Absolutely love this tutorial! I'm a beginner but your tutorials are truly helpful! The only thing I am struggling with is finding that specific yarn or one close to it. Is there one you suggest that is similar to this?
When I made this video I didn’t think it would be hard to find that yarn. But unfortunately I can’t find it as well now. Since then they have come up with lots of colours of macrame cord. That works even better. Here’s an Amazon link for you. amzn.to/3MDor2P
This is beautiful! I want to make it using single-twist cotton cord. Would I need longer strands? Any advice? I'm very new to macrame. Thanks for the tutorial!
A single twist cotton cord may be thinner than what I used. If that’s the case than you don’t need to cut your lengths longer but your final piece may be shorter and more narrow. The cotton yarn I used is about a 3mm in comparison to macrame cord.
I’m guessing 5mm cord is a bit heavier than what I used. If you are worried about it and don’t mind wasting a bit of cord than just cut your lengths about 2 ft longer (61cm) longer. This piece has a longer fringe so that will help as well.
I absolutely love this. You have made it so easy to follow however I'm having hard time finding this type of yarn. I didn't find it Michael's or JOAN. Any substitutions?
Unfortunately after I published this video I could not find this cotton yarn in the heavy weight as well. So disappointing. It works up beautifully. I have seen coloured macrame cord on Amazon. You could give that a try.
I have the pattern set up with 3 triangles at the top. If you only wanted it half the width you would have to change the pattern so difficult to tell you how many cords of each colour. I would say if you want it not as wide then just make 2 triangles at the top and you can choose the colours of cords that you like.
Thanks Christina for the really nice comment. I do get asked this question and it is so hard to remember to time my projects. I design as I go on most projects as well as filming, editing and creating the project at the same time so it’s hard to time it. But as a guesstimate I would say at least 6 to 8 hrs.
It’s always difficult for me to time my projects as I am organizing how I am going to present the video at the same time. Also filming, editing and designing as I go. As a guesstimate I will say it might take you between 6 - 10 hours.
Translation: It was very beautiful and for me that I have not done macramé I think it is easy. Thank you for teaching us. Your very welcome! ¡Eres muy bienvenido!

the bernat chunky seems to be about the size of a 5 mm macrame cord.........and i also am not sure i saw a length by width measurement can you help? this is beautiful
Where did you buy your wool? Being you are measuring in meters, are you in Canada? I can't find the same packaging online. Will check michels today. Love this piece. It's beautiful!
Thanks Linda. It's 100% cotton. I am in Canada and although I measure in meters I am more comfortable with yards. I try to add both to my instructions. I did buy it from Michaels Craft store in Canada. I know others had a hard time finding it so you might have to substitute for another Chunky bulky yarn. I loved the colors and love working with cotton as it doesn't stretch like yarn and the knots are more defined. So hope you can find it as it works really well.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts I found the wool at yarnspirations bernat handicrafter cotton but they did not have 5 bulky the one I ordered is 4 medium. It is 400/14oz. Hope this works.
I was excited when I found the bulky Bernat cotton yarn. So made a video with it. Unfortunately, I have not seen it since. But they now make macrame cord in lots of fun colours. I would try that. The 4 weight will be too thin. Sorry. It will make a very narrow hanging.
I cannot find this Bernat product anywhere! Please provide an alternate material suggestion? I searched the Bernat site, Michaels, Hobby Lobby, no luck. I purchased another Bernat yarn/string from WalMart, but it is too light . I am a new macrame lover and don't know where to turn. Thanks, Patti! Tracy
Hi Tracy,When I found this Bernat 100% cotton bulky yarn I was in heaven because I knew it would work up beautifully and it did. I did buy it from my local Michael's Craft store and since then I have not seen it. So frustrating as I didn't think it would be a problem for my viewers to find. I'm so sorry about that. In order to get the right thickness you could use the basic the Bernat cotton yarn that a lot of us use for making dishcloths. It is made up of 4 strands. The bulky Bernat that I used has 12 strands to form the yarn. You could use the basic Bernat cotton yarn but you would have to use 3 strands to make it thick enough. It might be confusing if you are just learning macrame as you will have a lot of cords to work with. But that would work. Other than that you could use just basic macrame cord in a 3mm thickness. But you might not find the color you want. You could dye it the color you want though. Here are some close colors that might work for you. Here is a link to natural 3mm macrame cord amzn.to/2LX7eFd Here is a link to lake blue n3mm macrame cord amzn.to/2vhBBwo Here is a link to grey 3mm macrame cord amzn.to/2vl9cWd
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts So what is better 3mm or 4mm? I know it will make a difference in the length to cut won't it? I was just about to order 4mm but is 3mm better?
The 3mm will work great and I was able to find the very similar colours. Those are the links I provided you in the past comment. 4mm is even thicker so yes it will use up more cord length.
I just purchased 3 colors measuring 3mm by 100 m. Do you think it's enough. Doing the calculations I think I need 112 meters for two of the colors and I will only get about 100. Is the fact that it is 3mm give me enough length for the project. Thank you.
Everyone will tie their knots a bit different even if you are following the pattern. I tend to over estimate on the amount needed so there is enough. The thinner cord will definitely give you more length. Maybe when you cut your strands cut them 1/2 a meter shorter and then watch your lengths as you do your project. If it looks like your going to run out then shorten up the pattern or make your fringe shorter. This will be your special art work and it doesn’t have to be exactly like mine. It will still be beautiful. Just make it work with what you have.
I have a question.. it's probably stupid but I can't figure out what you mean about the length of the yarn... You said each should be 7 meters. And you'll need 16, 16, and 14.... What exactly? 16 7 Meyer strands? Etc? And then those get doubles as they're tied on to the dowel? I'm sorry, I'm so confused 🤯 but I really want to make this! Please help!
No worries. This is what you need to do. Choose 3 different colours of cotton yarn or macrame cord. I choose white grey and blue. You are going to cut 16 lengths of white at 7 metres long and cut 16 lengths of grey at 7 metres long and cut 12 lengths of blue at 7 meters long. Each of these cord lengths will be folded in half and then added to your driftwood with a larks head knot. Now each side of your cords will be about 3.5 metres long. Hope that makes sense for you now.
I'm really going to have to start timing my projects as I do get asked this question. Because I am designing as I go and filming and editing all at the same time it's difficult to time myself. As a guesstimate I would say 6-8 hrs
Patti, thanks a lot for your video, I love! I'm French, I'm a beginner and I do not know where to find the cottons that you use for your project. In france the wall hanging is not too common ..... I went to the site "michael'store" but I do not find the same products you use and that have seduce me! If these products no longer exist can you indicate me the equivalence? Especially the size of the cotton ropes and also this beautiful turquoise ... Once again congratulations
Hi Monique Thank you for your lovely comment! Yes, sometimes it is difficult to find the exact same yarn or cotton. But that is ok. You can use what you can find in your country. Look for a bulky #5 yarn. Try to find a yarn or cotton that does not have much stretch to it. This will help to make better shaped knots. You will need about 124 yards (113 metres) in white or your colour of choice 124 yards (113 metres) in gray or your colour of choice 85 yards (78 metres) in robins blue or your colour of choice Hope you can find yarn that you like!
Crafty Patti Hello Patti I thank you for your answer but I only find that cotton # 4 of the brand Bernat. Is that enough? I found another brand "run the cord" but what to choose: 3 millimeters or 6? Desolee to derange you again, I am beginner so I need to be advised by a pro. I watch all your video on you tube and I admire your work is really very pretty what you do and thank you for letting us enjoy this. thank you
Hi, The yarn I used is very bulky. The Bernat basic cotton in the medium 4 is a lot thinner. First option: If you want to use the Bernat #4 medium then your wall hanging will have the same design but will be much shorter and not very wide. Second option: Use the Bernat 4 medium and double up on your strands. So in 1 grouping of four you would have 8 strands instead of 4 and you would treat 2 strands as one. This will make your wall hanging wider and longer but not as wide and long as mine still but totally doable. Third option: Try and find a bulky #5 yarn with not to much stretch. The blue is called robins egg blue and is one of my fabric colors. Reminds me off the tropics!
If you want to use the "run by the cord" the 3mm will work good. I used a 3mm macrame cord on another one of my macrame videos. Here's the link if you want to see how a 3mm cord looks and it's also a beginner video. Video is called, Macrame Wall Decor - step by step tutorial for beginners. ruclips.net/video/r-j0d7p9ZFY/видео.html
Thank you very much for your answer . I have searched on the internet all sites that could propose this cotton (bulky 5) but nothing! Or not the colors of your realization that I like so much I finds # 6 but not # 5 or Bernât home déc Yarn Is it the same ? Once again Patti thank you for giving me your time
You can use any yarn as long as it is similar in size. A bulky yarn is needed. I haven't seen your yarn but if you think it is thinner than mine than you wont use as much yarn but to be on the safe side cut them the same length as mine which was 7 meters or 7.55 yards. If your yarn is much wider than mine than allow more length.
The 5mm cord is very close to the cotton yarn I used so your lengths will be fine. If you are concerned you can always make them 2 ft (61cm) longer for safe measure.
I WOULD LOVE TO MAKE THIS BUT I CAN'T FINE THE GREY, CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT WEB SITE , I HAVE THE WHITE AND THE BLUE BUT NOT THE GREY YET. I AM NOT HAVING ANY LUCK, HELP!!!!
I originally found this cotton bulky yarn at Michaels. Now they don’t sell it any more which is very disappointing. You can try finding macrame cord in different colours on Amazon. Here’s some links and see if you can find a color you like. Here is a link to natural 3mm macrame cord amzn.to/2LX7eFd Here is a link to lake blue n3mm macrame cord amzn.to/2vhBBwo Here is a link to grey 3mm macrame cord amzn.to/2vl9cWd
I live in an area that has many beaches so I am able to find driftwood easily. If you don’t live by a beach then you can look for tree branch. And 3rd option is to use a piece of wood dowel that you can buy from craft stores or a lumber store. I originally bought my yarn from Michaels craft store using my 50% off coupons. I am sad to say that they do no sell this yarn anymore. Very disappointing. Cotton yarn is preferable as there is very little stretch. If you can’t find any than you can find 3mm macrame cord in different colours on the internet.
I know. So disappointing. It was the perfect weight and came in a few soft colours. Others have asked the same question so I decided to publish a video on “how to dye macrame cord and rope”. Here’s the link if you want to give that a try. Many colours to choose from. ruclips.net/video/Pvovf4qlLKI/видео.html Now that Macrame is so popular again you can also try looking on Amazon as they make macrame cord in more colours now. Any cord in a 3m or 4m weight will work just fine.
So many options! Do you want your curtain just for an accent to be decorative or do you want it to be so you can’t see through it. This will determine if you want an open pattern or a very tight pattern. It’s also pretty to just have a few inch’s along the top and then have it longer on just the sides. I would use a thinner cording if you want it to have a lacy feel too it. At this point in time I don’t have a tutorial on a macrame curtain but maybe in the future.
Crafty Patti thanks a lot for your valuable reply ...I want curtain through which we can't see... If u have any design pls help me... Should I give u pic of that window?😙😄
All of my macrame hangings I design as I go so I don't have actual designs written down for others to follow. You have to watch my videos. I don't do design work for clients. I live a very busy life and my business takes up a lot of my hours. I can only give you suggestions: -Make 2 hangings. 1 for each side so you are able to open the curtain if you want the light to come in. -You can look in my playlist called "How to do Macrame Knots: Here is the link: ruclips.net/p/PLp6o7Vy1aS_WH4-B16zJhvT4dyebf5366 This will give you some ideas of different knots and different designs for your curtain. - Choose a 2mm size cord or smaller so your curtain has some movement and is not to stiff looking. -Here's an idea for you: For an easy curtain you could do alternating square knots which looks very pretty and it would be effective. Add as many cord lengths as you think you might need to cover the whole window. Cut each cord length 6 times the final length that you want. Hope that helps.
All information is in the video on how many strands/strings. But this is what I used. 16 white, 16 grey and 12 blue. Each of these strands was cut at 7 metres (7.66 yards)
I’m sad because I didn’t watch the part where you told us the length of the cord and now I’m left with a sad looking one... 😭 I made a strand 60 inches.... 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
A number 4 cotton is not as thick as what I used in this video. You could try and double up on the number 4 or use a different bulky yarn of your choice.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts I tried a little with the 4 cotton and it was really hard to keep the strands from twisting so I gave up on it. I'll give it a go with the 4mm cord.

Hi Carrie. Yes you are correct. It is a half square knot and in this video I did slip up and say square knot. I know what it is but sometimes on videos I say something stupid. I didn't catch this when editing. So thank you for catching it. I've enjoyed working with macrame since the 1970's and excited that it has come back. @@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts So if I use 5mm cotton rope...?
I’m guessing 5mm cord is a bit heavier than what I used. If you are worried about it and don’t mind wasting a bit of cord than just cut your lengths about 2 ft longer (61cm) longer. This piece has a longer fringe so that will help as well.

I would say if you want it not as wide then just make 2 triangles at the top and you can choose the colours of cords that you like.
Absolutely Beautiful! I will definitely be making this. How long did this take you to do? You are a great teacher.
Thanks Christina for the really nice comment. I do get asked this question and it is so hard to remember to time my projects. I design as I go on most projects as well as filming, editing and creating the project at the same time so it’s hard to time it. But as a guesstimate I would say at least 6 to 8 hrs.
I am curious how long did this take you to complete from start to finish? It is very in-depth and very beautiful!
It’s always difficult for me to time my projects as I am organizing how I am going to present the video at the same time. Also filming, editing and designing as I go.
As a guesstimate I will say it might take you between 6 - 10 hours.
I like it!!!Tanks for sharing!!
Quedó muy bonito y para mi que no e hecho macrame creo que es facil. Gracias por enseñarnos
Translation: It was very beautiful and for me that I have not done macramé I think it is easy. Thank you for teaching us. Your very welcome! ¡Eres muy bienvenido!

So beautiful 💜
the bernat chunky seems to be about the size of a 5 mm macrame cord.........and i also am not sure i saw a length by width measurement can you help? this is beautiful
Yes. 5mm macrame cord will work great. 5mm macrame cord is about 3/16 of an inch (.5cm) in width.
Fantastic. I like very much. Saludos from Spain
Glad you like it!
Muito bom esse modo de fazer ! Amei ❤

Just learning, thanks for your video..
Your very welcome! Enjoy learning how to macrame!
Thanks for getting back to me! I lucked out and found it at michaels AND it was on sale!!! So excited!
What is the acctual finished length of this project?
Measuring from the drift wood to the longest part of the fringe measures 42” (1.07m) long.
Muy hermosísimo trabajo. Me encantó

Crafty Patti I never thought of the dishcloth yarn, great idea.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts Thank you for your quick response and your advise.
Hope that makes sense for you now.
beautiful!! how long did it take from start to finish?
Hi Monique
Thank you for your lovely comment!
Yes, sometimes it is difficult to find the exact same yarn or cotton. But that is ok. You can use what you can find in your country. Look for a bulky #5 yarn. Try to find a yarn or cotton that does not have much stretch to it. This will help to make better shaped knots.
You will need about
124 yards (113 metres) in white or your colour of choice
124 yards (113 metres) in gray or your colour of choice
85 yards (78 metres) in robins blue or your colour of choice
Hope you can find yarn that you like!
Crafty Patti Hello Patti
I thank you for your answer but I only find that cotton # 4 of the brand Bernat. Is that enough?
I found another brand "run the cord" but what to choose: 3 millimeters or 6?
Desolee to derange you again, I am beginner so I need to be advised by a pro.
I watch all your video on you tube and I admire your work is really very pretty what you do and thank you for letting us enjoy this.
thank you
Hi,
The yarn I used is very bulky.

Thank you very much for your answer .
I have searched on the internet all sites that could propose this cotton (bulky 5) but nothing! Or not the colors of your realization that I like so much
I finds # 6 but not # 5 or Bernât home déc Yarn Is it the same ?
Once again Patti thank you for giving me your time

Can i uses 100% acrylic yarn its thiner I'm a beginner an i really want to make this as a gift. An how long of a length do i cut.
Am I able to make this shorter but have all the same designs in it?
You can shorten up parts of the design for sure. And you don’t need to have the same length fringe.
if i use a 5mm macrame cord would the length of each cord change?
Here is a link to natural 3mm macrame cord amzn.to/2LX7eFd
Here is a link to lake blue n3mm macrame cord amzn.to/2vhBBwo
Here is a link to grey 3mm macrame cord amzn.to/2vl9cWd
what mm cord could I use to do this as I can't find the bernat yarn you used?
Any 4mm cord will work fine.
Look online at yarnspirations.com
How long was this finished piece and what was the length of rope did you cut?
The finished length including driftwood and fringe is 42” long ( 1.7 metres). I cut my cord lengths at 7.66 yds (7 metres)
Where do you get the wood from and a reasonable place to buy yarn? Thanks
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts Thank you! Unfortunately I live nowhere near a beach, but was wondering about the Birch Wood I think that's what it's called.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts Thank you! Unfortunately I live nowhere near a beach, but was wondering about the Birch Wood I think that's what it's called.
It really doesn’t matter what type of tree branch or wood you use. As long as you like it and it’s long enough for your hanging.
Bernat Handicrafter Chunky 100% cotton is no longer available, do you have any substitutions suggestions?
I know. So disappointing. It was the perfect weight and came in a few soft colours.
Others have asked the same question so I decided to publish a video on “how to dye macrame cord and rope”. Here’s the link if you want to give that a try. Many colours to choose from. ruclips.net/video/Pvovf4qlLKI/видео.html
Now that Macrame is so popular again you can also try looking on Amazon as they make macrame cord in more colours now. Any cord in a 3m or 4m weight will work just fine.
Hi can u suggest something for my kitchen window....I m thinking to make macrame curtain.... What do u say? Can u help me??
I can only give you suggestions:
-Make 2 hangings. 1 for each side so you are able to open the curtain if you want the light to come in.
-You can look in my playlist called "How to do Macrame Knots: Here is the link: ruclips.net/p/PLp6o7Vy1aS_WH4-B16zJhvT4dyebf5366
This will give you some ideas of different knots and different designs for your curtain.
- Choose a 2mm size cord or smaller so your curtain has some movement and is not to stiff looking.
-Here's an idea for you:
For an easy curtain you could do alternating square knots which looks very pretty and it would be effective. Add as many cord lengths as you think you might need to cover the whole window. Cut each cord length 6 times the final length that you want.
Hope that helps.
Thanks a lot.... Very useful n helpful you are.... I m doctor so I also stay busy but I love to do crafts n all ....
Wishing you success with your macrame curtain!
Does it matter which way the loop of the larks head knot goes?
Not really. Just depends if you want the loop that forms across the knot to show on the front or have it in the back. I like it to show on the front.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts thank you
Easy to understand 😊🙂🙂
Thanks for all your lovely comments!
Lovely
Just to clarify, each cord should be 7 meters, correct?
Yes, you are correct. Cut each strand 7 meters long.
A great tutorial, thank you for sharing
Would u know about how many strings .because i would not know
All information is in the video on how many strands/strings. But this is what I used.
16 white, 16 grey and 12 blue. Each of these strands was cut at 7 metres (7.66 yards)
Patti, what is the finished length of this hanging? Jan
From the driftwood to the longest part of the fringe is 42" or 107cm long.
I’m sad because I didn’t watch the part where you told us the length of the cord and now I’m left with a sad looking one... 😭 I made a strand 60 inches.... 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Oh dear! Well now that you know, you can make another one that will be longer.
can I use a number 4 cotton?
A number 4 cotton is not as thick as what I used in this video. You could try and double up on the number 4 or use a different bulky yarn of your choice.
@@CraftyPattiArtsCrafts I tried a little with the 4 cotton and it was really hard to keep the strands from twisting so I gave up on it. I'll give it a go with the 4mm cord.

@12:50 that's a half square knot
Hi Carrie. Yes you are correct. It is a half square knot and in this video I did slip up and say square knot. I know what it is but sometimes on videos I say something stupid. I didn't catch this when editing. So thank you for catching it. I've enjoyed working with macrame since the 1970's and excited that it has come back. PS I probably shouldn't make videos with head colds when I'm not thinking clear.
