Upper St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans Walking Tour (4K + Surround Sound)

- In this video, Andrew, a tour guide with Free Tours by Foot, will take you on a narrated walk along Upper St. Charles Ave. This is a companion video to our Lower St. Charles Ave. video which you can find here • St. Charles Avenue New... .
Today, we're going to take you on a walk along St. Charles Ave. This is the street that's famous for the St. Charles streetcar that runs from the French Quarter to the Garden District, and that's the part that most visitors see.
But today, we are going to take you further along that street, to see what you'd see if you rode the streetcar beyond the Garden District, and it's worth it. We'll see Tulane University and Loyola University. We've got Audubon Park, a lot of beautiful houses in the vein of what you'd see in the Garden District, and plenty more stories that a lot of our visitors never get to hear.
We filmed this as a 4k video so get your own get your big screen if you got one. We also used surround sound recording so your headphones are great for this one too.

I'm an incoming grad student at Tulane. I've been learning so much through videos like these.
I was watching something and it went black and you just busted in talking .... Yourr big giant face, Very Cute !! very cute.. Lol like it just shut down and went black and spun out and just threw you in talking right in my face on my big screen. .. Nice I was watching a girl discuss a kidnapping and it got deep n bam there you are. Well hope we have fun you and me now. Lol 5:30 am here in Texas.
I would like to see more about the LGBT community in New Orleans and maybe something about the west bank like Gretna during the Gretna fest
I would have sat in that library gazing out the window watching the day go by on St Charles for hours! So many things to be learned in your tours Andrew. Thank-you.
I have. It's a marvelous view with spring azaleas. It was the home of a famous actress and her aviation pioneering husband. The Latter's obtained it to be named for their son killed in WW II.
Very happy to have found your channel. You are obviously passionate about the history of New Orleans and it comes through in your tours. Thank you
Thanks for watching!
The wealth of knowledge that spills out of Andrews mouth is nothing shy of astounding. Top that with his good looks and soothing voice, I'd follow him anywhere in that beautiful city.
Thanks for watching, Stew! If you know of anyone else who might also enjoy these videos, please do share us with them. We would really appreciate that! Thank you.

Those eyes Andrew, some would even say they glow. Lol. Peace. Love you man
Glow. Looks 🤯
The building under renovation at 31:10 was originally call the Farnsworth Apartments. It was built in 1932, and it's a pretty rare example of an Art Deco style called Streamline Moderne.
Thanks for the tidbit, Chis.
Super interesting and useful guide

We stayed in the garden district a few years ago. We took the trolley past Audubon park to the end of the line, Returned all the way to Canal street. Great ride
That's the way to do it.
Hilarious observation at 20:50 about the Brown House being a wedding promise. Also appreciated were your insightful summaries of the connection of the city with the histories of Honduras and Columbia. So good!

This is an incredible video of this beautiful area! My son and I plan to walk it when we go to New Orleans in June. (I hope we don't melt!) Thanks for the history too! I sent my mom this video (she lives in Atlanta), and put the two books on my Amazon wish list that you mentioned toward the end of the video about the banana industry. My mom loves to cruise, so she will find the information on the cruising origin story interesting. Great job, Andrew!
Thanks again for watching and sharing the video with your mother. We hope she liked the video as well.
A tip for surviving the weather here in June, ice water bottles. Half fill a water bottle and freeze overnight then fill the rest just before you head outside. Sip slowly as you go and it'll help keep you from overheating. Hope you enjoy!
@@jexonox8964 Thank you very much for that tip! Much appreciated!
Most beautiful street in America! Thank you, Andrew. I'd encourage you to give a tour of Mobile, Alabama's beautiful, oak-lined, Government Street as well. Second only to St. Charles.
Glad that you enjoyed the video Mike. Also, thanks for the suggestions you gave in your comment above. We will try to cover these suggestions in our upcoming videos.

I’ll be in NOLA July 6 - 10, staying in Touro not far from St. Charles Ave. This tour is a great intro to the area for me - loved it! Doing the Voodoo tour with Robi on the 9th, and French Quarter tour on the 8th (would be so lucky if you were the guide that day)! Also on the 8th - front row for a show at Pres Hall. So excited! This channel has been a huge help and so fascinating, and I’ve just scratched the surface. Thanks for all the great content!
We have a post on things to do in July that might be helpful if you are still looking for ideas freetoursbyfoot.com/things-to-do-in-july-in-new-orleans/.
I believe Andrew is leading the Music Tours.
@@FreeToursbyFootHQ Sweet - booked for Robi the morning, Andrew in the afternoon on the 9th. :)
Yes to whole video of Audubon park. Thanks for the great tours!
More to come!
Yes his eyes thanks for sharing
Even the men are taking notice of his eyes. lol This could spawn modeling or tv show jobs for him.
This brings back memories.
We hope good memories.

I’ve stayed at that Hampton Inn. Quiet, convenient., no car required!
The Unity Center does look like something out of Frank Lloyd Wright. It doesn't fit in at all. Yikes.
Andrew you always do a great job on your tours thanks a lot

It took me watching this about 5 times to actually watch the entire video. Andrew, your voice is so soothing and the scenery so pretty that it kept relaxing me and I kept falling asleep. 😳😊
I miss Halloweens with the skeleton house. Well really so much. Halloween in the park toured that so many times. Like the history I never knew. Thanks for that.
We will be publishing at least one Halloween video relatively soon.
@@FreeToursbyFootHQ Thanks for the heads up! I look forward to viewing and passing the word on. 👏 the 🤩
Very Interesting! Great Virtual Tour! 😊😊👍👍 AWESOME! Enjoyed it!
Thanks Andrew for another wonderful walking tour video 。
More to come!
I really enjoyed this video! ❤️ Thanks for all the work doing the video!
Excellent tour. Great footage. Thanks for fantastic filming & sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it
My oh my, how much this area has changed in the last 15-16 years. I attended a National EMT Convention in NOLA the weekend before Katrina hit. I did a one night "Ride Along" with the NOFD in the St. Charles Ave area. It looked much different back then. I also hope that the crime there has diminished... I remember it as pretty that night and the FireFighters told me it was a "typical night"... Personally, the St. Charles Ave area is the most beautiful area of New Orleans... Thank you for the walk-through tour...!
Glad that you enjoyed the tour, Tommy, and for adding your experiences here. If you haven't already done so, hopefully, you can check out our other virtual tours of New Orleans ruclips.net/p/PLpNEdLF6RWV3oDPK7SD9GOttlhvaGBsh2.
Hi Andrew- the Vaccaro house was built by Joseph Vaccaro, my great great grandfather. His brothers built those two Victorian houses on Esplanade toward the Bayou. You show them on your tour, in fact.
Also- the Tara house on St Charles has a bomb shelter below it!
That's very interesting. Glad there was a connection here.
Hey, thanks very much! Happy to meet a member of the family and had no idea re: the Vaccaro connection on Esplanade - or the bomb shelter. Filing those stories away!
I must have missed something. I kind of interpreted that this area would have been rough compared to the Garden District from what I thought I heard you say. But I love this area. I love it much more.
Really enjoyed the tour with you, keep it up!!
Beautiful place mate!...cool and nice tour 🇪🇸♥️🇺🇸
Honestly the tracks do look like a really good running place tbh. Great tour!
Thanks!
Your tours are wonderful!

One of the most authentic spots in UPtown is the Camilla Grill. Opened by Phyllis Jordan, her coffee is still available as "PJs on the internet.
Andrew, you have definitely found your niche with these tours...sound of voice, intonation, vocabulary, understanding of the subject matter.... New subbie and $Cashtag sponsor!
"subbie"?? I'm embarrassed FOR you.
Thanks for the interesting tour of St Charles Avenue. I often wondered about these stately homes when visiting. Did not realize that the current neighborhood was once long plantations that stretched all the way to the river.
Those eyes 👀 😎
Great tour - I love the architecture there, we don't get much in the way of a front porch over here. Also grateful you clarified about walking on the tracks as I always worry about you getting flattened by a tram! We don't have such modernity out in the sticks ... not even a bus route 😂
Another magnificent video!!
How about a video on using the Jazzy Passes? How to get around with the streetcars and the buses- which routes to get to where and the RTA app? I always tell people who visit to get the pass!!! But, I don't think some people are as adventurous to just get on the streetcars/ buses and go. And if you get lost, call an Uber. 😆
I’d love to see a video on that. I plan on visiting New Orleans in the near future. We usually prefer getting around on our bikes and/or public transportation. You get to see and experience so much more. Thanks for the tip. 😉
Yes, at least one about using the streetcars and Jazzy Pass. We do have a blog post on our website freetoursbyfoot.com/new-orleans-streetcars/ that I think is helpful. Stay tuned!
I just bought three day passes to use for 9$
@@andariegos9466 Some busses have racks for two bikes, but not the streetcars.
Interesting note: The late Arthur Tong who was the photographer and unofficial historian and keeper of the keys at Le Petit, was in the film Panic in the Streets.
42:45 WOW! I've never ever seen the street car move so fast that it actually kicks up a dust storm behind it. They normally move at a glacial pace, so don't have an appointment that you need to be on time for, when you board one of these.
Great Video

The "Brown House" is actually called the Villere Mansion by locals.
Thank you, Allison.
Thank you Andrew, I can't live in New Orleans but walking with you thru the city is the next best thing. Be Well. Your #1 Fan in Oregon

You never mention the Collums Hotel. That house was used, not just featured, in an old movie with Brooke Shields. And in Clint Eastwood, Tightrope.
Hard to get everything in. Thanks for the addition, Diana.
I liked seeing the law school.

@@FreeToursbyFootHQ hi Andrew. We have several streets like st Charles here in Melbourne Australia. Unfortunately, most of the beautiful old mansions were torn down in the 1950s and 60s and replaced by ugly office blocks. They called it progress at the time.
St Kilda road Melbourne and royal parade parkville.
Cheers Stephen
@@stephenleyden9559 There are beautiful connections between Melbourne's architecture and New Orleans'.
My daughter will be a freshman at Tulane this summer. I’d love to hear some more of the history and stories about Tulane.
I’ll be trying to leave my tip down below. Your video tours are perfect. Thanks so much!
That's very nice of you, thank you. Not sure we'll have a Tulane video ready by the summer but maybe we can get some information to you.
You might consider joining our We Love New Orleans group facebook.com/groups/1721747767985746. It consists of tour guides, locals, and people who are or have just visited New Orleans and are happy to provide answers or insight and I think a few Tulane grads on in the group.
Buy her a copy of Christina Vella/s "Intimate Enemies."
One of the most horrific injuries I witnessed while training at Charity was a man crushed by a streetcar. Be careful walking/running those tracks! Beautiful city. Eternally indebted to NOLA.
The architecture of the Vaccaro House is unusual. The second and third stories look like Tudor beam and mortar. But the first floor and porch looks like a 20th century interpretation of Gothic. The decoration on the porch pillars looks like a simplified version of flying buttresses.
You went past my house without mentioning it! (St Charles and Constantinople)
Sorry.
@@FreeToursbyFootHQ LOL-just being silly! Great videos! Stop by for Mardi Gras and say hello!(assuming we ever get to have Mardi Gras again) We actually set up in the Neutral ground side under the street car stop sign because there's more room than the sidewalk side right there.
I did my externship (pharmacy) at that abandoned drugstore - which was then a K&B
how many of those big houses have been broken up into apartments
40:10 Catholic church architecture is pretty easy to spot. I wonder how many feet deep the Mardi Gras beads have accumulated at the bottom of the Mississippi River?
and a reminder that St. Patrick's uptown parade is now a wiser time to visit the Crescent city.
I do try to visit a local church when traveling and actually found an Assembly of God in the French Quarter on Rue Dauphine. That was back in 2009. It was a really tiny congregation. Not sure if it's still there.
Still there - 433 Dauphine.
I would love to live there !! Do you need a Nanny??
This Guy looks all bagged up.
You speak great Spanish! You must have some Hispanic.
Somebody smokes a bowl, lol
Are those confederate flags designed into the shrubbery @ 9:54min. Just as you are speaking about plantations???
Ha. Very sharp eye but we doubt that this is the case.
What! You couldn’t shave for the video?
That was a very rude comment let Andrew be natural and do his thing please and thank you
Can't believe you didn't continue on just a few more blocks to Camellia Grill...but then, maybe that was by design, to reduce the number of people queuing for a stool. Warm pecan pie and vanilla ice cream, mmmm!
Phyllis Jordan created the best coffee bar in town. There is ferocious competition for the traffic, You can buy her coffee on the internet.
This guy takes great pictures of broken sidewalks and streetcar tracks. Kinda misses the actual scenery which in this case should be architecture. I grew up in New orleans, went to De La Salle High School ('58-62) and Tulane, ('62-66). So this area was quite specifically my old stomping grounds. Watched this to see how it had changed as it is unlikely that I will ever get back to see it for myself. Good to know the sidewalks are still broken. And this guy is boring. On a practical level, he needs to move slower, cover less territory and for cryin' out loud, pay attention to what the camera is actually looking at. FWIW, his tour of Bourbon St. is significantly worse.
nice! Love that part of town. You ended just before my favorite breakfast place, the Camelia Grill. A must for me since my first visit in 1981!
He may have done that just to tease us, knowing it would generate comments to that effect. lol
Love Camellia Grill !
So glad for the mentipn of the BEST coffee bar in New Orleans!
Thanks for the background on Henry Hobson Richardson. He designed our city hall, part of the state capital, and a few local mansions. That spawned some cheap knockoffs in local houses, and my own house features some Richardsonian romanesque detailing interpreted in local bluestone and orange brick in 1885. Thanks for the background!
Thanks for watching these videos, Colin! If you know of anyone else who might also enjoy these videos, please do share us with them. We would really appreciate that! Thank you.
Colin: now that was a great comment. You should consider doing what Andrew does. Virtual tours.

Anyone else here run out out breath when Andrew occasionally does? It's like walking along side him. lol
The house at 57:54 was a bed and breakfast i stayed at on my first visit to New Orleans in 2004. I'm not sure if it's still a bnb, but since I am a HUGE fan of historic architecture. My favorite style is Victorian, but pretty much any building built before the 1930s catches my eye!! Funny you mentioned cruise ships....that was the purpose of my 2 visits to New Orleans (the last in 2016), along with sightseeing.
Great video! Loves the commentary and walkthrough
Great tour! I love the ones where you just walk forever and point out the history. Really captures the feeling of being in New Orleans.

I just got back from New Orleans. Actually found out your video about NOLA in December before I went, but decided to not watch it because I wanted to explore it myself. It turned out I totally should have!🤣 Your videos are great. Now I'm going to binge watch all of them in my home in snowy Michigan. Definitely will recommend your channel to friends who're going to visit. Thank you!
I think it's wonderful you all take the time to show these cities and give the history of the area. I've seen a couple of your NOLA videos and they are excellent. I come from a family who has a strong background in passing information through story telling. I greatly value it. Thank you very much and keep up the good work.
