I completely understand why people are comparing Chromakopia to MMATBS thematically, Tyler saying he was inspired by it and yeah I can hear the influence, but it starts comes off as dismissive. If you listen to Tyler’s past 3 albums, even if MMATBS never came out, Chromakopia seems like a natural progression of Tyler’s work and maturity throughout his career and would have come out regardless. I know comparisons are inevitable but Chromakopia is Tyler's Chromakopia first before its "his version of insert album here" and I hope that doesn't get lost within the comparisons to other artists personal/introspective albums.
I feel like everyone saying this is fighting on his behalf for no reason 😭 human beings are naturally inclined to notice similarities and group things together, in no way are people dismissing his work. trust me, people see tyler as an individual artist, in both a good and bad sense. yes, other albums have a similar level of vulnerability and using music as a therapy tool, kendrick didn’t invent that, but other albums don’t have the budget of tyler and kendrick and can’t sell 200k. the size of an artist is 9 times outta 10 gonna play a part in determining who they’re compared to if there was a pattern of ppl saying tyler is a knockoff kendrick, id understand your perspective more, but tyler gets wayyy more ye comparisons than kendrick comparisons
I agree!! While there's definitely inspirations, from his own words, I too feel that Chromakopia would've still existed had MMATBS never been released. It does feel like a natural progression of his discography
MMATBS is a heavy album not only of Kendrick's journey through therapy but also of the afro-american experience with unresolved and ignored trauma. MUCH heavier than ppl were ready for, and not a lot of fun. Chromakopia is introspective and touches on heavy parts but overall on a lighter and curious tone, very experimental soundscapes, funny and nostalgic in parts too.
Tyler’s whole career is a win for those who refused to be boxed in. He never fit the usual west coast narrative, never fit the traditional boom-bap narrative, and never fit a commercial pop culture narrative. He makes his music based on what spaces he’s mentally and emotionally in. I love it.
Lmao, Andre 3K delivering an album in person I can see happening. He seems like the type of dude to drive Uber just to have great conversations with random people. Lol
This is the first Tyler album I have listened to and I have thoroughly enjoyed it. Listening to it made me feel the same way when I first started listening to Kendrick, thrilled at what I'm hearing and ashamed that it took me SO GOD DAMN LONG to get into Hip Hop and rap music. I've been missing out on so much my whole life! Listened to all of Kendrick's LPs on repeat for months and now it's time to delve into Tyler!
It feels like a diverse, very introspective album. A great album probably. I've listened all the way through, and while "Sticky" would normally be my fave track, I find myself listening to "Darling, I" a lot. I'm hopeful that I'll be listening to most of this album still in 6 months.
I've listened to the album four times now. I think it's sonically phenomenal. I just haven't fallen in love with the lyrical content yet, and no it's not because Professor Skye had me picturing Tyler giving oral to Judge Judy during his review. I don't know if I like how the concept is being delivered I think. Maybe I just need a few more listens to get it.
I get that it's important to digest an album but sometimes it feels like we're gas lighting ourselves to like something our ears already tell us we don't like 😂
@@cwflet01I definitely did that with Yeezus!🤣🤣🤣 But to your point the middle of the album sort of dragged a little which made it a little harder to keep up with. I love the maturity as well as the self awareness to identify and acknowledge his insecurities and shortcomings and the determination to express the desire to overcome them. Despite my criticisms, it’s a great piece of work!
As someone who got into rap through the sounds of Flower Boy and DAMN, I’ve felt (at least since Igor) that Tyler albums are designed to accrue sentimental value over time. For me, his projects have maintained their relatable quality despite the changes in perspective I’ve experienced as a result of maturation. On an unrelated note, Tyler doing ~300k on half of a tracking week is obscenely impressive, and he would have done more if the physicals hadn’t sold out in 30 hours! Just to contextualize, no rap album has matched that pace since CLB in 2021. He’s also #1 in streams for the 2nd consecutive day, above Taylor Swift.
Chromakopia has been on repeat since it came out. “I Killed You” is so powerful. The whole album is very power and introspective. But it was especially beautiful to me his reclamation of our shared black features that we’ve been made to feel ashamed of. His growth has been amazing so far. He’s an artist in the truest sense.
Mr. Morale inspired f'sho. I know you're about to hate it but I think Mr. Morale is the standard and the Magnum Opus. Rapsody and Tyler followed up good on it.
Tyler the Creator been headed straight to the top for a while now (amongst few others). I wonder if, with Chromakopia, we can say he made it! Couldn't have happened to a more passionate or hardworking guy, all props to him, am really feeling this album.
This is the first Album Rollout that made me want to go listen to the album. I like the album.... Can't tell if I love it though.... Like I low-key do but not really. 😂😂😂
I listened to it on the way to work, and all through the day,I feel its a great album, we get an introspective Tyler, but still the edge and play on words we know him for.I can see the comparisons to Mr Morale that people are talking about as well.
People saying this is Tyler's Mr. Morale, I'd say that's pretty accurate. It's his deepest and most personable album, but also probably the least accessible and replayable.
On my 4+ listen of Chromakopia and I'm really enjoying it. The range of sound is incredible. It alternates from sounds you would expect to hear from Missy Elliott to sounds you would expect to hear from Stevie Wonder, all woven together seamlessly with some of the best rapping in popular Hip-Hop music. A beautifully meticulous progression of the sound he has been developing throughout his career.
As someone who grew up during Tyler’s run. I don’t think he gets enough credit for his influence on men’s fashion. supreme had kids i knew in a HEADLOCK back in the day. now every indie guy i know is dressing in pastels and wearing little ball caps. he has been the image of alternative men’s fashion for like the last 14 years. obviously it’s not everyone but it’s hard to think of another artist like that
It's a Great, Well put together Album. Solid 9/10 for me. It's Well Deserved. What else is Well Deserved is AOTY... but Im not expecting it. The Grammy's have their Darlings. It'll probably go to Beyonce, Sabrina Carpenter, or whoever else they like. 🤦🏿♂️ But I'll keep my fingers crossed 🤞🏿
Gotta be honest, I just listened to the album 1st time. I get where people get Mr Morale production wise, and it’s slim pickings for DJs. Noid was the standout record for me.
I wonder if this album came out before Kendrick/Drake beef if it would still be doing the same numbers. I'd like to think so, but I also feel like Kendrick's pop out got a lot more people to listen to MMatBS and learn to appreciate this type of personal, vulnerable, and mature concept album, and therefore primed to like this kind of thing. They're realizing what we have with this album now instead of 2 years later.
Just because something is very popular doesn’t necessarily mean it’s great. He’s been around for over a decade so he already has an established fan base. It’s a solid album. We are in the times where most popular artists are just making records to catch vibes Tyler pushing boundaries and being creative which I commend.
Chromakopia sounds kinda "KENDRICKISH". Even the Noid vid got that black&white shot of the woman that runs up on him looks like that famous KDot holding a pigeon shot. The shot with the kid and girl on the bed reminded me of the Mr Morale cover.. (there is much more in the music itself) but he did big up Dot 4 sure! That being said it's a f'n great album. Well done to Tyler the creator.
Hey Jane, Tomorrow, Take Your Mask Off, Like Him, Judge Judy, Darling, I🔥🔥🔥 I’m really enjoying the project. Im already over the Mr Morale comparisons 😂😂 I get it but man…
