Inp GoW2 is the greatest GOW game. It is the greatest Sequel AND prequel at the same time.
Haven't played the PSP titles and ascension, but after playing all of the mainline titles in sequential order recently I can say my favorites were Ragnarok and 2 and would fit into S for me, 3 and 4 rank similarly in A for very different reasons, 3 being great gameplay and a decent finale and 4 for bringing a more interesting nuanced and contemplative journey for Kratos, I would say gameplay regressed a bit in 4 but was made up in Ragnarok. 1 is still a good game in its own right, but pales in comparison to the others mostly just due to the very basic narrative and the lack of hack and slash iteration, platforming definitely needed attention as well but otherwise the game holds up very nicely. Kinda wish the "platforming" sections of 4 and Ragnarok weren't just slow cutscenes of pressing a button and holding a direction, Ragnarok tried to alleviate this by giving more verticality and attachable surfaces in some arenas but there was seldom a time where you felt a sense of urgency to get somewhere quickly like the first 3 tried to accomplish.

GoW2 is definitely my favorite though
I remember playing the God of war hd collection on the ps3 as a kid. I played it again as an adult, and the one thing I actually felt insulted about with it is the game is pretty difficult most of the time, and then I get to Ares, and he's a fuckin pushover. I genuinely got so mad at that fact, that every subsequent boss I'd fight in the series, I'd say "At least he was more difficult than Ares."

S+ RANK = GOW1=>GOW2
S RANK = GOW3 AND CHAINS OF OLYMPUS
A RANK = GHOST OF SPARTA AND ASCENSION
C RANK = 4 AND RAGNAROK
(hot takes) chains of olympus is the most underrated one and ghost of sparta is not better than chains of olympus + ascension is absolutely over hated as fuck, it's not so fucking bad + whatever, greek saga is far more superior than norse one in many aspects
