    I shouldn't have watched this. Now my heart feels heavy again.
    I went to Japan 2016 after dreaming long about it. The culture, nature and people always fascinated me. So i was so happy that i finally could see Japan. I went there for round about 3 weeks. 1 week Tokyo, 1 week Hiroshima and 1 week Kyoto.
    Tokyo was fascinating to see! This really is another dimension of a city.
    Hiroshima was... beautiful but it made me think a lot. The memorial park, the flame, the buildings... it left something in me i can't really describe. Still it is an amazing city and luckily on the last night there a street festival took place. I saw so many beautiful Yukata!
    And then there is Kyoto.
    I saw a lot of the world already for my young age but i left only a few pieces of my heart somewhere. One in Scotland, one in Costa Rica, one in the north of germany (but i have family at the cost there so it actually is very special and may not count in this ranking) and Kyoto.
    Kyoto got me from the start. As soon as i arrived there i felt this is a special place to be.
    The mix between old and new, modern and tradition is amazing. The whole city is a beautiful gem! The small streets, the relaxed people, the peace and calm that lingers in the air. Also the river (Kamo) such a beautiful scenery!
    I went to the bamboo forest ofc and i saw the Golden Pavillion bc i really wanted to see it and it is worth it tbh. Kyoto also was the reason that made me thought i wanna go back to Japan but in autumn! When the marple starts to bleed. Oh gosh it must be so beautiful to see it live!
    I mean yes Sakura season may be wonderful but i really really wanna see Japan in autumn, when the trees bleed into their leafs.
    Also i got hungry watching this, this is not fair XD Ah i miss the good food :( I really wanna go back one day!
    Thank you for sharing this with us! Especially the tour on the river looked amazing.

      If you didn't already, I highly recommend touring Kyoto by bicycle next time. Bike rentals are free and it makes the whole thing much better. There's nothing like cycling through the old and narrow feudal streets of Kyoto with the mountains scenery expanding in front of you. Also, have you visited Fushimi Inari shrine? I was kinda skeptical it may be a tourist trap since it's so popular but...it was simply incredible. What an experience! I went at night for the most eerie and spiritual experience of my life.

      I feel great longing now especially, in this wretched year that is 2020. I agree with what you wrote about with great longing: my next trip to Kyoto will be in the autumn. I bet it will be so stunning we both just gasp when confronted by that fiery vista, those bright trees being lit up in the sunshine. I really hope you get to see this in 2021. xo :)

    Arashiyama area is wonderful! To be honest, I have only been in Kyoto once (and going back there in a week), but my best recommendation would be to rent a bike and explore ALL of Kyoto on bike (aside from the day trips), bike rental is super cheap, you can even get hostel/hotel deals on airbnb or other sites that will lend you a bike for free with your stay. Traveling everywhere on bike and finding small places or unvisited shrines/paths makes the experience all the more amazing. Of course, you need to have a bit of energy, so I may not recommend this for the elderly, but Kyoto is all doable on bike and totally worth it if you can do it ( I did a 3 day trip on bike and saw pretty much every main attraction + off the beaten routes).

    Even as someone typically averse to crowds when traveling, I have to say the Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji) is absolutely worth it. Especially on a bright, sunny afternoon, when it gleams in the light.

    • @TheBaldr
      @TheBaldr 4 года назад +1

      I used to live near it. The best is when it snows, but that rarely happens in Kyoto. It is the most crowded, but the best for pictures.

    • @robrosy
      @robrosy 4 года назад

      Not sure if I can concur, when I went in autumn it was so absolutely jam packed. That combined with the fact one cannot actually get inside the pavilion meant it truly felt like one is just being swept past by a wave of humans only to snap a pic and move on. There wasn’t enough time and space to take a moment in appreciating the building. There were busses unloading huge swathes of tourist every half a second, literally!

This was that video. I love Japan and I love to see new and exciting sites. I will be there in a very short as a release and a calm down. I wish my mother got to see what I've had the privilege to see the many times I've personally been there but sadly it did not happen. Thank you again Angela and miss your videos. Another thing we really enjoyed was the Tea Ceremony Camellia not far from Kiyomizu-dera temple. It is geared toward foreigners but not in a cheesy way. We got to make our own matcha tea and learn everything that takes place during a traditional tea ceremony.

    If your staying near a Keifuku Randen station, take the first Randen in the morning to Arashiyama. There won't be any tourist out that early and it absolutely nice. Find a coffee shop that overlooks the river and have a nice breakfast. If your coming from the bamboo forest, go to the very end turn left into the park and follow the signs up to the overlook and down to the river. If your on the river, follow it up into the park and follow the signs into to the overlook, then come down the opposite side to follow the signs to bamboo forest.

You can see a lot of China, Korea, Taiwan, Indonesia, Phillipine, Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong there. Other place where people from around the world convened includes USJ, Arashiyama, Kaminarimon, Fushimi Inari Taisha and Harajuku. That's why I planned with intent to avoid the crowd.

    Spent a month there...mid oct to mid nov. Was very careful to stay away from the big tourist spots as best i could...Kyoto Station, Nijo Castle, Kurama Fire Festival, Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, Ginkakuji, Gion, and Kinkakuji were all nightmares. I did go to Kinkakuji when it was raining....got some beautiful pictures. My favorite was when i went to Uji...on a very rainy day. Byodoin and the temples were awesome. The Genji Monogatari museum is small but worth a visit. Went up the monorail to Enryakuji on Mt. Hiei....then walked to the tippy top 848m up....to the flower garden with the observatory that lets you see ALL of Kyoto (Kurama and Lake Biwa included). Went out to Hikone on the other side of Lake Biwa and spent a day in and out of Hikone Castle. Kurama is awesome to visit (on days other than the fire festival) i walked up one side and down the other. Decided to go Fushimi-Inari at night....walked to the top. The Imperial Tombs in Fushimi are cool...Emperor Meiji's tomb isnt far from Fushimi-Momoyama Castle. saw the Jidai Matsuri, a ceremony for toys, and a parade in Arashiyama. went up every side path i could find.....went to the top of 5 mountains. visited a ton of shrines/temples. walked the grounds of the Imperial Palace. even got to visit Murasaki Shikibu's tomb. i took 9000 pictures and 300hours of video. brought back home 190lbs worth of luggage. I cant wait to go back

    Your videos are fantastic. I love your inclusion of maps-- edited at EXACTLY the right moment, when you are talking about a travel route etc. Only an intelligent educator and explorer like yourself will work with the knowledge that people absorb information differently and many are visual learners-- even if someone is not so much that way, it definitely helps facts and tips sink in better for everybody who clicks on travel videos for primary reasons that pertain to research rather than just entertainment. Your dynamic editing and visual descriptions offer real 'zing' and energy to a video to break it up like this. It is worth your effort and I just wanted to let you know that these little moments of flair do no go unnoticed. They are valued and appreciated. Thank you for these videos. I can't WAIT to return to Japan. I've missed it so much this year. :)

    ive been in kyoto 3 months ago and using a bike for exploration was the best decision of them all
    unfortunately and what may be unclear to most people is that you are not allowed to "park" at any random place in kyoto - you gotta find a bicycle parking space
    thankfully most of the temples and shrines do have one for free however not all hotels have one
    i had my difficulties finding a public one being usable throughout the night which is why i had to bring back the bike to the rental shop (which closed at 6pm)
    hence i couldnt use the bike for some night exploration
    however it is true that you wont find too many tourists on bike and riding it you may find some other places worth exploring on the way
    i got my bicycle in a shop 10-15minutes away from the nijijo castle
    "자전거 대여소 Bycicle Rental Shop" was its name if i remember correctly and they were super nice and open to foreigners!

    Nice video, although it was difficult hearing that the maicho left school after her elementary school years to pursue becoming a geisha, And now she would like to be a university student. I hope she eventually goes back to school, in some capacity...

    In Kyoto I usually rent iBis hotel right next to Kyoto station so I can use my JR pass at any moment like going to Uji, Nara, Nagoya, Himeji, Kobe or Osaka. It's reasonably priced, has amazing service and very good traditional breakfast. To take a selfie with no people in Arashiyama you have to take the very first train there, tho you'll still bump into a bunch of photographers. The area and nature beyond the forest is still amazing and worth seeing. Fushimi Inari is worth visiting closer to the evening and don't be lazy to go to the top. Most tourists turn around not even reaching the middle, so you have a good chance of getting selfie with no people or being attacked by wild monkeys. Gion is always crowded, but I still love it. Love to walk along Kamo river. Love Kyoto.

    I only did eikando and kodaiji for autumn in kyoto main city during my trip dec 1-7 2019. I did day trips to kurama, and uji, amazing that tourists concentrated on kyoto. not so much in Kurama and Uji.
