Sending a samurai sword with a “no cuts” note is a METAL move. Respect for Ghibli.

  • @Kyllybe

This a prime example of good triumphing over evil. Evil rots in a cell while good can still create art.

The more i hear about weinstein the more glad i am he has no place in the industry anymore

I’ll never understand why people can’t just appreciate these breathtaking movies. They spend 7 years or more, producing these moving masterpieces, only for the idiots to dictate whether to cut them short or not. I couldn’t even begin to imagine how badly they could’ve ruined Princess Mononoke for true Ghibli fans.

He said “you cut my film, I’ll cut you.”

  • @Troubadour82

Something not mentioned in this short, Neil Gaiman actually wrote the dub script for Princess Mononoke, and defended the movie from being cut short. Unfortunately, the executive producers cut him from the credits after Miyazaki won the debate.

I can see why. Literally takes so fxcking long to draw and paint one panel. It’d be mad too if a bunch of my hard work was cut out.

damn! miyazaki’s disagreement by sending a samurai sword with a “no cuts” note was some KING shit right there!

  • @mariahkelso3665

My respect for Miyazaki increased extremely. Don't mess with the original director.

James Cameron also admitted he lifted a huge chunk to make an even bigger chunk of Avatar. And the Ghibli version is still more involving, despite being 2D and the characters are infinitely more sophisticated, despite being a "kids" movie and he doesn't ruin the whole thing with the obligatory Holywood war at the end to decide who is "right". Ghibli version is waaay more subtle.

As soon as I heard there was a debate between a rapist and a man who cooks ramen for his team, I picked a side.

  • @98voteforpedro

Sexual predator making demands, good on Miyazaki

  • @batmanvsjoker7725

I just love how when he won the debate, he kneeled down like a samurai with a katana and said "I vanquished him."

ghibli is so rugged for that, its like the polite version of when the mafia in a movie send someone a body part in a box as a threat xD

Miyazaki probably wanted him to commit seppuku 😂

  • @firstcynic92

I imagine part of that stems from when happened to Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. It was hacked badly for the US release, even having the name changed to Warriors of the Wind.

  • @silvercrown4293

I’m so glad Miyazaki didn’t settle to meet their demands a true hero to me. Simplifying such a movie would be greatly saddening to me

  • @tallerwarrior1256

Fun fact: Before the job was given to Gaiman, Weinstein actually approached Quentin Tarantino to write Princess Mononoke who actually ended up being the one who recommended Gaiman to Weinstein.

  • @garym6315

As a fan of Jackie Chan kung fu movies I am all to familiar with the Miramax tactic of totally altering stuff. Jackie's films in the 90s have always been so hard to get hold of because the English friendly versions were cut down, rescored, given new credits etc.

  • @pyrosplicer85

The studios will back down if they think you may have just challenged them to a sword duel.
