  • In today's video, Free Tours by Foot New Orleans guides Robi and Andrew and cameraman James show you around their hometown and one of the most interesting small towns out there, St. Francisville. MORE VIDEOS IN THIS SERIES • Mississippi River Road...
Despite being a town of just a few thousand people, St. Francisville is a standout in many ways - it's home to a meditation park with a Japanese-American garden, live music, and art scenes, the largest bald cypress tree in the eastern US, plantation homes both well-preserved and ruinous, an infamous prison, and the biannual rodeo that prison hosts for the public.
This is the fourth installment of our 5-part NOLA to Natchez Road Trip series. Episodes release weekly on Tuesdays.

This is Rutherford again. I will gladly let you all guide me through Nouvelle Orleans! I’m sure you’re familiar with the history of the Canary Islanders that settled in Louisiana in the late 18th century? I’m of Spanish descent myself, and I have ancestors that served under the Spanish Viceroyalty in the Cabildo.

I'm from St. Francisville and have been pretty homesick living in Utah. I found this video and it completely fixed it! Hearing y'all talk about little town anecdotes like Alex the Macaw and the open tomb in the graveyard (which used to not have a door and we would dare people to climb down), made me so nostalgic and grateful that's where I grew up. I also appreciated how much y'all reflected on the minority populations throughout history like Julius Freehan and the Old Benevolent Society. We should all work together to help the community tell these stories with more frequency and honesty! It's such a unique place that you don't realize when you are young. When the cabildo was abandoned we used to play house in there and never knew what it was used for. Now I work in politics and am obsessed with history, and I'm only just now realizing it's because my childhood was filled with soooo much history!

I believe Martha Turnbull’s grave was so small was because of their severely diminished wealth comparatively and he died right at the beginning of the war. She kept that plantation when most lost and with the help of her daughters and Martha’s horticulture skills sold vegetables, fruits etc and even 5 cent tours of the house. What resourcefulness! I would say that was the reason for such a humble grave when years before they were one of the wealthiest people in the country, certainly the south. I researched Rosedown extensively and lived in st Francisville and though I’ve not lived there for years I have a bond and will always miss it. The most beautiful place in Louisiana. Thank you for your lovely video and walking tour

I visited St. Francisville with my wife and kids last year. We didn’t get to spend near enough time exploring. Rose Down was….. tragically beautiful, and easily the most fascinating. The kids were more interested in Bob the plantation cat. Seeing the heavily worn original slave stairs that gave access to the second story was extremely impactful and emotional. We plan on visiting New Orleans this year. Will definitely be looking you guys up.

I found your tours randomly earlier this week, but Robi playing the ghost on the travel channel and Andrew’s stories with the over-sized cowboy hat in the oldest burlesque house on Bourbon have me dying. Thank you for the wonderful tour. I wish ya’ll would have shown The Bluff’s Golf Course. I haven’t been in years but when I used to frequent the course, wildlife was abundant and numerous times I have had deer and turkeys walk out on the fairway while I was playing golf there. The Bluff’s has some of the most beautiful wildlife scenery of all the golf courses in the south. Thompson Creek is gorgeous to look at as well with the steep drop offs overlooking the creek, you can see for miles. It is so beautiful and peaceful there. Thank you, ya’ll do a great job and are always so knowledgeable and informing.

I took your challenge and looked it up, you're right. I found this on the Forbes website, "...If you’re feeling petulant, it’s the Czech Republic. If you want to be cool, it’s Czechia (pronounced Che-ki-ya)." The website went on to talk about short-form country names and long-form names, i.e. France vs. the Republic of France. You taught me something new, thanks.

They don't want to admit to the atrocities of slavery in America. They want to write it out and erase it. Slaves built America and there isn't one national monument that wasn't built by slaves. The towns and cities same thing. Universities same thing. Slavery in America is as American as apple pie. I love having Robie's perspective and the other tour guides never try to belittle or make his experience smaller or less than. I love that and thank you because that doesn't happen for us very often.🥰🥰
