Staying Like a Local in Kyoto

  • Something I always wished people would experience when they visit Japan is staying in a regular apartment like many Japanese do. Well, I’ll show you what one kind of looks like, and you can even stay there yourself. On top of this, I visit some lesser known, local places in Kyoto to show you a bit of what life at the not-so-crazy tourist spots are like.

    Wow, I'm so surprised that Ben's Guesthouse offers a website in polish of all languages! I'm impressed. Seems like a place I'd love to stay in if I ever come to Kyoto on my own.

      Yeah, I thought it's better than Airbnb because your spot will be guaranteed as it's an official business. No potential for cancellations. Also, no special meetup locations or times. If you're showing up past their check-in hours, they have a way to get the keys easily to you. So it's more like a hotel experience in that way, but you get to stay in a Japanese apartment like a normal working Japanese person would.

    Wow Greg, I'm impressed. Your right the rental was not as traditional as others but it looks comfortable and cozy. This part of Kyoto is a place if you want to check out a quieter part of the city without the rush and noise. If I get out there I will check Ben's place and also the scenery. Thanks Greg.

      Yeah, it's good to see a more regular part of Kyoto, but there's still interesting stuff that's easily accessible. I think it's good for groups of people and/or for people staying for more than a day or two.

    I guess the good thing with the lockdown is that there are less crowds in those touristy areas. I visited in early March which was perfect and less foot traffic. I had Arashiyama bamboos all to myself.

    Looks just like my apartment I had in Tokyo, simple but so cozy.
    My favorite type of area in Japan is just like in that neighborhood, where the locals live, I just love the calm everyday life in those areas.

    Hey Everyone. While I was in Kyoto filming Kyo-machiyas ruclips.net/video/NljSnaZ2WiY/видео.html and green tea farms ruclips.net/video/S04_KBC8mIA/видео.html, I got an offer to stay at a guesthouse in Kyoto. I said yes because it looked like a group of visitors could stay at affordably and offers a place that is very similar to a typical Japanese apartment. If you're interested in visiting, check out the place at www.bensguesthouse.kyoto.jp/.

    this is an off topic question but it just came to me - is there a culture in japan like there is in the US of restaurants keeping 'secret recipes'? like a restaurant here will have all of their famous dishes and if you ask them how they make it they might show you parts of it and then tell you that the rest is a secret. they want to keep you from potentially steeling their business. i was thinking, 'that seems like something japan wouldn't do'

    I'm so sad every time I hear about how crowded Kyoto is now with tourists...and I'm worried the same thing will happen to the Tohoku region in a decade. 😅

    • @LifeWhereImFromX
      @LifeWhereImFromX  5 лет назад +1

      After having visited Tohoku a few times, I don't think it'll ever get that busy in most areas. I was able to get quite a non-tourist experience when I went. But if you go to Matsushima, then yes, that'll be touristy. But as a whole, it's way less busy then Kyoto or Tokyo. Also, with Kyoto, if you don't go to the major tourist places, I didn't find it bad at all. So, you just have to choose wisely or go early.

    Living there would suck not close to any food grocery stores and public transport is a real problem 2 very big no nos when it comes to looking for a place to live if you aren't well versed on Japan

    • @LifeWhereImFromX
      @LifeWhereImFromX  5 лет назад

      It's actually very close to both. It's just not right in the heart of a tourist district.

    • @couttsw
      @couttsw 3 года назад

      My take from this is that Ben's Guesthouse is not a place to live, it is a cross between a hotel and an airbnb, you might be there a few days or a week, and the benefit of the kitchenette is not having to eat out every meal.

  • @astro5653
    @astro5653 5 лет назад

    so what are the best times (for avoiding the bigger crowds) to visit the different places in Kyoto? I'm going later this year and I'd like to avoid a mass of tourists.

    • @BanBanChi
      @BanBanChi 5 лет назад +1

      Late September is warm, kids are in school already so the local tourists will not be everywhere. October is good before the autumn leaves change. November is crowded because of the leaves so avoid. December is ok, before the madness of new year but winter can be very very very windy and that wind chill will make you miserable.
      I despise Japanese summer humidity so I stay indoors working from June until September, but the rest of the time I'm out in force and I find it more bearable and less crowded everywhere, except during cherry blossom season. That's madness.

    • @LifeWhereImFromX
      @LifeWhereImFromX  5 лет назад +1

      What BanBan Chi says seems right to me, but I'm not super well versed with the timing of tourist spots since I virtually never go during busy times. As for times of day, I think if you go really early or really late, then you'll experience less crowding, even if it's a touristy spot. But there are so many great spots that are not the top 5 or top 10, especially in a city like Kyoto.

    • @astro5653
      @astro5653 5 лет назад

      @@BanBanChi
      And to think I'm already booked for the end of October~first two weeks of November so i could see the autumn colors. Thanks though! I'll just have to finesse the actual times of day I go to the places i'll be visiting then.

      Thanks! Yeah, the hardest part about planning this trip for me is trying to squeeze in as much Kyoto as I can in just three nights! It’s kind of overwhelming, I may need to extend my Kyoto booking for a fourth night lol.
      Nikko, Sendai, and Tokyo I’ve got planned out pretty well for the most part, but Kyoto is a doozy.
