You're absolutely right! Something really musical and usable after all! But I also dig the two official Volca Modular demo track from Korg. You should have a listen!
i think the most interesting thing is how long he had the same melody with so much consistency and yet the duration, filtering, and timbre were constantly changing, i feel like that could be incredible both for live experience and for incorporating into music
That last patch was beautiful! I've been waiting to hear someone make a "pretty" sounding patch and then tweak it. I can't wait to get my hands on one!
This is the best demo of this so far. I initially didn't think so much of this synth, but you've really brought out some great variances in the sound and capabilities, and you always have a way of getting melodic ideas out of the more abstract synths. Great work!
Ok, im most likely the youngest person to watch your videos but for my 11 birthday i got one of these and i played with it for about 3 days then kinda stopped, then i saw everything you can do with it and this is Awsome!
Glad to see some culture in the modern youth... Just kidding, I mean I'm 22 years old, I'm part of the "modern youth". But I do think it's awesome to see someone this young getting into synths and weird music. The downside is that it's a far more expensive hobby than, say, pc gaming or DAW-based music production. The volca is considered "cheap ass" by the standards. Not saying it's bad or anything, I have two of these and love them.
Actually since I'm a poor man my whole hardware modular setup consists of two of these coupled with a Neutron and an SQ-1 (which is very handy for syncing volcas to VCV and stuff). And yeah, I know that's like 700 euros total, which doesn't sound very poor, but that's just where all my hard-earned summer cash went, aside from paying rent and stuff.
I have the volca drum but not a modular yet which I might get in the future I think it sounds so cool, u should definitely get volca drum and or volca sample next so you can quickly mix drumbeats with your melodic sequences coming from the modulars
Everyone seems to love the last part, but it was least fav part 😅 really loved the glitchy stuff early on. Amazing for such a limited modular synth! If folks want to make pretty arpeggios, any old synth will do…just sayin. Amazing work!
@@SlawPro It's in Valve's "not profitable enough to focus development resources on" pile of projects, along with Left 4 Dead 3, Half-Life 3, and Ricochet 2.
Imo the volca modular is a hidden gem but it needs playmates badly. A proper delay and reverb bring this thing to life and make it sound monstrous and beautiful. Even better if you add distortion. Still love mine, especially for noodling for fun, though I don't use it nearly enough in full tracks.
"better" is a very relative term. And to be clear, I've tangled a volca in many many cables to the point of exhaustion and it still sounded melodic, tonal and "better". You just gotta know what you're doing. Or you can get a Neutron, far more east coast, or cut it in half and get a Crave. That would sound far more "better".
Pair all of them, i think the Volca Sample is the best and the first one you should get, is a sick sample sequencer, kinda reminds me of the FL Studio one, it lets you change the sample's pitch, length, envelope, and more. Automate these tweaks, make patterns with up to 16 samples. You can load 100 samples into the Volca, is really really sick, you can pair it with the other volcas with a 3,5mm audio cable and make an easy modular system, and they are very cheap.
You plug the Volca Sample into your computer with an audio cable and manage the samples with an app for Mac called Vosyr, you can load the samples you want, drums, synth notes, it has a lot of possibilities
I hope the Volca modular unit someday has a USB for changing the reverb patch. I'm certain they could make the internal chip flashable for cheap if they use Pd, supercollider, or CSound to write it. Having a download section for new patches would also keep people coming back to their site repeatedly. Win win.
Sounds sick to be honest. I live for the first minute there. One question since I figured there's no MIDI in; how would you sync this to a DAW, e.g. Ableton. I don't wanna send midi notes and play this thing from the laptop or anything I just want it to be in sync with the rest of my set, the computer being the master clock. Cheers!
To anyone who reads this and is interested as well: I figured you can send a "pulse" from your DAW - or any other source for that matter - and sync these guys wıth that. A loud square type wave works well, you can go check Make Noise's video on how to sync your modular to a DAW, its their method and they show it in detail plus provide you with an audio clip for the purpose (but many types of audio would work I assume). Basically you play the pulse (put it on a sampler make it play the beats, but really you can mess with it as you wish if you think about it) from a seperate output of your soundcard, a bit loudly, feed it to the SYNC IN and the internal tempo on the volca gets ignored and your pulse becomes the "tempo" , very much like syncing volcas to eachother. Cheers!
You can synch volcas together without a PC, and with a PC, I send a "click" track (audio, a saw like pulse should work)to the sync input from ableton and sync it with the rest of the set (disables the internal clock, hence volca becomes the slave)
Great! I wish more people did videos of just interesting sounds from the device, instead of just reading off the spec sheet and making a few shit weedy bleepbloops.
I think the lack of attenuators didn't stop you from making a damn fine video. I would love to hear you process some of this in ableton and the modular.
Nice video, but what I don't get... I definitely hear Reverb FX in the last 2 mins arp sequence, but I see no patching going to the Space Out effect section. Could it be that you used an external reverb FX?
There are some great noises here. I've never used one of these, is it possible to set it for a certain key? A minor, for example? I'm just curious if these have any real uses outside of EDM.
Can someone just help me? I just got the modular & im trying to record it into Logic! I have the Scarlett 2i4, basically I just need to know how I can hook up my modular to the Scarlett, as in what cables do I need to get the modular > Scarlett USB into Logic. That be great thank you!!!
Zach Buckley I have the same interface, I just have a double 1/4” cable to 3.5mm going into both mic inputs on the front of the 2i4, then I plug the 3.5 part into my Modulars headphone input and wallah. I can record and use live FX in my DAW, Renoise. It’s pretty sweet!
I have to choose between the Volca Modular and the Behringer Crave. I already have a volca bass and volca sampler. Crave has midi, the korg does not. Anyone want to share some insights to help me make a decision?
Some nice gems there mate!
thank you friend!

Reminds me a lot of music like SOPHIE or Arca, definitively modular synths haven't disappeared from the vanguard i suppose
I knew I wasn't the only one pulling sophie vibes. I immediately thought of her
I was thinking SOPHIE to lol
RIP Sophie 😔
It even seems like they got the aesthetic appeal of reaching thru spaghetti patch cables to tweak a knob. That’s rad!
funny cuz it's true, and it's not an appealing feature. it's like playing Operation
Wasn't sure on getting one, even after watching a dozen other video here, but this one sold me, thanks.
The inside of my head, put into a synth 😂 😂
Haha, my head is busier than even this Korg "Madular" :-)
