      I agree completely. So many content creators follow their comments for just the first few hours, or some even for the first day, and then never reply or react to any later comments so I presume they aren't reading them. Maybe they're creating so many videos and getting so many comments that they cannot interact with their followers. If so, that's great for them. But it is always great when a content creator responds to anything just to show he's still reading. Then, if he chooses to not respond to our post (my post) then I assume it was that he didn't have that answer or the question wasn't interesting to him - and that's his choice. Just seeing and knowing that he's reading them means I might get my questions replied to - if I do my part to make them interesting enough for his channel.

    Love these videos! We are finally getting around to teaching my coonhound scentwork with these! We are on day 4 now, and one thing we are struggling with is the dog occasionally overlooking the scent. This is happening mostly on our first few searches. We are using birch odor in an odor tin and doing some work outdoors and some indoors. The boxes became far too easy for him - he wouldn't sniff each one but as soon as entering the room, he would run directly to the correct container with odor. So we are doing field searches at this point!

    Thanks so much for this video--it looks simple for me to follow the steps. I have neuro/memorydifficulties and so I appreciate the small steps, clearly shown. I'm trying to self-train a service dog for mobility assist on very long distance walking/biking adventures, and as he is a 2 year old Coonhound I think scent detection will give him a great outlet for using his greatest asset and joy, his NOSE!!! for fun, exercise, and to learn to focus. An opportunity to sniff, whether it is searching for a handful of scattered treats, or following some scent usually unknown to me, really seems to end with a relaxed, happy fellow

When he moved back to the USA he and his wife separated and I ended up with his dog. Later, I moved out of the state, and had to leave the dog with his ex-wife and the dog died soon after, of a broken heart.

    Hi! I'm a bit unclear on some of the steps in this video- why are we starting with a cinder block and moving on to a bucket, then a box? Is it just to get the dog accustomed to sticking their noses into different containers? Part of this question stems from sheer laziness- I'd far rather cut a hole in a box than cover the cinder block in duct tape :) Thank you!!

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  4 года назад +12

      Hahaha! It is a pain to cover the cinder blocks in duck tape, but yes, it gets the dog accustomed to sticking their noses into different containers and helps generalize the dog to the training. This makes it easier for the dog when we transfer them to real life style searches, such as building and vehicle searches. I also use tubes when training, but I thought three examples were enough. :)

    Smart dog!! My dog sniffed out an old McDonald’s burger someone threw out a car window, which was under some grass and leaves. That’s when I had the idea to try and train her. She also can sniff out rabbits, which we have a lot of in my area. I’m hoping one day, when me and her move out of my parents home and into a place in the woods, she can help me catch rabbits to eat. It would be a dream come true to have her in the forest, which she loves.

    You do a great job educating....quick question, if i train my dog on birch, clove etc, and later want to change to a narcotic, will that be difficult? Or should I train straight away with a pseudo narcotic if I think he will ever search for narcotics ? thanks

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  3 года назад +4

      Thanks! Once a dog knows one odor, it's much easier to teach a new odor. You can also train a dog off of an odor by presenting it and no longer rewarding when the dog indicates on it.

    Great Job accenting free shaping. Whats interesting is how well this accents how having free shaping logged into your dogs vocabulary toolbox ahead of time matters. This allows her to learn and for you to be able to convey the thought of what you want out of her faster. The old saying of a dog that has been taught how to learn to learn.. Whats the best video of yours that accents free-shaping.. #GoodStuff!

      Thanks, Mark, I appreciate that! I don't have any videos where I demonstrate free shaping, I just discuss it in a few videos. These are all the videos that I discuss the concept of free shaping: Audiobook: ruclips.net/video/ERmJnSwGS4Q/видео.html How to teach your dog to be PROACTIVE. Love the platforms.. what about a DIY video where we can get tip about what we can make for our training - platform, shapingbox, etc :) Really enjoyed several of your videos / your channel - just subbed. Much love from Norway.

    • @NateSchoemer

      You can also start by placing a treat in the container. Then eventually transition into no treat in the container.

    Hello Nate. Thank you fir giving great advice and training tips. I have a 16 week old German Shepard puppy that I’ll like to teach scent training because he loves to find things. The problem I have is that I don’t know what to teach him to search for. My puppy is just a family dog. Thank you

      Thanks! Just use something like lavender. That's what I'm using in this series. It doesn't have to be for working dog purposes, it can be just for fun. :)

    I started watching this out of curiosity and as a joke because i kinda want my dog to detect weed and i wanna bust my friends as a joke, but i stayed for the dog training knowledge. You can never know too much. Thanks! You seem very very knowledgeable, have any tips for a 7 month old swiss white shepherd rescue? Not a first timer, but his super stubborn and hyperfocused nature is completely new to me

  • @anonperson4597

    I have two German shepherds. I swear they must come out the womb wanting to do this. We have never formally trained them to “find” anything but they can! Our female is the one who did it first and she’s taught our make without any prompt from us. If someone has weed….she goes nuts and barks and barks. Head butting the spot or trying to dig. She does the same with mice (we had some move into our chicken coop and she destroys them and we haven’t had a problem since having her). Our male joins in but I don’t think he would seek it out of that makes sense. If I point to things with my stick….she sniffs it like a police dog on tv does and if she doesn’t find what she’s looking for she comes and sits back by me and looks up like “what next” lol. Wish I had time to teach her to do more. She’s so damn smart. Our male is too but they are different lines. She’s a working line and he’s a show line. He’s less excited about working lol. He likes to just look pretty. She is all over when we are doing something in the yard and we don’t even ask. If our kids are hitting softballs off a T, she brings them back. Over time she realized we put them back on the t so if no one is there with a hand out she drops it right at the t or has even tried to put it ON the T. She’s my baby.

    Nate, I have seen in a few of your videos that you will use both a break and a free command. This video is a good example. I am really new to dog training and your videos have been a great help but I am having trouble finding the distinction between the 2 commands anywhere. Is there one or are you just using them as variations of the same thing(terminal marker)? If there is a distinction what is it and how do you train for one over the other? I watched your video on terminal marker vs. continuation marker but there is no mention of a release marker in that video which is what believe I have heard you call the free command.
