Thank you Jordan for highlighting this sad story. So glad you made the decision to visit this gravesite. An informative and important vlog. R.I.P. Otto Warmbier.
I remember this lads story , it’s such a sad one. Thank you ,for bringing this to us ,our kids don’t understand things are different in foreign lands. Prison system is totally different as well.
There was no real way for him to learn anything much about their system, there was no foreign travel advice against going except some infection going around. No one has been convicted off unclear CCTV before. They had never told such a ridiculous story before, they made him say the US government sent him to take a poster, how stupid of a notion is that? It took this to happen for the world to know properly that you could be falsely accused.
I remember when all of that happened. It's tragic what happened to him over a poor choice that he made. I don't know why anyone would want to visit North Korea with an insane ruler.
It's insane to me how we invaded and obliterated Germany for human rights violations, yet NK is allowed to commit heinous acts. Starving people there actually eat human flesh to survive while operations are sometimes performed without anesthesia. Rats devour the discarded body parts behind the hospitals. Also insane is Churchill telling British radio stations not to report on atrocities committed by the Soviet Red Army in Eastern Europe right before the Allies _handed_ Eastern Europe over to Stalin... If they were trying so hard to _save_ Europe from Germany, why did they hand half of it over to the communists?!?!!!
Thanks Jordan this is so sad about this young man. I remember this and can't imagine the horrible time his parents went through. Especially getting him back in that condition.
I remember when this happened, it is so tragic, that poor young man. I wish all of the young people would pay attention to what is happening in North Korea and other dangerous places. My heart broke for Otto's family and having to live through the terror of what was happening to their loved one. Thank you for visiting his grave and sharing it with us. RIP Otto Warmbier, my heart hurts for him and his loved ones.
I followed this at the time, including that hearing they televised. This is one of the saddest, and scariest, cases I have ever heard. The story they gave of what happened to him at the prison he was sent to is completely cockamamie.
I remember this story & it breaks my heart to this day. Such a tragedy. He was so sick when he was released & you knew he was going to pass away. It was so sad for his parents. Makes you realize how blessed we are to live in the USA & have the freedoms that we have here. You have a great friend in Eric who shared his advice with you about international travel. What he's talking about happened to a friend of mine who accidentally had something in a jeans pocket in her suitcase and she didnt realize it was there or that it would become such a huge problem. She was put in prison in Africa and wasn't told why for a few days. She loved to travel but once she got home she never traveled outside the US again. It changed her forever. Great vlog Jordon in honor of Otto & his family. 💙
I don't like to victim shame but it's hard not to in this situation. Everyone has been warned about how dangerous North Korea is. This is what North Korea does.
In the video you can’t see his face(besides a random still of him in literally different clothes) nor is the build of the guy really even that similar to Otto’s. Adding the fact that he was supposed to be hammered and in the video the guy is very carefully taking the poster and setting it down. I read somewhere that some other people on the tour say that they were out celebrating new years when this should have happened. And his roommate strongly opposes the thought that Otto would have done something like this. All of this combined with a clearly scripted apology painted towards American slander and the fact that he wasn’t even worried when he was taken away… it really isn’t difficult to see what was really going on
Agreed, i definitely believe they made an example out of him...like they were literally watching and waiting for an American to break their laws. I can only imagine the Rocket man literally salivating at the thought of torturing an American.
@@cindyrussell1581 um no. America and Canada do not try to create international incidents - by purposely targeting and torturing/killing young innocent tourists. Especially for seeking publicity or attention.
Oh how devastating for parents. That poor young man made a very Bad Mistake, but to go through the unthinkable as he did is so cruel and unbearable. How he lived the rest of his live was Devastating For Him and His Family & Very Close Friends. God Bless Otto’s Soul and May He Rest In Peace.
It’s unbelievable lots of people believe he actually did stole the poster. There is no evidence and that unclear footage doesn’t even looks like a build of him
Thank you for doing this vlog. I pray his soul is at peace. Thank you for reminding us of him and his life. Thank you for the kindness and sensitivity, the vlog was very informative, I hadn't known about what the "crime" was. Prayers to him and his family and friends.
Sad story 😢 Rest in peace Otto hope u are at peace now , while watching his documentary, that moment he cried in front of judges asking for forgiveness it really made me cry
Thata crazy the timing i see this , i went to wayne highschool then moved , we went to the same hs , i know your from troy so you should know huber heights
Such a tragic crime against this young man, broke my heart. Thank you for covering his story, Jordan. RIP Otto. To any young people who might not understand how important democracy is, this is how important it is. We take it for granted in our free countries. In dictatorships and totalitarian governments like North Korea you can have this happen to you for touching a poster. Although don't get me wrong, they don't know if he even wound up on the wrong hotel floor or touched a poster at all, probably didn't. He was there with an organized group and was just enjoying the trip. But even if he had it's obviously no excuse for what happened to him. Don't go to dangerous countries if you can avoid it.
I remember seeing him being wheeled out the airplane or ambulance and it was so shocking. It’s definitely a deterrent to go to places like that. Those places, you have to take them seriously bc they take them seriously.
I do not understand why anyone visits North Korea. It's a vicious oppressive police state. Visters never experience the real culture or meet its people. They go on a guided tour. Basically a carefully choreographed play that is put on to fool outsiders. The money that tourists spend there doesn't help the citizens. It goes directly to the dictator.
It's sad but, a vast majority of Americans think that we can go to another country and play the games that they think are cool and funny ~ wind up paying a price. You are in THEIR country not ours 🤐
I suggest looking into the fact there’s no way you can enter the fifth floor 🤔 isn’t that interesting…also you can’t tell who the person was in camera…
This is incredibly sad. The dictator who runs that country is utterly disgusting, deserves NONE of our money through tourist revenue and no free person should EVER step foot in that crap hole.
heard about, it is sad, very sad. as much as I'd love to travel over the pond, nope I'd rather travel here in the US of A. thank you very much.. take care Jordan.
If you know this story in its entirety he DID NOT steal the poster you can see the video the silhouette is literally unrecognisable and isn’t even the same build, he was then coerced on to saying he did it, which considering there were cameras outside his room he’d entered to sleep and he never came out of it, this is North Korea for you. Also his brain injury that led to his death was cause by lack of oxygen to his brain for around 20 minutes in other words no one helped and this led to massive brain injury. No ones quite sure how he came to be in this position but seeing as its a North Korean prison it’s not hard to imagine.
Yeah I was never fully convinced he did it. Yeah possible, but it's just as likely the government pulled this stunt for some political reason that in the end, didn't end up being successful. Maybe to start a war somehow, but backed out of it because of something said from US officials.
Not sure he even did steal it, you see a still which is definitely him but then the poster being took down is just a shadowy figure. Then if you listen to the press conference, the full version (search on here: Otto Warmbier press conference full and it comes up) he says "I packed my shoes, the best for sneaking" which is not really something an American would say - that statement was written for him by someone who knows English but it's not their first language - a North Korean.
I was watching another video about this with a high ranking north Korean defector talking about poisons that are virtually undetectable and he believes that's what was done to him because it wouldn't show up in a autopsy or a toxicology report. He said North Korea is extremely advanced in this.
Such a sad story. I am so curious about why his parents acted the way they did by refusing an autopsy. The report was a coroner’s report, which means an external exam. The parents are ferociously fighting against NKorea, I wonder if they regret their choice to insist that an autopsy not be done.
I remember when this happened and genuinely thought he made a foolish decision to try and steal a poster. But looking back I do think he was set up. He was forced to lie and make fake tears in a speech that didn’t even have western dialect.
I'd never visit a socialist country, not North Korea, Venezuela, Russia, China. You never know what can happen to you in those places. PS: you can get botulism from canned food and homemade preserved foods. One of the reasons you should never buy homemade jams or marmalades or pickles, etc. from foodies. Only buy preserved food that went through industrial canning processes or from gastronomy professionals. Botulism causes paralysis and death. It can be cured if it's treated urgently.
This story breaks my heart in half.......this poor kid. WHY??? Why go to N Korea on a vacation???? Its insane!!!! That travel agency influenced those kids!
The sitting President, of course, gave a stern warning to Kim not to allow anything like this to happen to another American. (Just kidding - he later traveled to the Korean peninsula and kissed Kim's butt and was photographed saluting the North Korean miltary commanders.)
This tragic! I remember it well. It’s unfathomable what torture the young man probably went through. I hope his family are ok. NK is such a terrible place. Not a place for a U.S. citizen to go period. Not worth the risk. Thanks Jordan for covering this. ~Love&Light♥️C.
Nobody will ever know what that poor guy went through. Yes, you need to obey laws, however, to end someone's life over it?? Completely sick and uncalled for. They didn't have any call to torture that poor boy
It’s really a horrific story and I feel even though I am sure North Korea is interesting, it’s not worth going there. Of course he should have known not to take anything like that, but the punishment was ridiculous.
