  • The Aral Sea was the world’s fourth largest lake, but also the site of one of its worst man-made disasters. In the 1960s, a massive irrigation project diverted its water elsewhere, causing the lake to shrink and eventually dry up. But in recent years, thanks to large-scale restoration projects, its northern part has sprung back to life. Michal Bardavid visited the town of Aralsk, and found out that as water slowly fills the lake once again, hopes are seeping into the hearts of residents living in this thriving fishing community.

    Tear down the dams and reroute the rivers.

    • @MrJack1992
      @MrJack1992 5 лет назад +5

      Its not that easy those dams provide electricity and drinking water to growing countries with growing population sizes. In some cases dams are great at flood control. In the case of Texas alot of its energy comes from hydroelectric power plants. In years where Texas is dry the water is stored and used. In years where Texas floods the water is captured up by the dams and put into lakes. A better solution would be to have the lower countries export gas, solar, and other energy in the winter and in the summer the upper countries provide water.

    • @Flying_Lexus
      @Flying_Lexus 6 лет назад +4

      Actually many people in Mongolia do not eat fish for the same reason Jews do not eat pork, etc. They have rivers full of fish. So blaming Mongolians for over fishing is kinda strange if you ask me.

      @Fenixmaian7 5 лет назад

      Well right that everyone does want to fish again but the government is supplying the restored part with fish so as long as the government is supplying the sea with fish it should be fine. And u can't blame these old fishermen of over fishing the sea has been gone for decades they are just doing what they have been missing.

    • @boomshine7

      1 sea problem is enough, creating another one is not so good, spreading the same amount of water over a larger surface would create more evaporation

    • @davexb6595
      @davexb6595 6 лет назад +8

      My understanding is that the dictatorship of Uzbekistan continues unsustainable use of the water from the South Aral Sea. Which is why that part continues to shrink. Kazakhstan has damned off the northern part so that they can manage that part of the lake sustainably. The majority of it continues to disappear thanks to unsustainable cotton production by the dictatorship of Uzbekistan.
      Uzbekistan could easily open up their country to a diversified capitalist economy, abandon their doomed cotton industry and allow the waters from the Amu Darya river to reach the South Aral Sea. Everyone would win. Except that the dictatorship of Uzbekistan wants to maintain an iron grip on the population.
