Alocasia is my 2nd favorite genus. I have 22 species, lol. They are just gorgeous. I love growing corms. Sometimes, I hang on to the babies for too long. They are just too cute. I keep some in my own aroid mix and others in pon. They are so beautiful and so rewarding. They get a lot of compliments. People are always amazed. Oh yeah, I'm definitely a woman who looooves Alocasia.
Damn, Alocasias! I have spent my time nurturing, adoring, providing elite homing, and caring for these pretentiously demanding plants and they continue to, be "unalive", by my hand. I deemed myself illiterate in the horticultural care of the Regal Alocasias, but I was determined to let no other know of my failures and decided my only recourse was to overthrow this monarchy of aroids. The coup d'etat took place early in the Australian Summer morning and the potted plants were exiled to the back corner of my yard. I am not sure of the time that passed but on a pilgrimage to the garden shed to retrieve bulbs stored for Autumn planting, glistening leaves of green, some with elaborate veins of white, others reminiscent of voluptuous and leggy Syngonium, caught my eye; they were emerging, strong and thriving in the filtered light of the trees, cool and leafy, and moist ground. Damn, Alocasia's!
Perhaps, you might live stream your open house party and plant sale for those of us who can not attend. I fell in love with alocasias when I was 7 years old, living in the Philippines. Now, a favorite in the deep south shade of the US. Where we enjoy their company with a glass of ice tea.
For anyone who’s plant only ever grows 1-2 leaves and drops one as it gains one, try putting it in a warmer environment!! In winter I don’t turn on my heat unless it gets below 65 F. At 65 consistently, my alocasia go dormant. At 71 ish they start growing in again, but slowly. In summer I don’t turn on my AC until it gets to 80. Above 75 degrees they start growing FAST and BIG. by the end of summer last year they all had like 10 leaves the size of my hand. I know most people won’t want to have their house that warm, but at least know it’s not all your fault they don’t grow well lol
So much valuable information here to unpack. These are my fav plants ever and now that I live in North Carolina, mine grow up to 10feet tall. 🌱 thank you so much for highlighting such a beautiful and versatile plant. Oh and yes.. if you cut a stem and get the sticky serum on you … it will burn like crazy 🇬🇧🌱
I just got my first Alocasia. Mine is the variegated-wrinkle-leaf variety. I had no idea she was going to such a "pillow princess" of a plant. A "pillow princess" just lies there and casually demands the other participant do A L L of the work. When I saw your title, I had to admit I was struck with a bit of dread. I am an excellent house plant gardener, but most of my wonders are not particularly demanding. I do have 5 different orchids that bloom every year, and three cactus that also bloom every year. I guess I do sort of qualify as a plant magician. But now, I am a bit nervous for the Alocasia. Thanks for this heads up.
Wonderful video. Love A,ocasia and have a whole try of corms that I am dreading to try to root because my low success rate.....I am going to try the moss as you just showed....this video is right on time! Thanks for the history lesson on Alocasia too! P.S. I have many dormant Alocasias I am looking forward to popping back to life! Keep digging! Love from MN USA
Yea I'm in sunny Australia and our colocasia will grow from a piece of a piece of a piece of rhizome. It certainly makes a difference if you grow what's native to your climate. Unreal perfection. I have around 30 alocasia loving our Aussie spring they are my favourite, because if you need to start over from scratch you absolutely have that opportunity. I find the zebra stem alocasias to be the hardest to grow. Is it true that maculata is the world's biggest?? Before u chopped her to death? Lol
This was great! I can only get my alocasias to have one or two pathetic leaves. Still, the facts were interesting and its always wonderful to hear you describe anything at all. Thanks so much!
Actually alocasia and colocasia are eaten in some parts of the world i think its the corms and tubers they eat though. Ive stumbled upon a fee writting about how some varieties are eaten.
Excuse me, that Australian from Facebook here again. But June is my birthday and this is just rude because I’m never going to be able to make that open house (which lowkey is my dream) 😭
Funny and informative content. Thank you
There is no reality where this guy doesn’t grow….. “hemp”…. But seriously best plant videos on RUclips. Keep up the good work!
If I ever plan a trip over the pond I must plan it when you’re having an open house. 🤞

I love a good history lesson! It's cool how some varieties kind of have plant super-powers.

When do you start watering the potted plants and how often to water before they have leaves?

So I'm guessing Alocasias aren't your thing then?
Do you REALLY talk like that - is is simply for effect!
I like the information on the videos but gosh I struggle with the way of talking! So cringe 😬
