One short year before Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford), ends up in far-off India, after having a narrow escape from death in 1935 Hong Kong. I saw Temple 1st, then Last Crusade, then Raiders, I think it helped me have a more balanced view of the series because I wasn’t viewing them in context of when they came out. It’s because of this that I always really enjoyed Temple & never understood why everyone else disliked it.
I love Temple of Doom, but Raiders is my favorite.
I love how Jones says to Marcus in Raiders “I don’t believe in magic, a lot of superstitious hocus pocus” yet a year ago you almost had your heart ripped out by black magic haha
He probably wasn’t being entirely honest because who would believe that if they haven’t seen it. And he didn’t believe in Jewish religion till the end. If I saw a cult that had a real evil god behind it, wouldn’t make me believe in every other religion.
@@thatcreepyberdinthecorner1097 Good point and by the end of Doom he even says the stone would just be another rock collecting dust since they lost the other ones that glow when joined together. No one would believe its power anyway. So he probably could've put it out of his mind and let his story remain a secret since in his mind it was one rare isolated experience that would never happen again.. until he found the ark and grail haha.

I find Indy at his most heroic in this film. When he has the village's sacred stone and the two others (presumably to sell to a museum), he doesn't leave...because he hears a child screaming. He goes into the tunnels with no plan and is captured, but eventually rescues the children and returns them to their village safely, and for no reward. He doesn't even care that he doesn't have the other stones; the children are home and the village is alive again.
Yeah, but I found him to be much more heroic in Cristal Skull and Dial of Destiny, because finally, saving people and saving the world (not just his loved ones like in Last Crusade...) are his top priorities from the get go. And Helena Shaw goes through the arc he had in Temple. Am I the only one who felt a lot of compassion for her in the "Basil Going Mad in front of his frightened 12 year old daughter" flashback?.
While I do prefer 'Raiders' and 'Last Crusade', 'Temple of Doom' features perhaps my favourite Indy moment of them all: the rescuing of the slave children. Seeing the camera focusing on Indy's silhouette, then zooming unto his face, full of rage and hatred, followed by him punching out the guard, is such an epic moment. One of the most heroic moments in cinema, in my book.
The music written by John Williams helps tremendously.

That is a such a moment, and it's set up wonderfully by the line before "all of us." Framed perfectly, scored perfectly, just a great moment in film.
For me is “Mola Ram, prepare to meet Kali! IN HELL!” Making those face is just unstoppable laugh
I love that scene. I know it's a white saviour narrative, but I think it's just so damn epic that it would be mean to not forgive thay for the epicity that we got from it.
Short Round's theme is easily one of my favorite John Williams piece. It just makes me feel like the whole world is ahead of me.

I was born in May 1974. I saw Temple of Doom in theaters in June 1984. I was a 10 year old boy watching the most amazing (and really scary) adventure film ever made. It is not only my favorite Indiana Jones movie... It is my favorite movie of all time. Great job on the video! :)

The only people who like this movie were those who saw it as children.

The opening scene of "Temple of Doom" is one of my favorites in all of cinema
I remember having a moment of panic that I was in the wrong theater~haha. It was so unexpected and great.

@@FilmSpeak I liked that you pointed out the "satirical" nature of it. I remember as an Indian-American child how much this movie bothered my family. Kids at school would ask if we eat snakes and monkey brains. Really made me wish they'd left in that line about Hindus not eating meat, which isn't technically accurate either. BEEF is forbidden, other meat CAN be forbidden depending on the sect you follow.
One time I was in india, I was on a tour with some young western backpackers. We were being served lunch. Many of them, being young and naive, were nervous about what we were about to be served. So I had much fun by saying it would be “snake surprise” and “monkey brains”. Though the reference flew over most heads, I relished the moment.

Indian food was a pleasant surprise after growing up with temple of doom lol. Probably the most delicious food in the world tbh.
It was a smart move to set Temple before Raiders, so that you're not technically following up on such a massive hit story-wise. And the way Indy is portrayed in Temple really helps explain and even improve audience appreciation for how Indy behaves in Raiders. Pretty genius!
Except it makes the gag with the gun (shooting the swordsman in black) go out of sync.
In Temple of Doom, when Indy reaches for his gun but it's not there, we know what's on his mind because we saw the similar (and more successful) move in Raiders

@@mikewilson714 The comical timing is for the benefit of the viewer, not the character. The important part is that WE get the joke, not Indy. From Indy's point of view, he just reached for his gun and it wasn't there, and that's a bummer in that kind of situations, no matter if that's the first time or not.

Temple of Doom is in my Top 5 Spielberg movies. I've been saying for years that it's the best movie of the franchise. It has the best flow, pace, and heart. The story is dark and scary, but still has a lot of humor. It's one of Harrison Ford's best performances period, not just in an Indy movie. Short Round is great. And contrary to popular opinion, Kate Capshaw is a scene-stealer as Willie, annoying in the best possible way because she's hilarious.
That is sad.
I fully agree, I love it all! Such a wild ride, and I so enjoy the energy Kate Capshaw brings to the character of Willie - she is perfect as the fish out of water, in Indy's world!

This movie has the most heart to me, Indy has a clear character arc going from a skeptic and a tomb raider, to a believer and the true archeologist we know him as now.
Thank you for this video essay. "Temple" is my favorite Indy movie by far, it's just relentlessly fun. Your discussion of Indy's character evolution during this movie and how it connects to the other two movies is very convincing. I also think that his relationships with Shorty and Willie are at the core of why this movie works perfectly.
Temple of Doom and BATMAN returns share similarities duo to it's darkness and putting studio exces off but hugely underated
Batman Returns is my favorite Christmas movie.
Although I love the three movies equally nowadays, ToD was definitely my favorite one as a kid (and Raiders was my least favorite--go figure). I didn't even think about it being "dark", I only noticed how fast-paced and entertaining it was. It also probably helped that there was a kid sidekick to root for. I'm not sure that I ever realized Indy's character arc that you described here, but that makes it even better.
You don't think the third movie is paint by numbers dud? I think the drop off in quality is so sharp, I've only seen the film in it's entirety twice where I've seen the first two over and over.
I keep hearing ToD had a fast pace but I think it actually has a slower pace than Raiders and Crusade. The opening action scene ending with the trio floating down the river ends at minute 19. The next "action" event is the fight with the guard at the palace and that doesn't happen until minute 50. That's a solid 30 minutes of mostly just talking (village, jungle, palace, dinner, will they/won't they sex scene).
After that you also don't really get anything "fast paced" (bugs/trap room, watching the sacrifice, trio getting captured, Indy forced to drink blood, Willie prepped for sacrifice). The action doesn't start until Short Round wakes Indy up which is at 84 minutes in. I would actually argue the movie is quite slow for the hour between when they arrive in India to when Indy wakes up from the nightmare.
Bear in mind, this is not a critique of ToD. It's actually my favorite of the trilogy, and it's partly BECAUSE of the slower pace.

Maybe. All I know is Raiders and Crusade feel like one action set piece after another for the entire movie. It worked well for me when I was 10. I'm just not into it anymore.
TOD was my fav Indiana Jones film. I feel like the ending is by far the most heartfelt of all the films.
Greatest line of all of Indy’s dialogue was when once out of danger Willie said, “Indy let’s get out of here!”
And Indy says, “Right…ALL of us!”
To me seeing this in the theatre as a 12 year old knowing he wasn’t leaving without the kids made him a superhero in my eyes!
That moment with the soundtrack is so good!
Because it's the most action packed, ballsy, edgy, adventurous and violent entry. Did I mention John Williams' best work? Temple of Doom is the greatest Jones by far.

I don't know about most action packed compared to Raiders and Last Crusade. It's more of opening action scenes and climax action scenes, with an extended period of travel and mystery unraveling in between.
Williams worked bloody wonders.
That Parade of the Slave Children is REALLY something else.

It makes sense! In Raiders Belloq challenges Indy by sayng: "you and I aren't that different."
And well yes, Indy USED to be like Belloq. Temple shows that, being it a prequel to Raiders!
At the beginning of Temple Indy is indeed like Belloq, but after the ordeals of Temple he has become a more humble man and this carries on in Raiders. It might be the reason he didn't look at the Arc during it's opening, because he has been taught to respect the objects and idols he comes across and NEVER temper with them!
I'd say he has completed his arc completely in Crusade, which elaborates even more on this aspect. It is the very reason Indy was able to pass the 1st test, the Breath of God. (the penitent man will pass, the penitent man is humble).
Aside from the weird fact that all religions in the Indyverse are apparently correct :0 Indy went from a gold hungry adventurer to a respectfull man who has found a new admiration for his job.

There was a time when I didn't know this was supposed to be the worst of the series. I always liked it best.
Rough & tumble action adventure, exotic locales, evil cults, magic stones, fun sidekick. It's great.
This was so thorough. Thanks. Plan on watching this tonight. Watched Raiders last night and I haven’t seen Temple of Doom in years. I had no clue about the behind the scenes drama that prompted the flick, but it was fascinating. Great video.

One of the things that I love about Temple of Doom is the bridge scene. It shows Indy's ingenuity in the face of being effectively cornered and outnumbered. He never gives up and when his back is against the wall that's when he's most dangerous.
Raiders is my fave with the witty, highly quotable dialogue and an excellent intro to our main charater, not to mention an awesome extended bar fight! That being said, Temple of Doom is my close second with its' very Bond-esque opening (right down to the tuxedo); it's also got the mining carts, the bridge scene and Mola Ram is an amazing villian!!! When the movie came out Temple of Doom had a really fun arcade game which ultized its' score big time, I played it all the time. People only started throwing unnecessary shade at Temple of Doom after Last Crusade came out, then that shade was lifted and redistributed (this time more accurately imo) to Crystal Skull.
Thank you for this, I remember watching it for the first time, the trilogy was on 3 Sunday's back to back, I was about 8. I loved each one but the scene in Temple, where the March of the slave children plays and Indiana is stood about to beat the shit out of the thuggee guards for hurting the child always stood out. It summaries the character in that one scene, about how he may chase after all these treasures but at the end of the day he values other people's lives over them showing his heart of gold in the end.
Plus I love the chemistry between Willie and Indy, just hilarious to watch, in my opinion the best chemistry out of the 3 female leads in the trilogy. Nice vid my friend 👍
I’ve been conflicted for a while because for some strange reason after all my Indiana Jones rewatches, Temple of Doom began to stand out as my favorite. And I could never quite understand why… until now. I think you perfectly encapsulated what made this film so special, really superb video. Thank you so much for this!

I remember walking out the cinema as a 10 yr old kid after this movie, absolutely mind blown how brilliant it was & I got totally immersed in the story. I love all the Indy films & this one had it's own unique feel.

Temple of Doom has always been my favourite Indy adventure too. Raiders and Crusade are undoubtedly great, but as you perfectly described, Temple has everything and is by faaaar, the most successful at recreating the serials that so heavily influenced Lucas. A perfect mix of fun, genuine threat and pure unadulterated adventure, (and the best Indy musical score too, IMO). It was also the last film I saw at the cinema with my mum, before I started going with friends!
People have a problem with the movies getting darker and stranger

Yeah I’ve noticed with sequels that get darker and take more risks people tend to be offput by them because they go too far...for us it’s why we love em. It’s why they’re brilliant! Batman Returns is the best non Nolan Batman film by far.

The same thing happened with DooM 3. I personally think it's one of the best titles in the series, but people don't like it because it's darker, more horror themed and less like the originals, or even the “Reboot” titles.
This video definitely just solidified Temple of Doom as my favorite Indy movie

It's one of my fave/most rewatchable movies I know, Indiana Jones fits so well with a horror esc genre.

Great video! Temple of Doom has always been my favorite Indy film without a doubt. I think I’ve always been attracted to its darker, almost Horror movie elements….the Temple of Doom itself is just one hell of a set and I very clearly remember re-enacting key scenes from this film when I was a kid on the playground! Hell, EVERY time I see a suspension bridge, I still get excited and wanna go play on it…even as a 40yr old now! 😂
Bravo! I grew up with Temple of Doom. It's the one they always showed on HBO. I just saw Raiders for the first time a couple of years ago. It's good but Temple is great! Thanks for showing it some love!

i only putted Last Crusade a tidy bit higher due to Sean Connery and also the end scene with that old man drinking from the Holy Grale. but for the most part Last Crusade and Temple of Doom are as equally good. Raiders at third place. as for Crystal Skull, i only seen that movie once and forgot most of it, even though i vaguelly know the weird un'IndianaJones like Ending. lol.i cant say bad things about it if its too long ago.
Raiders is the first Indiana movie but Temple of Doom was so dark and i loved it. as wel as Last Crusade due to Connery and the Holy Grale scene. and yeah, Temple of Doom is badass!

This was an absolute joy to watch, thank you!! Temple of Doom is my absolute favourite of the Indy films (also possibly because it was the first one I ever saw, so had no pre-conceived notions of what to expect!). And god, thank you for mentioning the dinner at Pankot Palace, how it wasn't intended as anything racial or controversial to the Indian culture - no, those specific people at the palace were part of the cult. That fact often goes right over some people's heads!
He's right, though. The creative choices Lucas made with this sequel to a franchise starter is what makes Temple of Doom so unique. I nearly applauded when Griffin compared this to something safe and marketable like The Force Awakens.

this was such an truly amazing Essay video, this honestly made me appreciate Temple Of Doom a lot more, i have always liked the film but this made me understand it a ton more, the film would still rank third with Crystal Skull being the least favorite (i actually kinda like the film) and with Last Crusade being second and Raiders still being my favorite (it's more from how much i've seen it and that i've grown up with it) but again this video made me appreciate Temple Of Doom a lot more, you always deliver in very insightful film reviews and discussions, i've always loved your content since i found it in 2017 and i'll always support it even when you have an million subscribers which i know your channel definitely will :)

It’s the best because it’s the only one of the first three that doesn’t have the boringly unoriginal “evil nazis” as the villains. The bad guys were actually interesting and Satanic cults that kidnap children are actually a real threat that exists today which is another reason that makes it so good and bone chilling. There was some creativity and originality in this one as opposed to the boringly overdone nazis are bad theme.the Italian mob and German nazis are so repetitively used as villains in Hollywood movies it gets old. It will Be another million years before a movie like temple of doom comes out.

I was exposed to these films at such a young age, I never even saw anything different about this movie compared to Raiders and The Last Crusade. But it’s always been my favorite for some reason
Can't fault this. As a 14 year-year-old Brit, I visited family the US in 1984 and watched this at a mall in NY State. It blew my mind, and still reminds me of an utterly happy time. This movie will always remain the most exciting and enjoyable thing I have ever seen in a cinema. Ghostbusters Second.
The setting of the intro in wild and wealthy but lawlessness of 1930’s Shanghai was really inspiring and captured me for the rest of this movie.
Not sure this is the BEST Indiana Jones movie but it's definitely very memorable and fun to watch. I also love the music in this. And Ford looks so strong, in shape, perhaps never more than he is here.

That is deep analysis. The freeing of the slaves and one of the happiest movie ending of all time are my main reasons why this film is brillant. Plus shortround is fantastic.
Temple of Doom is a very strong sequel. Everyone has a soft spot for Last Crusade but I think Crusade is actually the weaker of the two. TOD is a quintessential, action-packed and daring Indy movie 👍

Good video. I've had a variable relationship with the movie all my life, from loving it intensely to being embarrassed by it. You made some very interesting observations with which I'll go an rewatch it!
Has always been my favorite one as well. I love that it's dark and gritty. Many think TOO dark, but pulling out hearts fits in pretty nicely with exploding heads and melting faces, imo. There really isn't a dull moment, especially at the end. I get the criticism the 4th film gets, but T.O.D is a GEM 💎
Raiders is simply my favorite movie of all time. Temple of doom has always been underrated, with Last Crusade being a bit overrated.
Agreed, for many years I wanted to say that Last Crusade was my favorite but I kept coming back to Temple... I saw Temple in the theater opening weekend, I was 7 at the time and it changed everything for me, Temple was the first Jones film I had saw - this was back in the day when VHS machines and movie rental were coming about but I didn't see Raiders until approximately 1987, after we got our first VHS machine - Great video!

Personally Temple of Doom is my favorite Indiana Jones movie. I like the best moments such as Indy fighting Mola Ram and the thuggee cult and the mine car chase. The thuggee cult are really frightening villains. I still love all of the Indiana Jones movies
Agree with you. Temple of Doom and Raiders are my favorite (I love Karen Allen's Marion) depending on what mood I'm in on a particular day, Last Crusade is next (something is missing) then Crystal Skull (a lot is missing).

Maybe I just have nostalgia since this movie seemed to play in my childhood home once a week... but this was always my favorite Indy film and got reenacted a thousand times between my brother and me. I loved the humor, the fun pacing, and even the darker aspects.

When Raiders came out I was a tad too young to appreciate it, only watching it on VHS. When Temple of Doom came out I think I was exactly the right age. I remember loving it and wanting to see it multiple times. I especially enjoyed the fact that my parents hated the gross parts.
I’m in my late 40’s. I was surprised that when the internet age came upon us and we all could discuss our opinions about movies that people disliked Temple of Doom. I grew up loving this movie!! Same could be said about Return of the Jedi and Predator 2!! I love these movies!!!
