Great video!. Maybe you can help me out. I over worked my polais sportsman 450 in reverse trying to back off over a tree.. we'll, something broke and gears began clanking. Not only does is clank in reverse but at least also in low but only when accelerating "quickly" or put under any type of load (hills). It will drop gear out of gear but once rpms fall it will re-engage itself and lock gears again. Is it possible something got worn before the transmission from the belt driven clutch? Being that the damage happened in reverse but also effected low gear I'm not so sure it would be the dog engagement gears. All experienced advice and suggestions appreciated. TIA!!
Sir, I have an 05 Sportsman 500 H.O. and the portion thats splined in the rear end is worn out causing slop in one of the back axles, would my teardown be very similar to this machine? Thanks! Edit: also, what else would u suggest replacing (if anything) while im in there?
Hi there, you said you had to sledge hammer a stuck rear axle. Do you have a video for that as I have that same issue. Actually trying to sledge hammer it out but it’s super seized
try getting a muffler clamp that will fit around the axle cup ,with either a chain or strap attach to clamp. use a piece of wood (against the chain) and a small sledge or lump hammer, hit the wood out. it should come out.
i keep loosing low gear and i changed about 80% of the internals already. Looking at this video to try to get some insight. if you have any idea as to why you r input would be appreciated. 3rd time loosing after just riding it 8-10 hours each time
Very well done video, unfortunately I cannot find a good video on the older style transmissions. I have three older sportsman 500’s that don’t shift, assuming a bit of rust is either preventing the dogs or the forks from moving freely. These machines have all sat for a number of years in Arkansas which is extremely humid. I am a mechanic but avoid going into the transmissions at all cost as I don’t have a huge shop , but now I have no choice, I have to get these three bikes shifting. I hope they go fairly smoothly.
@@1985cjjeeper yeah, not an easy task. I have had shifting mechanisms seize up though. I got one more old Polaris to do and I will have worked through the pile of them. Again I have to pull the transaxle but I’ll be swapping it with one I already fixed. The last sportsman I just decided to part out. I’ll put the engine in my ranger and sell whatever else I can from it. That trans is actually still shifting really good but it’s an 05 and considerably different
The tip about lining up the dots at 27:24 just made my day!
Mate, your video is gold. Amazing description, super clear and helpful. Thanks so much. Keep it up bro! You're helping so many people!
Great video - thank you. More sportsman 400ho/500ho/570 stuff please. Subscribed.

Good luck.
Try disconnecting the shifter back at the transmission and shifting gears from there manually.
@@1985cjjeeper have, I’ve now opened a couple of them and have found light rust on the shifting rods , clean them up they work gre

Thanks for responding. I was curious if it was on the transmission side or just the shifter. Sucks you had to open them all the way up.

hi, I have a poöaris sportsman 500 efi Year model 2007, where is the problem it starts as soon as you put the gear forward. greetings from Finland
Bruh how the hell did you get the shaft to separate from ujoint to front driveline? Mine is so so stuck 98 model.
I was wondering how hard it was to remove and install in the quad? Did you need a hand with that part?
A hand is nice but you can get it out by yourself
My new '21 450 is already having trans issues. Is the trans similar to the 570?
It should be the exact same.
