CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Sybok (Laurence Luckinbill) leads Kirk (William Shatner), Bones (DeForest Kelly), and Spock (Leonard Nimoy) to a god-like figure, but the Captain has his doubts.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Kirk (William Shatner), McCoy (DeForest Kelley), and Spock (Leonard Nimoy) are enjoying a vacation in Yosemite National Park when duty calls. Vulcan cult leader Sybok (Laurence Luckinbill) and his followers have invaded a "planet of peace," where delegates from hostile races coexist in a sort of intergalactic United Nations. Ordered to quell the crisis, the Enterprise crew discovers that it's a ruse perpetrated by Sybok, who takes over the ship, piloting it toward the "Great Barrier," an energy field at the galaxy's rim. Sybok, who is revealed to be Spock's half-brother, possesses the ability to help people face their "inner pain." He also believes that God lies beyond the Great Barrier. Once arriving there, however, Sybok and the Enterprise crew discover only an imprisoned alien entity. Shatner wrote the story and made his directorial debut with the film, failing to ape the success that his colleague Nimoy enjoyed with his pair of Trek directing forays.

The best moment of this movie, fun and right in Star Trek's spirit.

I think despite the fact that William shatner got screwed with the budget and effects but he did the best he could.
I Agree because I’m a true fan of William Shatner
He didn’t get screwed with the budget. Better Star Trek films have been made with less. The only screwups were with effects and the decision to let Shatner take charge. Especially that last one, that REALLY killed the movie.
@@Shadowkey392
If not for Shatner, the production would've failed completely--you don't know what you're talking about.
Maybe. I don't totally doubt that. But, also, as far as I know, Shatner was an inexperienced director, at that relative point in time.
Star Trek too much humour too much tongue and cheek
Marvel need more humour need more tongue and cheek

They really should have had Spock using a Tricorder in that scene. Having Spock just stand with this arms to his side was very unSpock.
Unfortunately, they left all the normal landing party gear on the shuttle. Shuttlecraft usually have equipment like tricorders and phasers stored on board. You see Kirk about to get a phaser from one of the storage compartments in a previous scene just before they leave the shuttlecraft. But I agree. Spock should have had a tricorder.
Poor directing.
@@terrywest111 Sybok basically dissuaded Kirk from taking the phaser, and I was surprised to see Kirk complying with that!
I liked how immediately after Kirk got blasted in this scene, Sybok asked, "Why have you done this to my friend?" This showed Sybok's compassion, even for Kirk, who had been opposing him from the start. Sybok still considered Kirk a friend. Goes to show that he wasn't bad, just misguided.
Yes, this was really a story with no actual villains... except that godthing. Sybok was driven, and self-assured to a fault. But very much not evil, and totally forgivable for what he was guilty of. He had no interest in any prize or reward for himself alone. In fact, I even believe that godthing had used Sybok, perhaps contacted him somehow across the cosmos, using qualities only Sybok had because of his unconventional ways. It tricked Sybok into beginning this quest. Of course, this is just an impression I get with the little indicators. If it wasn't for the few who were pretty badly injured in the village during the hostage rescue attempt, it seems fair that most of those who came into contact with Sybok were better for the experience, having had some traumatic pain lifted from them, for what that's worth.
@@Cre80s Sybok was an aspiring cult leader who was in WAY OVER HIS HEAD.
@@DanielAppleton-lr9eq Over his head? Maybe. He didn't have critical information. Once he had the rest of the information, he went as far as laying his life down to save the others. That's not a cult leader. So, an aspiring cult leader? No. As soon as he got to a destination he was confident the others would "appreciate" on their own, he completely released all of his power over them. 100%. That is not a cult leader. At all.
@@Cre80s " Aspiring spiritual leader ", perhaps ? Star Trek V wasn't a complete write - off. Some people were hacked - off because Shatner had other characters do dumb things, such as having Scotty bang his head on a pipe after boasting about his knowledge of the Enterprise - A, things like that.
@@DanielAppleton-lr9eq I hope you don't think that I think that ST5 was a "write off". Did I say anything alluding to that? That said, I don't think Sybok was "aspiring" to be anything, particularly spiritual. He had an ultra specific goal, a "short term project". And once fulfilled, had no reason to involve others in at all. If he had a privately-owned ship that was up to the task, he would have not involved anyone at all in it. The "leaderyness" in his actions was entirely incidental. Not inherent to his desires, particularly not long term.
Very underrated film. The poor special effects and moments of awkward humor skewed the tone somewhat and gave it a bad rap, but it's the film that best explores the dynamic between Kirk, McCoy and Spock and has an old fashioned Star Trek ending: they wind up on a strange world talking to a false "god". That's why I love Kirk's incredulity when he asks "What does "god" need with a starship?". He's seen it all before. A good film that was bashed because it wasn't the mainstream favorite that the fourth film was (which was clever, but a Trek film for non-fans really).
I hate the 4th flim. This one... not as much but I feel like not alot was meet.
The 4th film was a good one. I especially liked the scenes where McCoy gives the old lady the kidney pill, where Spock death pinches the punk rocker on the bus and everyone claps, and when Chekov is asking where the nuclear whistles are.
the 4th was a mainstream favorite? well spin my dilithium crystals and call me the kobayashi maru! that is indeed a striking statement you make.
"Perhaps you're right..... what is Mr Scotts condition?"
It wasnt a good film. It was horribly written. Such a major disappointment following The Voyage Home.

This movie is one of my favorites in the 13 films that have been made.I dare to say I like this movie a little more than Star Trek IV.
And thus we never did learn "what does god need with a starship?"
I asked a similar question. Why does God need be worshipped by humans? Shatner was asking the same philosophical question. Don't ask in church-- they will throw you out on your ear. If you don't buy their sales pitch. A brilliant question/statement.
Spock vs Khan Trek Rey Texas He doesn't need it, he wants it. That's what is so extraordinary. Think about that for a second though. If you were this being of infinite power that spoke the known universe into existence, would you at least want the praise of your creation? The worship and praise offered by a sentient being (you must have free will in order to be sentient) would be more fulfilling than creating drones that don't have a choice in the matter. One would say to that "how demanding" well, a being that created the universe would indeed have sovereignty over it would it not? I'm not starting a he does / doesn't exist debate. Just questions to raise conversation and provoke thought.
If I created ants ......why does a god need praise....praise is a human trait.
And you raised a brilliant point there, yourself, even.
Spock vs Khan Trek Rey Texas Ah, but you can't compare the relationship between a universal creator and humans to humans and ants. 1. we are not infinite beings. 2. Ants are not sentient.
Though, if we created ants it would be our choice to do with them as we pleased. We could choose to be a tyrant, or benevolent but either choice would be our right to do so as their sovereign creator.
Again. My point was that he doesn't NEED praise and devotion, he just desires it. The continuing existence and power / authority of a being as such that would have the power to speak a universe into existence would remain constant whether or not his creation praised him.
He didn’t prove anything. He just blasted him. That was the ultimate deflection lol
classic narcissistic deflection yep

Fun Fact: Sean Connery was approached to play Sybok, but turned it down. So “God” aka Shakcory (however you spell) was a nod to Sean Connery.
The actor who played Shakcory, was in TNG, played the admiral in “The best of both worlds.”
It's actually spelled "Sha-Ka-Ree".
In this scene, the dialogue between Kirk and the "God" entity in the center of the Milky Way galaxy reveals the three attributes many people assume God to have, and how the "God" entity possesses none of the three.
"What does God need with a starship?" -Kirk casts doubt on whether the "God" entity is omnipotent
"Who am I? Don't you know, aren't you God?" -Kirk casts doubt on whether the "God" entity is omniscient
"Why is God angry?" -Kirk casts doubt on whether the "God" entity is omnibenevolent
I think he is just questioning : 1.- Ubiquity and Omnipotence ... "What does God need with a starship?" . I agree with number 2.- Omniscient "Who am I? Don't you know, aren't you God?" . Regarding number 3 I am not sure being omnibenevolent prevents you of becoming angry ... anyway ... good approach ... XD
*the story goes: the being inside the galactic barrier was a super powerful entity(q level) put in prison(the galactic barrier).*
*The galactic barrier was made by a species a trillion times more advanced than the prisoner inside the galactic barrier, this species also made the galaxy and is able to travel to ANY galaxy*
Also the being inside the barrier is q level and was imprisoned and mind wiped before earth existed, the being did not lie when it said it was god, it has the same powers q have and if outside the barrier it can do what q can and is essentially what humans perceive as a god, but it isn't THE CREATOR
That's a thing that Roddenberry (and anyone who thinks like him) could never understand.
If it has the powers of a god, it Is a god.
Doesn't mean that there aren't Evil gods, though.
@@Rensune There are no "gods" in science fiction really or it is always left as an unexplored narrative - something characters might believe in but never really experience or "prove" the existence. Even if the entities have powers that would be seen as god-like, in the sense of what religion would define as gods or what's shown in a fantasy setting. One aspect of science fiction storys really, with few exceptions, is that they are extremely powerfull entities, but they are still life forms, not "gods". There are explanations behind their powers - as contreived or unbelievable as they might be. Races which reached higher planes of existence, technology so far advanced that they look like "magic" to others and so on. But they are still grounded in the idea of science "fiction". They are still life forms, some had a biological evolution and there is technology used. A true god like entity is a different idea and with a different concept behind it. The moment you have gods and spirits you don't have really a science fiction story anymore but fantasy. As Kirk perfectly demonstrates here with his question, what does god need with a star ship? The very nature of "gods" in science fiction is to be questioned, criticised and seen with scepticism.
sort of has a Demiurge vibe to the theory. In the Gnostic scriptures the God of Abraham, Yaweh, is actually a flawed, corrupted, lesser god but believes himself to be the supreme being. Interesting take
There's a character named "0" that's mentioned in some of the extended content of the Star Trek universe, the prisoner is possibly 0.

It's yet another problem with the script that Bones, despite having encountered several God like beings/aliens in the TV show, wouldn't have the same attitude that Kirk has. At least Spock is left to hold his own counsel. Shatner's ego allowed only himself to raise the question, when none of the three should have been overly impressed.
though bones was kinda brainwashed from sybok's mindmeld too
marsh84722
Good point. I'd forgotten that.
Plus, after the entity asks them to bring the ship, Kirk briefly turns his head towards Spock (it would seem natural for him, in this instant of perplexity, to seek advice from his very logical friend) and you can see Spock doing the same, as if he had the same thought at the same time. As the captain, Kirk is just the more suited to act, that's all. McCoy was indeed deeply touched by Sybok's manipulation, which in my opinion makes his naivety even more heartbreaking : he's a broken man who thought he finally found meaning.
