2015년에 주목해야 할 밴드 'MAAN'
2014년 1월에 홀연히 등장하여 빼어난 라이브 실력으로 인디씬의 주목을 받고 있는 신인 밴드가 있다. 이들은 비교적 짧은 활동기간과 변변한 앨범 한 장 없음에도 불구하고, 라이브에서 두각을 드러내어 모든 이들의 주목을 한 몸에 받고 있다. 이름부터 패기로운 'MAAN(맨)'이다. 이름부터 영국의 전설적인 밴드 '퀸', '뮤즈'처럼 큰 책임이 따르는 이름이 아닌가? 이들은 트렌디하고 댄서블한 자칫하면 이제는 홍대씬에서 식상할지 모르는 록음악에 과감히 신디사이저를 빼고, 젊은 패기로움으로 노래한다.
하지만 이들은 신인답지 않은 단단한 합을 자랑하며 2014년 'KT&G 밴드디스커버리'에서 '슈퍼디스커버리'를 차지하며 우승을 차지하게 된다. 그에 이어 '2014 EBS 9월의 헬로루키'를 차지하며 '2014 올해의 헬로루키' 최종 결선까지 진출하게 된다. 비록 '헬로루키'에서는 수상하지 못했지만, 결성 1년만에 이들이 이룩한 성과는 데뷔 첫해의 신인밴드들이 자신들의 존재감을 알리기에 충분했다.
그리고 이들은 기존의 이름이던 'MAN'에서 'MAAN'으로 바꾼 당찬포부를 안고 첫 EP앨범 [Come Around]를 발표한다.
딜레이 이펙트(Delay effect)를 이용한 통통튀는 리프에 반복되어지는 보컬 멜로디가특징인 타이틀곡 "Come Around"에 이어 중독성 있는 멜로디 라인과 리프를 무기로 한 더블 타이틀 "Last", 복고적인 스타일의 "Empty Heart"까지 쉼 없이 달리고 나면 풍부한 공간감을 자랑하는 기타 사운드에 리듬파트의 그루브를 자랑하는 MAAN표 발라드 ‘Pray’와 빼어난 기승전결을 자랑하며 마치 프로그래시브한 요소까지 갖춘듯한 곡 "Calling down"까지 듣고나면 이들이 전하고자 하는 음악성을 충분히 받아들일 수 있을 거라 장담한다.
기존의 'MAN'이 아닌 'MAAN'으로써의 첫걸음인 앨범 [Come Around]. 앞으로 어디로튈지, 어떻게 변화할지 모르는 이들의 행보가 궁금한가? 그렇다면 이 앨범을 당신의 플레이리스트에 추가하라.
