mineral deposits. Thanks again for all the info you provide!

Hard water etches are made of mineral deposits. I use vinegar and a razor to get them out.
I don't have an aquarium but a computer with an acrylic see-through panel and multiple very tiny (annoying) scratches, will this work on that?
