- This is a beautifully decorative wall hanging I made adorned with Lippan work with craft clay and art mirrors.
Material I used:
1. MDF Wooden Board panel
2. White Glue
3. Air Dry Clay
4. Plaster Of Paris (POP)
5. Water
6. Brush
7. Decorative Mirrors mosaic stones Square and Round
Mud and Mirror Work (also known as Lippan Kaam) is a traditional mural craft of Kutch, Gujarat, India.
Traditionally, these Sparkling murals was initially done by the village ladies to decorate the mud walls and keep the interiors of their home cool.
It was made by adding mud and camel dung. But now a days, a variety of mud from kutch along with clay and colors are used to make the lippan.
It takes hours for the clay and colors to dry.
Literal Definition
In the Gujarati language,
* Lipan = mud-washing
* Kaam = work

hey thanks a lot.... you can use POP but you need to use it in cone, make a paste of pop powder and white glue fill it in a plastic sheet cone and use it.

Thanks for you comment dear 😊 you can try Fevicryl Mouldit. Air dry clay shrinks when it drys. try making bigger shapes of clay than designs so when the clay will dry and shrinks it'll take the exact design's place or may be check reviews of the clay you buy. some clay doesn't shrinks after it dry.

you can buy mirrors in store named "Tedi" "Woolworth" "Euroshop" it'll come like mosaic sheet..😊
I use wrapping papers that I’d NEVER use, mostly stuff that I buy around Christmas here in Cyprus. I was planning on chopping up old CDs, but the paper is fantastic (so far). Thanks for the great video.

If you are making it today itself then you can use..as fabric colprs dry very soon...still recommend to use normal acrylic colors

Can it create cracks or bubbles on the board if it is not mixed properly??
some air hardening clay shrinks after dry but i didn't see any cracks.
What else can I apply on hardboard instead of plaster of paris paste? Any white paint?
reason i applied POP paste is to make the surface a bit rough so that it can hold the clay work easily. paint will be smooth and clay can slip on that. 🥰

Can we make this colourful?? If so then shoudl I add colours to the clay or paint them after shaping then to the board?
yes you can color it....but then you need to add some extra efforts to remove paint from mirror work...so i'll suggest to do all the clay work before and then color it and at last stick mirrors.

Hi Ekta Thanks for your comment....u can use talcum or baby powder for cone work, you need to mix white glue and powder and fill it in cone. but with this option it'll not give much 3d effect as clay or putty powder can give.
for mirrors, it's available online and in craft supply store. 🥰Hope it's helpful.

Does the modelling clay stick on sunmica???
i am not sure dear...sunmica is very slippery surface....you can try coating it with white cement and glue paste first and then try clay work, clay work needs rough surface.

it'll not work on glass ..you'll need a rough surface that can hold the clay work properly. 🥰

Hey I live in an industrial area so whatever I hang on my wall gets dirty in just some days. As this art is white in colour, how can I keep it clean ? It has such intricacies. Please reply
may be you can apply a coat of varnish or simply make a frame for the piece.

i used Normal Mirrors and some plastic mirrors.

Thanks for your comment, i mentioned the size of the board in video. Mirrors are around half a cm in size.

Can we try on tiles?
Hi Dolly, it was my first time i tried my hands on this art.... i have no idea if it'll wok on tile, you can first cover the tile with POP Paste as shown in the video so that the texture of the tile will become Lippan kaam friendly.

Yes it does with most of the air dry clay....you can try using mouldit clay 🥰

Yes you can 😊😊 make sure to apply base coat on wood before starting lippan kaam on it.
