  • On Engineer's day, we bring to light the massive industry in India where lakhs of engineers get churned out with degrees but are not qualified with even elementary engineering skills. "Today there are several colleges that are nothing more than sheds with lecturers who can be equated with a class 3 failed student", says Mohandas Pai, Chairman of Manipal Global Education. Educationist TD Chandrasekhar agrees and explains that due to parental and social pressure, candidates who have no interest or skill in the field of engineering end up being certified as engineers by colleges of extremely low standards. That's why core engineers end up in IT jobs and call centers. Kids are pushed into engineering, even though there is no job market. In other ways, parents and the society in large are spoiling the future of the kids. Anyways thanks a lot for taking up this issue. I hope you keep them for prime time so that more people can see them.

Nowadays a big and beautiful campus, fake placement promises, glamour of nearby localities are enough to fool a student. A bunch of worthless teachers along with the strict rules of university can easily ruin anyone's interest towards Engineering.
Most of the private Engineering collages focus on making money either by collecting fines for unreported leave or for some other silly reasons. They are least bother about the quality of teachers they have.....Moreover they are more concerned about student's recordbooks rather than their record in practicals :(

Actually having done mechanical engineering courses abroad I will say this.. our education is not practical based. Meaning in institutions abroad you are not expected to memorise formulas. They are more interested in how you would be applying the formulas. One is allowed to take a 'cheat sheet' in exam. And trust me it is not easy. In India 50 % of energy is wasted in mugging them up. I cannot imagine doing engineering courses again if someone tells me i will have to memorise that again.

Well is there any good paying job apart from engineering??? Problem is lack of jobs and education system. And as much i know graduate of btech has better career options than any graduation degree. People are forced to do engineering becoz there are not much decent paying jobs in other feild. For example if u you look foreign country there are vast options which pays good, waiter in abroad get much better wages than a 5year of experience engineer. So solution would be
1: increase quality of education whether it is any college private or public education good be of equal quality if not than college should be shut
2: decide a decent wages for employees so that there wont be much pressure in one field. And it would increase demand and purchasing power
3: improve ease of doing business and make a reform which decreases the effort of person tk get licenses from government
    4: improve judiciary

According to me, there use to a duration of "curiosity" among students and that curiosity ends at a certain point of life. That ending is actual retirement. Some people are life long students while some are not. If a student's curiosity ends after driving - he/she may drive uber/ola cabs. If a students curiosity ends after 10 years in a job, either company retires him or he himself takes retirement. It depends on individual.

This is fact that our country is not producing quality engineer but what are the root cause. There are many points like 1) ease of getting admission in engineering because there are lot no of private colleges and are increasing which makes getting admission very simple. If it continues like that then in future there would be no intrance exams because opening college's become business and no one bother about quality.2) Our curriculum, if we see our curriculum then it seems like it's simply created to get the marks and pass the exam. Nowhere it focuses on core subject and practicle knowledge. Our 70-80% curriculum is theoretical and practical is 20-30% which should be in reverse way because when students move to corporate world they work on practical things. So our curriculum do not make student ready for corporate world in terms of technical skills.3) Same curriculum problem with our schooling mostly with state boards. They also do not modify the curriculum as per the growth of world. I don't when it was last modified. There is no proper guidance for students about career. Most students decide their careers based on someone else's career.4) Students are also not groomed to take their career seriously. They enjoy their 4 yrs of engineering with the expectation that somehow they will get a job. They never concentrate on core subjects. They do not think about importance of subject, there never try to increase their knowledge. Only thing they care about is how to pass the semester. There are many more such reasons are there which needs to be observed carefully. It's not the small task because our education system is now become business to bring it back to actual value lots of efforts required. I would thank to NDTV who raise this topic and I appreciate their effort. I would request media to kindly highlight such serious problems which taking our country's future in danger and whatever way is possible we have to contribute to change this system.

I hope one day we will expect later from students and to first from colleges and teachers who are inadvertently showcasing Engineering and failing to deliver it's charm to students! I agree several students have come up with no interest but college and teacher can induce and inject which no one could have done before. We need to focus on quality but not on quantity. Any way there is no connection between the curriculum and the practical knowledge. The jobs available in the market for engg. are also not related to any research or innovation only 5% job's are such. but 95% job's given to engg. can be done by any 10 pass person with experience and hard working ability.

No knowledge because teachers padhate nhi hain.... Because according to them engineering me khud hi padna hota............ They don't have skills because there are no practicals....... No workshops.............. They are jobeless because nothing is being manufactured in India......... Phone, laptop, aeroplanes, everything is being exported from other countries.......... So that's the reason.............. But no problem engineers are intelligent enough that.... They can make place for themselves anywhere....... UPSC, Music Industry, film industry , Stand up comedian, Business man,............................. Ab next target government hogi....... Btech students itne bhi nalayak nhi hai.... 4 years ke college life me unhone har problems ko tackle krna seekh liya hai...... Now it's on government whether they want to take responsibility of engineers or not..... Brna engineering me itni. Berozgaari hai ki.... Engineers politics ko bhi career ki Tarah dekh rhe..... Fir to problems Ho zayengi 😂...... Because present government is doing nothing...........

Engineering is a very easy subject but is made difficult by the engineering colleges. The colleges are money spinning rackets with zero infrastructure for teaching the subject. Mechanical Engg. dept with no machines and no tools. Computer Engg. dept with no computers. Teachers with average intelligence are sufficient for the job if they are sincere in teaching and if sufficient training equipment is provided. Once students grasp the basics and gain some confidence, they can advance on their own. Hands down skill development are absolutely required.

The point being put is very right, private colleges have no infrastructure, there are no professors to guide students, private colleges have professors who did M.Tech from the same shitty college and are now teaching the new students.

ravish, have the guts to talk about reservation also, In NIT'S a general candidate has his candidature on less than 45% seats. while people getting one- third the marks of general candidates in the entrance exam , get into prestigious engg colleges

    • @ak220880
      @ak220880 7 лет назад +5

jo 45% general candidate he na, wo top scorer he unme se. chal wo baat chhor, ye bataao world me comparatively 45% noble prize jite kya science me. Aur sc/st ka reservation bhi jara si jagah me sirf 22.5% he, wo bhi kabhi thik se laagu nahi kiya gya, tarah tarah ke excuse bana kar. Aur social justice to increase hona chahiye har public private sector me top se lekat bottom tak. tabhi education system sahi ho sakta he.

Because, the way in which the books are written. Indian students learn more of the physicist's physics rather than that of the engineer's physics.
And of course one can't be practically rich by being a physicist.
Engineering has become a job opportunity rather than an innovative discipline.
One cannot complain about it either, as the lower middle-class and lower class is the predominant population of India (speaking in terms of economics).

      >physicist's physics
This is very much true. When we started our 1st sem physics course, I thought we'd learn about forces, solids deformation, friction etc, but no! We learned about the Scanning Tunneling microscope! Fortunately the Chemistry course was much more relavant to actual engineering.

My Comment is for Mr Mohandas Pai, whom I respect a lot.
    Mr Pai,
If there is a feeling that engineers do not have knowledge then there is my feedback.
    1. The evaluation of a good engineer depends on how a company selects an engineer. It is not wrong if I say that the way an IT company recruites engineer is like buying potatoes.
    2. The recuiters look at the professionals from small companies like an insect, however it is very different that these insects are much more capable than the lot selected in conpanies like Infy and Wipro.
    3. When wipro gets a project the wipro or infy engineer only fills, amd I repeat, only fills the spreadsheet, which even a clerk can do. The real designers are the small OEMs in this case. I am proud to be one of them.
    4. When you say they are not employable then what are you doing to raise the standards of engineering syllabus.
I, Sir, handly projects for many big companies as OeM representative.. Have made many deals successful for spreadsheet engineers that these companies have. I have been (fortunately) rejected by some of these companies at resume screening stage. I am so thankful for that because this gives me the opportunity to go into an OEM who actually control your projects.
So, Sir, I congratulate companies like wipro and Infy for their spreadsheet engineers.... And all the best to you and your thinking.
    Regards
    The real engineer.
