Great video! I used to live in Portland, and I go back every chance I get. Just keep in mind that as beautiful as it is, it's still a big city with big city crime and other problems. I would recommend the aerial tram to get a really great view of the City of Roses.

is it really that must of a hell hole? im planning to go this summer and want to stay close to portland. any safe hiking trails anyone can recommend?
Hell hole doesn't even begin to describe the way it is here.
I have deployed to 3rd world countries and war zones. I felt safer driving the streets of kandahar at night than driving a Portland road during the day. I wont go there at night and if i need to i go armed. If you want to visit the region you are much better off going to vancouver WA. Its 20 minutes away on a day with little traffic which doesnt happen much anymore. Mt Saint Helens is to the north. And Mount Hood about a hour away the columbia river gorge is beautiful year round. There are small towns neighboring Vancouver like camas that are safe.

I actually think u should shut up Portland is my birth place and yes the homeless are mostly kind and you mean art from the past some of that paint was from people who are gone in this time of life and there art is left and Portland will always be beautiful
@@brokenbeautifuly21 you obviously don’t live downtown like I do. It’s not Art it’s fing vandalism. And the homeless people are not kind. They are thieves and criminals for the most part and drug addicts. Some are mentally ill and I think they should be helped, but that is the minority. Most homeless people in Portland Choose to live that way. My wife and I have our bikes, stolen on a regular basis and our cars broken into almost once a month Portland is hell. BTW: Since my first post, we have left downtown Portland and now live in beautiful downtown Vancouver, Washington.

Where steal soled shoes or boots as used neeldes litter the streets and parks.
Do you like getting robbed?
Do you like visiting abandoned and closed businesses. They just lost both Walmart's, hell even the Book store she mentioned has either closed or is planning on it.
If you go in the summer or what is called Riot Season, don't plan on bringing any clothes you brought with you home as tear gas and pepper spray gets in EVERYTHING and does not come out no matter how many times you wash it.

It’s worse
1. Come thirsty! Portland remains one of America's great craft beer cities and as of early 2023 there are at least 70 craft breweries within the city limits. There's about a dozen wineries and hundreds more in the nearby area.
2. European and Asian visitors who take the video's advice to travel here by Amtrak should temper their expectations for speed; we don't have high speed rail. It takes about 4 hours from Seattle to Portland via Amtrak.
3. There's live entertainment to be had every night somewhere. We get first-name acts through town a lot. Theater, music, spoken word, dancing, and who knows what else are all available.
4. Voodoo Donuts are fine. I think you can do better at the many other donut places around town. But the Saturday Market, shown in the video, is nearby and well worth your time.
5. Do not pay attention to the comments suggesting Portland is some sort of crater with nothing but violence and homelessness. It's a city of 630,000+ people, and we live and work here and the worst thing that's ever happened to me is I forgot to lock my car doors once and someone stole my McMenamin's passport and about $10 in change.
6. It does rain here a lot outside of the summer months. Maybe bring some rain gear, or at least be ready to buy some.
7. Multnomah Falls is about half an hour east of the city, pretty much only accessible from a parking lot you can get to from a left-lane exit on interstate 84. Public transportation doesn't go there. The parking lot fills up quickly, so if you want to see the falls up close (and they are spectacular), that's something I suggest doing early in the morning.
8. The best views are available either at Council Crest Park or from the viewing balcony at OHSU, which you can get to by gondola from near the west bank of the river near the Tilikum Crossing bridge. ...On clear days, of course. On a clear day, you should be able to see at least four volcanoes from there.

I moved here from SoCal several years ago. Made a lot of friends quickly. Have not encountered any violence, nor any particular resentment of Californians. Well, of *Southern* Californians.

As someone who just escaped Portland.... my advice is this:
Visit Oregon. It's a gorgeous state with an amazing coast line, mountains, valleys, waterfalls, great food, nice small towns to visit. So much nature to explore.
Avoid Portland.
why would you recommend avoiding Portland?
@Enraged Labs because it has turned into literal crap. Crime, drugs, homeless situation out of control. All you have to do is Google some recent articles about Portland, even ones written by Portland media.
Businesses are closing or moving in droves. For the first time in decades there are more people moving out if the Portland area than moving to it. Says a lot.

Many people want to visit Oregon but why would anybody want to visit Portland.
Cities are a destination.
San Fran Portland. Born and raised social liberals have taken over and unless your rich and can live anywhere it's a crap hole now. Homeless and people from everywhere because of the cities policys. Crime goes unchecked with no traffic enforcement people drive like they want. The gentrification of a once great city. 😭
Homeless people tend to live in cities because that's where people are and thus food (garbage) and shelter are. Perhaps the policies are too welcoming to homeless people...not enough spiked benches? Idk, anyway...I think that's more of a psychological / cultural issue. The country is lost, still complaining about black Little Mermaid as if the people who write movies and books didn't spend hundreds and hundreds of hours meticulously planning myriad nuance for someone to care about skin color. How about taxing the rich and getting better healthcare? I don't think homeless people are going to go away magically, but it seems that quite a lot of people have disregarded 30 years of public Internet to pray for help instead. How about some more reading? I will always ask them to read more books...books, not propaganda. Seems to be more imperative to consider these issues than finding more ways to break ourselves up into groups (gemini, bisexual, etc.). Btw, the liberal of 1800 was probably conservative to the liberal of 1850. The liberal of 1850 was conservative to the liberal of 1900. The liberal of 1900 was conservative to the liberal of 1950. Do you see where I'm going?
Best to think of things as right and wrong. Jesus was right, not that I'm dumb enough to be Christian, but it's probably best to stop thinking of things in terms of liberal and conservative and ask what is right for the collective whole and wrong for the collective whole. Many socialist countries and even the US itself sort of side with the liberals who have overrun Portland. Even religion is dying and most of those European countries have a non-theist majority. Happy to say the same will be true for the US by the 2040s at this rate of change and if European countries can be of any reliable predictor. Toodaloo. I live across the river in washington and we avoid going to Portland. Closest we get is just passing through. And sometimes my work sends me there but i bring my bullet proof vest. I call it a dead city. Its lived out its best days decades ago. Its full of regressive policies and ideas and has become a Marxist leftist echo chamber where if you voice an opinion that doesnt march in lockstep with theirs you will be violently attacked and its ok with other portland residents. I am young but do not like the "city lifestyle " i spend most of my time out in the woods and exploring areas far away from the crowds. And tourist traps. The past 10 years this region has exploded and made us want to move. 20 plus years ago it was the best kept secret. Somehow word got out. I wish portland wasn't terrible cause its full of old buildings and history which i enjoy.

I left Portland last summer but unfortunately I still have family there so have made a couple trips back. Went to see my sister in Vancouver just last month and it's turning into little pdx with the tents popping up.
If you think the Columbia River is gonna save you from the stench of Portland you're sadly mistaken.
