    Very good explanation.
    I recently bought one to add in a bathroom, keeping the traditional ones, because we are expecting water shortage this summer and I think it weird to keep on peeing in drinkable water in such case.
    I have been using it for 10 dans.
    It's easy to use and to clean.
    There was no "too much details" in your explanation because we all wondered how to use it properly...
    I do not regret my purchase.
    I keep the classic toilets for people comming home, but only use the tiny separett myself.

    This is a great video! BTW, Separett offers a urine diverting drain plumbing system that eliminates the urine holding tank. This is useful for retrofitting RVs with a black water tank. The urine is then diverted to the black water tank. The black and gray water tanks can be plumbed together to increase time between needing to dump them.
    Off grid homesteads can install a gray water leach field in order to use the diversion plumbing.

    I'm not seeing how this solution is better than using an elderly potty chair with biodegradable liners and absorption pads. In both cases you don't have to look at your waste to get rid of it, and you still have to bin the waste bags. Although the potty chair solution requires a new liner for each user, it is overall far cheaper, more sanitary, requires less handling and has less impact on the environment.

    Hi. Thanks for a great review. We are just building an overland truck on a Mitsubishi 4x4 and trying to plan out the bathroom/ shower. I have been looking at the tiny for a while and had added it to my list of possibles for toilets but had a few things to ponder before making a final decision. Is yours fixed directly to your GRP fiberglass floor and if so how as I think it has 3 screw holes and also how about the venting. Does it smell as we would probably need to locate our vent pipe fairly close the habitation door. Anyway thanks for any advise offered. Of course now I am sat here watching all your other travel videos feeling inspired rather than getting on with design research. Its funny where a Sunday afternoon of toilet research takes you too !

    • @TheGapDecaders
      @TheGapDecaders  2 года назад +1

      Hi Julian thanks for the feedback. In terms of fixing, we have a marine ply sub floor to accommodate a shower tray and underfloor heating, so the toilet was fixed to that. Additionally it is screwed into marine ply with the two screws at the back. Regarding the venting, we core drilled through the floor and it comes out around 3m from the hab door. I can't say we've noticed any smell, but we don't always have the fan on (we fitted a rocker switch so we would turn it off) and don't tend to leave solid waste for too long before binning. Hope that helps, but ask away if you have any more questions :)

    • @julianwithers1256
      @julianwithers1256 2 года назад

      Hi Again.
      Thanks a lot for the reply. By what you say I am assuming then that you don't have the toilet sat in the shower tray.?
      I was also wondering what the internal dimensions of your habitation box are as it seems to be a bit of a tardis. It doesn't look long on the outside and yet seems long on the inside and really spacious. I am guessing it is quite tall which helps and also has lots of natural light.
      Loving the travel videos. That is exactly what we hope to be doing before too long. I just have to build it first.

    • @TheGapDecaders
      @TheGapDecaders  2 года назад +2

      Hi Julian, you're right the loo is not mounted in the shower tray. The internal dimensions of the hab box are 5.14l x 2.2w x 2.21h - it's more narrow than standard, but taller which I think helps make it feel more spacious - although low hanging trees can be a problem! Glad you're enjoying the vids :)

    Can you tell me what you like about this model over a cassette toilet? Also, you were saying after you wipe, it’s hard to get the flaps to open to dispose of the toilet paper. How do you resolve that? Thanks so much! Great video!!

    • @TheGapDecaders
      @TheGapDecaders  2 года назад +3

      Hi Kim thanks for getting in touch. A cassette toilet is great if you plan to stay on campsites or aires in western Europe. Otherwise finding somewhere to empty the mix of wee and poo, combined with toilet paper can be difficult, for lots of reasons. Once it's full, it's full and if you can't find an emptying point ( in the UK there are hardly any outside of campsites) then you end up disposing of it illegally. With a compost loo like the Tiny you can dispose of wee pretty much anywhere, and the solids goes into general waste. If you want to know more about motorhome toilets and the different types, you can check out this post on our website bit.ly/2Ts8a9Q. In terms of the flaps, they open when weight is put on the toilet seat, and close again when you stand up. It's easy to move them aside manually and drop in your loo paper. Hope that helps :)

    Actually, no toilet for human waste should be a 'composting' toilet, at least not anywhere where the 'compost' is used to grow or fertilize plants that have anything to do with humans. There's a reason farmers are not allowed to use human waste as a fertilizer whereas cow or even pig dung is ok.
    Despite the Separett dry pad thingy, I'd add something to dry the poop. As long as you manage to dry the 💩, it has next to no smell. This is the second reason for the vent, btw, not just to keep the stink down. What we use is a bag of sawdust that we keep next to the toilet. The waste bag in the toilet is 'primed' with a 1/2" layer of sawdust and the 'flush' is sprinkling a layer of sawdust on top of the 💩. And it even works if you're a bit unwell and have a less-than-optimal consistency - you just use a little more sawdust than normal. We can go for a long time w/o emptying the waste bucket, and I am willing to bet it's even less offensive than what you have to deal with as it feels more or less a bag of sawdust and not a bunch of very soft hot dogs in mashed potatoes in a plastic bag :-)) . No odor whatsoever regardless of the temps. We have a toilet that I put together myself out of parts I ordered through the internet, and it is remarkably close to the Separett Tiny looks-wise. The biggest difference is no flap mechanism - which obviously makes the sawdust-sprinkling much more simple. The nice thing is, the next time you open the toilet, you only see a clean layer of sawdust.

    Gradually coming to terms with close contact of waste associated with using compost toilet, still have an important question though. When you stand after doing your business and the flaps closes, how do you dispose the toilet paper. Read a comment where u said you can manually separate the flaps and I find that slightly uncomfortable. Another question/option, does the flaps open when you press down on the front part of the seat and maybe with one hand? Or does it require a full force by both hands. Trying to understand how the system works, and looking for means to reduce as much contact and sight of waste as possible. I would like to dispose the tissue in there and also pour in some sawdust to reduce smell and direct ''looking at poop'' as MUCH AS POSSIBLE. In summary: CAN I OPEN THE FLAPS WITHOUT TOUCHING THEM, CAN I OPEN THE FLAPS BY PRESSING DOWN ON THE FRONT PART OF THE SEAT.

    • @TheGapDecaders
      @TheGapDecaders  5 дней назад

      Hi there glad you found the video helpful. The flaps only open when you place equal pressure on either side of the seat towards the back of the loo. You can't open the flaps by pressing on the front of the seat. Probably the easiest way is to re-train yourself to wipe sitting down, then you do't have to touch or see anything. You also don't need sawdust (not for the smell anyway) unless you intend to fill the bag before emptying - we empty every 3-4 days. Hopes that helps :)

      Hi Kevin, hope you’ve had a good Christmas. Quite possibly however if we’re stationary for a few days we tend to leave the lid up & arguably you don't want to see the contents of the loo. In this state (lid up) it doesn’t smell despite the concealer flaps not being sealed.
      This has genuinely been the best upgrade to our truck.

    Not a comment on your STT or video (which was good BTW), just an observation on the product overall as I found it in your vids whilst browsing. It seems a lot more work that a Thetford and many non chemical additives are now available for those. Unless you are truly composting (and in the UK and EU) AFAIK no-one is, then you still have to carry bagged poo. If on exped how do you dispose of plastic bagged poo in the boonies? At least with a Thetford or similar you can safely (and environmentally) bury the waste, but at least with plastic bags you cannot (should not) be doing that and personally any compostable bags I find very unreliable and wouldn't trust them to hold a single days business never mind multiple days!

    I got one here in usa and super frustrating experience with usa dealer; first they sent out the 1000$ knowing it need parts replaced which they sent but some reason can’t change themselves so that was first order of business once installed
    Then the toilet paddles weren’t function correctly and moving out of the way so they sent me new hinge mechanism and to replace it requires you remove the toilet completely
    Now I live full time so all this took over 5 weeks without a useable toilet
    They too cheap to send the special tool T25 I think
    I made video to show the compassion of why the other hinge may not of worked for their references
    Was I pissed at having this ordeal yup I let them know but also gave them the reason to problem and you think I get any return emails nope one of the worse services / support ever
    Now the toilet working the fan not as quiet as they lead u to think it’s tolerable but again is like get better fan and apparently over seas some use a slower speed fan to aid in reducing
    The plastic toilet also attracts certain dust if you go by any vial power plants inside everywhere and out side
    So that’s an honest review

      Hi Dave thanks for sharing your experience - the polar opposite to ours! I believe the modification regarding the flaps was something they created after feedback, we found the process of changing the fittings really easy. I agree regarding the fan, it is noiser than I thought it would be - we fitted a rocker switch so we can turn it off at night, which has really helped.

      Hi there in the winter, no smell from the pee. You'd need to empty the solids whenever you poo, if you don't want to use the fan. In the summer, you need the fan on if you don't empty the pee every day. Hope that helps :)

      This really depends on the country you’re in, we've gone into a lot more depth in the written article on our website, see link below
      thegapdecaders.com/separett-tiny-toilet-review/
      But in short, if you consider babies nappies, elderly care with the use of commode liners and pads, you can legally bag and bin up to 7kg each week in private rubbish bins in the UK (and most of Europe).

    It’s also NOT a compose toilet there no such a thing in rv or vans
    It takes least 5 weeks for 💩to even think to composting
    You bag it and toss it
    In USA I had the worse experience with the dealer
    First they sent out toilet knowing it needs work and new parts which they do ship but you think for 1000 usa$ they come updated. So after that the paddles didn’t function correctly they wouldn’t completely move out of the way
    So they sent me another replacement part the lid hinge
    Well You have to remove the entire toilet out to replace the hinge are u kidding me all this over 5 weeks of bs and I’m full timing so frustrating
    Now all that’s cleared the fan not as quiet as they lead u to think. Overseas they apparently replace the fan with one that runs slower it’s tolerable. Now this noise is also outside you can hear it venting like a furnace so mind that as well
