  • Kivas are one of the most iconic architectural features of the Pueblo Southwest. Join us as Susan Ryan, Steve Lekson, and Lyle Balenquah explore their ancient signatures and offer perspectives on how they have been interpreted within the discipline of archaeology as well as how they function within Pueblo society today.
Lekson contends that most of the features we've dubbed "kivas" at Chaco Canyon and Mesa Verde were not, in fact, "kivas" as that word is applied to modern Pueblo ceremonial structures, but rather elaborate pit-houses, which allows us to use them as an index of population at sites like Pueblo Bonito and Cliff Palace.
Ryan’s presentation explores the vernacular architecture of ancestral Pueblo people dating from the Pueblo II (A.D. 900-1150) and Pueblo III (A.D. 1150-1300) periods in the northern, middle, and southern San Juan regions in the American Southwest to examine communities of practice and their social, temporal, and spatial production practices. This research specifically examines kivas-or round rooms used for ritual and domestic activities-to address how architecture was actively mediated by communities of practice and how their production techniques can shed light on group identity.
Balenquah (Hopi), is a member of the Greasewood Clan from Bacavi Village. Balenquah has worked in the American Southwest as an archaeologist documenting ancestral Hopi settlements and lifeways. He will be combining his professional knowledge and training with personal insights about his ancestral history to provide a unique perspective on kivas and their significance to Hopi culture.
Following their presentations, they will come together for a panel discussion and answer your questions about kivas live!
Funding has been provided by Colorado Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act economic stabilization plan of 2020.

Great presentation by all three guests and the moderator. I enjoyed the discussions by the two academics, but was very happy to learn the Hopi viewpoint of Mr. Balenquah. Thank you all. This content is appreciated.

I'm watching this on a day when, in reading Craig Childs' HOUSE OF RAIN, I came to a page on which he recounts his reconnection with Susan Ryan. With them, I am moving through the site that Susan was about to return to the earth!

They remind me of the circular pit structures in front of the step pyramids of Caral in Peru, the oldest site of it's type in the Americas I believe.

The discussion on how kiva were entered was fascinating. I was wondering about great kivas, however. Is my understanding that great kivas would have been entered via entryways on the sides of the kiva as opposed to through the roof? Would be another way that a great kiva is different than other kivas. Or is this just an artifact of reconstruction, such as Aztec?

Hello, I was wondering if you had a video telling about the sipapu in the indians Kivas , when they were used by the Ancestral Puebloans and still continue to be used by modern-day Puebloans. Which The old tribes used as portal’s , through which their ancient ancestors first emerged to enter the present world. they were used in sommoning entities/demons , I was watching this fascinating video that was a really long video, a few hours long, I never got to watch all of it. And apparently didn’t save the video on here, and I don’t remember who the video was from. But the video started talking about the ancient Indiana ancestors, they talked about 4 tribes all with different names , I know they talked about Pueblos and Apache and Hopi but I can’t remember the name of the other ancient tribe that they were talking about. It wasn’t a familiar name to me, but I can’t remember what it was. (Do you know the other tribes name? ) they said the name of another tribe that lived there (I don’t think they are around anymore ) they talked on how they used to live around or Mount Graham, and they talked about the ancient ruins and how they had some really cool pictures and video footage of the ruins , but they started talking about how the ancient ancient ansesters came back to visit the new people , threw a portal. So they dug and built these Pitts with out any roof , the Pitts where a circle shape and looked fairly deep. Deep enough we’re it looks as if no one could climb out of the Pitts. I remember seeing 2 of them. And they started telling how they built them in the spot wear there ancestors first appeared at. And after they left (the ancestors) the built the Pitts. And they would have rituals in them , and would summon other entities, /demons. They weren’t very nice creatures they said. And the spirits wouldn’t be aloud to leave that Pitt circle , until , they sent them back to middle earth or where ever they came from. They would have to vanquish them , before they could leave. And I think they said they weren’t able to leave the circle at all. Until the spell or vanquishing was said and done. Then they started talking about the Apache, and nasa and the Vatican , about the telescope on mt graham and told the Hopi I thinks creation storie, and said the summit is an actual portal too, when the seen a disk shape ship descend over the mountain, and hovered , a white man with white hoar beard came out of his space ship and created the rest of the mountains and made the trees and created everything from that very spot. So it’s a sacred place. Where all over that mountain there re places with portal on It. And they talked about the fact of nasa and the Vatican being sue I. Court by one of the tribes who didn’t want them to disgrace the holy mountain. The holiest place in the world . Long story short. You probably know about it, that the tribe lost the case against nasa and the Vatican (not surprised of the outcome ). But I am surprised that to find out the Vatican fought tooth and nail to build that telescope there no matter what .. it’s strange because that were the Indian tribes creation story came from and the fact the used that mountain as a portal, the Vatican and nasa stolen that land from the Indians . Why did they need to have that mountain for a base.. the Vatican don’t believe in that creation story or they won’t admit they are interested in the portal story’s. But I find it really bizarre they brought this tribe to court because they wanted to steal that land that bad. I find it really messed up. All of it . But anyway. I’m sorry I’m caring on so much. But I’d light to know more about the Pitts the kivas the indian tribes and the entities that came to visit them in ancient times and I guess still used different ones that aren’t In The ruins still to this day . I’d like to know who the demons and entities were. The said most that came through the portal were mean . How many did they summon? When was the last time they used them. And if they say if the portal above the summit is still being used? I heard story’s rumors of Ufo sightings still going on in that same area as the creation story .
I’d like to know more about the Pitts , I was thinking the might of been kivas except the owns I seen didn’t have a roof over them. And some of the kivas has roofs on them . Like an addition of there house’s. I love to learn more about all that and like to hear more about why nasa and the Vatican is there in Arizona on top of a mountain of all places . Thankyou.
Thanks for taking the time to read this .. ✌🏼

In the same video The was this end times segment of this man that was talking about the Vatican telescope that he said the name of it was Lucifer , and that the Vatican was looking for planet nibiru , “planet 9” “wormwood” ect.
And they were gonna try and summoning demons threw the portal. He talked about some Very strange stuff . That I think he even mentioned the antichrist. Not positive, but the show was going in that direction at that point , where I stopped it.

"Qui va" means "who goes" in French. As in "Who goes there?" As in - the people who went there, "qui va", were the members of the secret societies. The history of the French has been largely erased by the British and other cultures. But place names and words in a lot of Native languages (all over the world actually...) trace back to French and Spanish. "Nez Perce" tribe in Canada - Nez Perce means "Pierced Nose". "Dene" means "of the nose". I'm not sure if it refers to actual nose piercings, or if their "perfume" and bug repellant etc... offended the noses of Europeans, and the words refer to how they could smell them and their villages.

What if small kivas are for family use in their year around location. Large kivas are for people that live in outer villages and come into the central large kiva locations for a time after the harvest....
Having outer people come into the central location after harvest would provide unity/control, if they brought their harvest with them for storage, taxation and control would be greatly enhanced....
