What do you think of "Princess Mononoke?" Is it something you would still recommend today?
One of my favorite Ghibli movies.
Obviously
I remember on this christain talk
show called dobson McAllister live
some guy caller called up trying to
hate on this.he couldn't even get the
name right.
princess monochoke? seriously 😂
it's mononoke mononoke sir not
monochoke.
Princess Mononoke is my favorite movie. I would absolutely recommend. To me it is 80% perfect and 20% perfectly imperfect
I absolutely still recommend this movie! Especially if it's someone that's never watched anime movies, they always love this movie
I was a teenager when this came out and my Mom thought it would be "just another cartoon". Even she was blown away by how powerful and thought provoking the story was. It was truly a masterpiece. I can't even recall how many times I've watched it over the years.
even entertainment tonight even
talked about it years ago.
Hayao casually saying "I defeated him" regarding Weinstein may be my new favorite Miyazaki quote. Absolute freaking legend.
I thought the exact same thing. What a badass.
He did something nobody prior to metoo would do. Anyone whod worked in the bizz would never cross Weinstein.
@@FranciscoSilva-bv9qq miyazaki stood up to weinstein before anyone even knew the full extent of how awful weinstein was, that's rad.
I think that threats of violence worked on weinstein as Brad pitt did the same thing
The only thing better is the original Japanese ("俺が勝った")It's even more dismissive than the direct translation that theyve used.
If I were to translate the full exchange in "Hollywood dialogue English", essentially what he said was: "Yeah, I butted heads with that Harvey Weinstien guy. . . . I won."
Princess Mononoke is the most ambitious underrated film he created... it's very ambitious that it transcends time itself and you still learn something new every rewatch
Underrated? Are you fucking know kidding me? Do you even know what the world means? That shit sold well,is on every best anime lists,is rated highly and is always talked about.
My mom rented this movie for us when we were 9 years old not Knowing anything about it. I remember her walking past the room just to check on us and seeing the guy's arms get blown off and stuck to the tree and after that horror subsided she sat down and watched the rest with us and was completely completely impressed with the themes. Still one of my favorites and it holds up very well even today
This is one of those amazing tales that should be shared with everyone. Neil Gaiman is a legend for his dedication to the authenticity of the dialogue. He made the dub god tiered.
One of the greatest animes ever created. This was the film that started it all for me personally. I was about 7 when I watched this the first time, I'm 29 now and I still get chills after re watching this movie over and over through the years.
Yo fam I'm 28 now and I had seen it when i was about 8 - 9 years old. That's awesome the legendary story was able to be conveyed to us at such a young mindset. 🤙
Mononoke is a true masterpiece. It has lasted the test of time. it is magical and beautiful
This movie is the reason I watch anime. Saw this back when I was like 12 years old. What masterpiece
My dad bought this movie when I was a kid. I remember not really ‘enjoying’ it, even though I watched it once a week. When I got older I started to understand it more. To me it is the perfect movie
One of the greatest animated films of all time.
I love this anime... these little insights only makes me love it even more. Miyazake is a true master of animation. His themes and visual style make his movies meaningful, thoughtful and timeless. The voice actors did an exceptional job. It's a shame Gaiman didn't get a credit for his work... it makes sense that someone of his talent was responsible for helping translate the movie so well.
I'm gonna go watch it right now... Miyazake marathon here I come!
I love all of Studio Ghibli / Miyazaki's work, for better or for worse; but this was the first one I saw when I was younger, and it's always been one of my favorites. Mostly probably because it was the first, but I've always loved the themes the story and animation. I still enjoy cartoons today, but there's just something about this one for me that makes me say "They just don't make 'em like they used to"
All their effort was worth it!
I saw this movie for the first time in 3rd grade. It is STILL my #1 favorite movie of all time.
One of the most beautiful films ever made!
One of my favorite movies, WORK OF ART, THANK YOU!!
One of my favourite movies, and the reason my little brother got a love for anime and manga after i should it to him as his introduction to the media
When I first saw this film at a friend's house after a day of partying, I was blown away from the very first scene and completely drawn in. So those 2 years spent to make that opening sequence was the worth every minute because this film changed my life.
They got one of the best authors to re-write the script ❤ absolutely glad he got the opportunity and pulled it off.
Thanks, this made me appreciate this amazing movie even more!
One of the greatest stories known to humanity! I watched original all the time as a boy with subtitles. The American dub, those involved who kept the integrity of the work in tact, God bless you. Sent that fat freak a sword and a message God I love the Japanese!
nice.. I didn't know a lot of this history, but love this film.
Love this movie!! I actually only knew about because I found out GA voiced a character in it and I'm a huge Xfiles fan.
Definitely my favorite Ghibli film.
I saw this on toonami as a kid. It was one the first things that got me into anime and I still rewatch it today
I saw Prince's Mononoke in theaters when it was released here in the US back in 99 when I was 8 or 9. I knew nothing about it and originally didn't want to see it because of its name (ew a princess movie??) And because it was a cartoon (i was trying to be cool and act older than I was). Man was i blown away from the opening scene. Ever since it has been one of my favorite movies of all time and definitely my favorite anime film. It's nuanced and beautiful to look at. It impacted me so much as a kid and I get something new out of it every time I watch it. I'll definitely be showing this to my kids one day it's got one of the best messages in film, that it's important to love people but to also respect and love nature. We have to find balance in life in order to do what is right by ourselves and others. Fantastic fantastic film
One of the best movie ever made. A classic masterpiece.
One of my favorite movie of all time.
Excellent video. The only quibble I would have is when you suggest that the themes of Mononoke-Hime are "unusually dark" for Ghibli. That shows that the person who wrote the script is somehow unaware of Studio Ghibli's earliest works -- things like Nausicaa or Laputa, not to mention Grave of the FIreflies. Although I agree that Mononoke-Hime was a particularly well crafted exposition on the theme, Ghibli has always dealt with adult themes of good and evil, tragedy and loss, and the ability to rise above the bad things that happen.
Great now I want to see this again.
Of all the miyazaki films this one is my top pick. This is by far the darkest tone miyazaki made since and the epic scope of the story and complex characters and not to mention the relatively long run time makes this a must watch. I wish they'll make this a live action film with avatar like budget to fully realize the world building that studio ghibli painstakingly created. Heres to hoping netflix or amazon would notice! 🙏
I would argue that Grave of the Fireflies is even bleaker.
@@petemartell677 thats true but however miyazaki did not direct that one. Still a very profound animation that still wears heavy even with repeated viewings. 😞
In my opinion, any other form of media would not do the story justice. It was executed with such heart and dedication that using a different form of media without the original creative team would never amount to the masterpiece that is this film.
Netflix or Amazon would butcher this movie, like the did with many other works.
Thank you!
Who the hell wanting to make major cuts on a hand drawn animation is just committing a crime
That movie is so good.
It's such a good anime and it's so awesome 👌
hi, love your videos! please do one such video on *Ramayan the legend of prince Rama* , a lot of *Ghibli* artists worked on it
How did Looper didn’t get copyright strike by Studio Ghibli?
One of my favorite movies
i was 7 when my parents rented this from blockbuster thinking it was for kids. My parents were shocked at the blood and gore yet everyone stayed glued to the screen. I tried my best to stay calm with all the violence but when the white boar was stabbed by men wearing his kin's skin to fool him I couldn't stop crying. I had to be put to bed early I was so upset I was screaming. I think that was my first exposure to real raw cruelty.
How they going to leave off Keith David on the list of cast members, when he is arguable the strongest voice actor out of the cast? Looper, y’all owe him a list of top 5 characters he has voiced or something. He killed it in PM as the narrator and a Boar god.
Love the content. Too many ads though...
I just came out of the theater (8/8/23), and watching this movie in the big screen was another experience. It's so beautiful and I was deeply immensed with the story.
We share the same year 1997❤❤
My fav studio ghibli movie❤❤
My favorite Anime Movie Of All Time 👏🏽🙏🏼🔥🙌🏽
best anime movie of all time
My favorite part is the sword fighting!
Miyazaki's producer was a goat for being one of the first to stand up against that gross demon
My fav ghibli movie!!!!
I watched it when I was 7 for the first time. It was confusing but good 😂
Pinnacle of anime
"Tastes like super donkey piss" is by far 1 of my favorite movie lines
Greatest Animation film ever made next to Akira
We need a Ni no kuni Wrath of the white Witch Movie based on the first game animated and directed by Studio Gibli
as it would make a perfect movie Oliver's journey should be experienced by everyone
Studio Ghiblis ideas are unique when it comes to themes. Get your video game garbage outa here.
By "untold" you mean "told numerous times in numerous formats and regurgitated here."
Best Ghibli movie ever
My favorite Studio Ghibli movie
Early great dub.
That Ashitaka's been brainwashed to met the Wolf Princess then befriended in the first place.
I still haven't seen this movie. On another note, I wonder if the Inuzuka clan's tattoos from Naruto are inspired by Princess Mononoke?
Has anybody seen this movie from your childhood
No mention about the movie's great soundtrack by Joe Hisaishi.
my parents showed me this movie when I was 5
So that's the reason the english version and subtitles are completely off the topic of the movie, specially in the conversation inside iron town... It feels oblivious to say the least.
Glad Neil Gaiman got the job. I can only imagine the dumpster fire that it would have been if Quintin got a hold of it. Miramax and Disney need to back off and let the artists do their thing. Hayao has a beautiful spirit and the talent to bring that out in his work.
Mononoke is my Akira. Along with the Sonic movie and Birdy the mighty.
These executives who think we are all utter morons are responsible for so many things the writers get blamed for. It made me laugh to hear about the one who though that we can accept a character is a prince unless they have a palace which requires changing so much just so the audience can see a palace because without seeing a palace we would be confused and wonder what a prince is and shit.
RUclips has some vids of directors complaining about their beloved movie getting turned to idiotic junk that flops bad and fails to make a profit due to executive meddling by guys with awfully strange ideas about what is "necessary" to make it a winner.
No matter how many times that happens they somehow cant figure out that gutting a script for these dubious "it can only be a success if we treat the customer like a dummy" rules they impose on directors and writers.
Queensryche song Real World from Last action Hero soundtrack, is an incredible Mononoke fan vid.
omg. Amazing video! but your saying san's name wrong. its not like the san' in sand, its more like an 'ah' A sound, like your yawing too.
WOW, no mention of Keith David's contribution?!🐗
You mean the Arbiters contribution?
@@DigitalDNA He did the voice of the boar🐗
@@LVMILL1156 he also did the voice of the Arbiter, a video game character from the Halo trilogy.
@@DigitalDNA Yeh I'm aware.
@LVMILL1156 that's what I meant by my comment.
8:25 you forgot to mention Jada Pinkett Smith
Incredible film then, incredible and relevant now, even more so as our planet races towards environmental catastrophe
no missrespect, but that is not a Katana ( i mean the one at the real beginning of these video). I appologise for the point.
fkin legend
I’m kinda disgusted that Harvey Weinstein had any say what I should or should not have in terms of this movie. I just want original works, not what a United States Studio thinks I should watch or what I will accept.
I feel this video is needlessly dramatic. If anyone is interested in learning about the relationship between Ghibli and Disney, I HIGHLY recommend you read the book by Steven Alpert: Sharing a House with the Never-ending Man. It’s a wonderful book the details the American (Alpert) working for the Ghibli, cultural differences, funny stories, meeting with Gaiman and Weinstein, and so many others. This movie is one of favorites and I’ve seen it at least a few hundred times since I first saw it 21 years ago.
I remember on a christain radio
talk show some dude try to bring
this up on radio.
he couldn't even get the name right.
princess monochoke?
guessing he called up to hate on it
calling it evil.
if he don't like it then why watch?
How would he know he didn’t like it if he didn’t watch it?
Work on your logic.
Hobgoblin Weinstein
Hollywood...😆, Weinstein
@Samuel Anugrah Andre Dude WTF is wrong with you. It’s not just about that. Weinstein was an absolute sexist abusing pig.
Miyazaki hates cgi animation
Are they not acknowledging the black voice actors...Jada and one great other and the boar god
"satisfy American audience" is one of the worst things in media ever.
4kids was notorious for this
Unfortunately, that's where the market and money was at the time.
I defeated him 😆
Very interesting pieces of info . ( but I must say, i absolutely HATE the American dub ! lots of cultural details are lost ! To start with, Moro are a godless, in Japanese culture Gods are all Male, even if the body are female, so the original Moro are male dubbed !! And, I LOVE Gillian Anderson, the problem lays with this stupid producers that force this kind of change, and the voice director that DESTROYS the original !!! ) ( I have it in Blu-Ray, so I can change the audio to the original, I am unable to bare the HBO audio version with no option !!! )
All gods are male even if the body is female…
Sounds like a load of complete bullshit.
It was a shame to have an American dub when the original Japanese with subtitles is great.
Thing is Babylon ruined it for us
Not a good financial strategy. When will ridiculous folks like you learn this?
You guys have got to be racist or something, you mention all the talented white voice actors and actresses but dont mention keith david like he's a nobody and hasn't done any great work?
Because POCs MUST have the spotlight right? Just stfu and get off the internet.
How rude and dishonourable of Miazaki . Shame on him and his family for not crediting Neil Gamin
F-ck you d-mbass.
That has nothing to do with Miyazaki let alone his goddamm family.
How stupid are you?
@@HakuYuki001 Shame on Miazaki and his stupid mother that raised him and his gay father
It was so boring. The hero and heroine do nothing in the story.
What is hero trying to do? What is heroine trying to do? What is that women's problem? Doesn't she know that killing gods made them demons that destroy everything.
At the end nothing happens. Humans again start mining, what changeed?
All those death for what... The women got her hand cut and it's justice for all the death. No way.
I expected more.
1) They do "something", I cannot give a textual description of every single event of the 2 hour+ long movie in which they partake.
2) They each have their perspectives and objectives. No, she obviously has no idea that severing its head would lead to the remainder of the body going berserk instead of killing it.
3) The story comes full circle yes since there is no objective solution to the man vs nature argument, but all the characters have a better understanding and empathy for the other sides.
4) Even if the woman (Lady Eboshi) had died instead of having her arm severed, that would've solved nothing. The women workers would be leaderless, being once again forced to work at brothels while the mining would've been taken over by the Samurai they're shown to've been fending off.
5) There was no good side, there was indiscriminate death on all sides but in the end there is a glimmer of hope for co-existence.. a fitting ending in my opinion. Not sure what the "more" you are referring to is.
Moral of the story: don't be an asshole.
The English voice acting in this film was terrible! I only watch in Japanese with subtitles.
