They have completely different metrics compared to the Grammys. Of course, Mariah would get the awards based on objective measurable parameters. The Grammys are based on the VOTES OF 12K MEMBERS OF NARAS ACCORDING TO THEIR OPINIONS. So you can see with that fact alone how the winners could get wild disagreements and controversies just like in the other field that involves voting: Politics.

The epic and sustained Grammy snubs were the final nail in the coffin of their marriage. Mariah worked incredibly hard for years in "Sing Sing" during their relationship. If he was going to be so controlling, then Mottola should have been able to secure some Grammys beyond her debut. The fact that Butterfly was also summarily snubbed is further proof they didn't fully appreciate her titanic talents. Kiss From a Rose and Jagged Little Pill are iconic though. I daresay they both needed it for their careers more so than Mariah.

I hate to tell you but the mid 90s on was about soft rock music, poetry music, and Jam bands. That was what radio was playing. Mariah after 96 fell off the map in top 40 airplay. She bounced back in mid 99 when pop music and latin music was taking over and sex started selling.

Honestly, the industry had heavy hitters across all genres back in the day. I saw a grammy clip where Patti Labelle, Whitney Houston, and Anita Baker where all nominated in the same R&B category. When Mariah lost to Alanis Morrisette for album category, I was like🤷♂️. They both had great albums. This type of music quality doesn't exist anymore on the mainstream circuit and that's why music award shows are pathetic now.

I think industry politics played a part in what happened. Mariah being married to the president of Sony Music at the time, probably made the voters think it was conflict of interest. Sure Tommy was able to secure the nominations and wins for his other Columbia artists but Mariah was another case. Whitney was Clive Davis’s Arista golden goose but wasn’t married to him. Celine was married to her manager but Rene didn’t fully work for Columbia/ Sony , he at worked WITH C/S in negotiating her contracts, tours, public appearances and supervised her studio sessions. I also think why Diana Ross never won a competitive Grammy during her career was off and on relationship w Berry Gordy head of Motown. Does anyone else see the patterns?
But the grammys are supposed to be about merit (who is the best), the petty politics are exactly why no one cares nor watches their show anymore. The weeknd and Ariana Grande issue was the final nail in the coffin.
Unfortunately for Mariah the Grammys were actually filled with really good, equal quality music back and she just didn’t come out on top that year. Plus it was a different musical landscape. These days ppl feel whoever’s most popular should win (which is why the Grammys suck now) but the Grammys actually used to be much more prestigious than just a popularity contest (try the billboard awards sis). The Grammys actually used to be a showcase of the best talents and had some really huge live musical moments. Today they don’t have that. What matters most for the fans is daydream is a great album. We don’t get any coins, any accolades, any benefits from some other person getting an award. Mariah achieved a lot and made millions off this album. We didn’t. We do get to appreciate great music (the only thing) and Daydream is just that. GREAT friggin MUSIC. Relax and just enjoy the music. That’s ur ONLY option. Fantasy (sweet dub extended mix) is the best song from this era IMO. That last “it’s just aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa” is iconic.

Album of The Year - Mariah This should've gone to Mariah. Although JLP and Daydream are equivalent in album sales, JLP fails to carry the same weight. Not only did it fail to produce a number one single (which baffles me that such a massive album wouldn't have one) but it was not nearly as record shattering and history rewriting as Daydream. Commercially, I would say that Daydream outperformed the album. But, JLP was still very much close and it wasn't that big of a snub.
Daydream has sold 20 million copies while Jagged Little Pill sold 33 million. Daydream was huge but JLP was even bigger and more impactful in the industry and artistry in music. The influence of JLP is, to this day, far greater than Daydream.

She wasn't snubbed. Those winners are insanely talented artists, just like Mariah, and produced amazing music that year, just like MC. I'm okay with the winners. Regarding the best album award, as much as I love Daydream, JLP by Alanis was a much more impactful album culturally. It's incredibly revered by a LOT of artists of all genres of music. That body of work by Alanis was just astounding. Totally deserved the award.

Yeah this was tough year to win anything. Many artist didn't win had so much great music. Personally I think Joan Osbourne's whole album was so authentically good. We also had Coolio's classic gangster's paradise, TLC waterfalls that didn't win. It's actually a huge deal only to be nominated, it just wasn't good for pr point of view how she was nominated so many and ended up not winning any. But still by nominated that many proves that Daydream represented one of the most influential music during the era among so so many great classics.
1995 really was an excellent year for music, and most of the Grammy wins have still held up from that year fairly well. Still, it does immensely that she was so snubbed.

Honestly, the industry had heavy hitters across all genres back in the day. I saw a grammy clip where Patti Labelle, Whitney Houston, and Anita Baker where all nominated in the same R&B category. When Mariah lost to Alanis Morrisette for album category, I was like🤷♂️. They both had great albums. This type of music quality doesn't exist anymore on the mainstream circuit and that's why music award shows are pathetic now.

What I don't understand is, at least on Wikipedia, it says the album was released on October 3rd, 1995 meaning that the album should not have qualified for Best Pop Vocal Album and Album of the Year until the 1997 ceremony celebrating the best music released between October 1, 1995, until September 30th, 1996. Also, One Sweet Day shouldn't have been eligible since it was released in November 1995. Had Mariah competed for awards in 1997, she easily would have swept.

I think industry politics played a part in what happened. Mariah being married to the president of Sony Music at the time, probably made the voters think it was conflict of interest. Sure Tommy was able to secure the nominations and wins for his other Columbia artists but Mariah was another case. Whitney was Clive Davis’s Arista golden goose but wasn’t married to him. Celine was married to her manager but Rene didn’t fully work for Columbia/ Sony , he at worked WITH C/S in negotiating her contracts, tours, public appearances and supervised her studio sessions. I also think why Diana Ross never won a competitive Grammy during her career was off and on relationship w Berry Gordy head of Motown. Does anyone else see the patterns?

Unfortunately for Mariah the Grammys were actually filled with really good, equal quality music back and she just didn’t come out on top that year. Plus it was a different musical landscape. These days ppl feel whoever’s most popular should win (which is why the Grammys suck now) but the Grammys actually used to be much more prestigious than just a popularity contest (try the billboard awards sis). The Grammys actually used to be a showcase of the best talents and had some really huge live musical moments. Today they don’t have that. What matters most for the fans is daydream is a great album. We don’t get any coins, any accolades, any benefits from some other person getting an award. Mariah achieved a lot and made millions off this album. We didn’t. We do get to appreciate great music (the only thing) and Daydream is just that. GREAT friggin MUSIC. Relax and just enjoy the music. That’s ur ONLY option. Fantasy (sweet dub extended mix) is the best song from this era IMO. That last “it’s just aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa” is iconic.

This should've gone to Mariah. Although JLP and Daydream are equivalent in album sales, JLP fails to carry the same weight. Not only did it fail to produce a number one single (which baffles me that such a massive album wouldn't have one) but it was not nearly as record shattering and history rewriting as Daydream. Commercially, I would say that Daydream outperformed the album. But, JLP was still very much close and it wasn't that big of a snub.
Daydream has sold 20 million copies while Jagged Little Pill sold 33 million. Daydream was huge but JLP was even bigger and more impactful in the industry and artistry in music. The influence of JLP is, to this day, far greater than Daydream.

We also had Coolio's classic gangster's paradise, TLC waterfalls that didn't win. It's actually a huge deal only to be nominated, it just wasn't good for pr point of view how she was nominated so many and ended up not winning any. But still by nominated that many proves that Daydream represented one of the most influential music during the era among so so many great classics.

You didn't even talk about the biggest egregious snub which was the Best Pop Collaboration category where Mariah and Boyz II Men lost to The Chieftains and Van Morrison. That was her real shot at a Grammy that year and they decided to hand it to someone else. She also got snubbed in the Best R&B Female Performance category. We can talk about that one too.
