Drummer ist Christian Eigner, their live Drummer since 1998 Tour. But not a full member of the band. Their live Keyboarder is Peter Gordeno, also joined as live musician 1998, but also not official member.
At this point the band were about 50 years old but still put on a rocking concert for this album. As someone said the drummer is Christian Eigner and keyboardist is Peter Gordino. Can you imagine it took two musicians to replace Alan? Christian and Peter are great musicians that have been unofficial band members since Alan’s departure.
It didn‘t take two musicians to replace Alan. They just had a permanent drummer on Stage from 1997 onwards. That‘s why they hired two live musicians instead of just one.
Agree with @SkyelD Alan could do all that and also was a big part in the production work for the songs! He left a big gap in the band, that has not been filled up to date.
Yes Alan left a very big HOLE into DM structure, but as a drummer you can not compare him with Cristian Aigner, Cristian bisba profesional drummer as Alan on hus side is just a begginer, as a drummer i mean,,,,
This is a pretty nice song. It actually ages quite well. Lots of fans didn't love the blues of Delta Machine, but it produced some gems. My favorite on the album is Should be Higher. But I do love Secret to the End.
The video was filmed in the Marigny Opera House, a decommissioned Catholic Church called Holy Trinity originally. Freelove was also filmed in Louisiana, I believe also in New Orleans- it looks like pre Katrina neighborhoods. I find Dave’s voice so beautiful in this song. I like Delta Machine, and appreciate the diversity in their music sounds of the different albums and different stages in the band’s life.
Starting from the Ultra and up to Spirit album, there was always 4 years gap in-between each album. 1997-2001-2005-2009-2013-2017 respectlivelly. My father always jokes that they waste all earned money from last tour and doing new album to make money again
You know what? This is dope. This reminds me of an old school rock 'n' roll ballad type of song. I like this one. Really like it. @Seph: Here in the good ol' USA is Mother's Day today Seph so I would like to wish you & your Mom a very happy & lovely Happy Mother's Day 🌹💜🌹🙏💕 Even if you Brits celebrate Mother's Day on a different date. And yep I googled that 😅 Fabulous reaction Seph! Thanks for sharing 💐 Peace ✌& blessings 🙏 & much love 💖💜💚💙💛 to you & yours & to one & all here as well 💕💕💕💕
And just as significant we have watched ourselves grow up and grow older as we have watched the band age. Marking phases of our life and events in relationship with the band's records and performances.
Hello! You can also listen to the demo (all the demos for this album have been published recently, even one instrumental demo SHIZM, which was never transformed into song). It’s very close to the final cut , but Martin is on the vocal (and in 2024 Martin sang Heaven in acoustic). Something to add: Dave developed well as a vocalist after Songs of Faith and SOFAD (On this album his voice changed seriously). He said when he sang Condemnation (his favourite Depeche Mode song), he finally felt that he is a real singer. On albums from 1980-s you won’t find songs like Sister of Night or When the body speaks (Mark Bell who produced Exciter helped to develop his skills). Between Sounds of the Universe and Delta Machine he had a cancer, drug addiction from past won’t give to forget about itself.
There's a Jonathan Ross interview (that's on RUclips btw) where the DM guys goofed off with him, then performed this song. It was lovely! The gap between Sounds of the Universe and Delta Machine is about 4 years.
aww Seph, you're right, the DM album journey is winding down! But luckily you still have the concerts and videos to experience. Heaven came out when my family had a couple of members pass on, so this is very "of that time" for me. Very soulful, I love how Martin and Dave harmonize here.
According to the director, the video is inspired by the 2011 film, "The Tree of Life", by Terrence Malick. Coincidentally, in the park Audubon of New Orleans, there is also a large tree called "The Tree of Life", so it was decided to incorporate images of it into the video.
You take their age progression in the face as you discover the band in such a short time as opposed to the earlier fans you grewed up with them. So you're right. Apart from that I like the jacket Dave's wearing. It reminds me the 87 to 90 period.
This song popped back in my head a few weeks ago. Beautiful song but don’t care for the video. There’s a studio version that’s available on RUclips and worth a listen.
The video was filmed in a decommissioned Catholic Church in New Orleans. The Freelove video was also filmed in Louisiana, I believe also in New Orleans. The area looks like pre Katrina neighborhoods. I think Dave’s voice is beautiful in this song. I like Delta Machine, and appreciate the diversity of sounds that DM has in different albums and stages in their lives.
Agree with your analysis here. Heaven is definitely a good song, but something still makes it not really stand out for me either. After the Songs of faith and devotion album, it became a rule for Depeche to release a new album with a longer time span, after every four years. Likewise between Sounds of the universe 2009, and Delta machine 2013. I don't think the aging in appearance was that much between these albums and in 4 years, rather I think you haven't seen the band members in any video since the Playing the angel album in 2005. - Don't think any of them showed up in any video from Sounds of the universe, at least not in the action videos you made from SOTU. So the last time you saw Dave, Martin and Fletch was in one of the videos from the 2005 Playing the angel album, and it is from this time that you are now comparing their looks and aging. You have two albums left after this one. Spirit from 2017 and Memento mori from 2023.
I have to say it, for some reason this song is for me (or was) really depressiv 😂 Good song but i had a hard time in 2013, so never heard it mutch😬 (until today) Thanks anyway Seph again for your work🤘😊
Yeah, that drummer is Christian Eigner. He hss played w/ Depeche since 1998 as well as Peter Gordeno, the keyboardist. They’re playing with Depeche Mode’s current live- line up which is kind of sad ’cause the actual live-sound of DM has gone wrong direction. IMHO. Seph - It’s not going to be the end of your Mode-ride after Memento Mori, not even close ’cause then there’s those live shows you should watch with us 😂 And yeah, maybe this truly is Depeche Mode’s ”the Beatles - moment” 😊 Beat less…
Great reaction again seph. Not sure about the beatles only ever heard the poppy stuff. When you get round to should be higher on this album it would be good to see you do another double reaction with the live in Berlin aswell. The visuals and performance is awesome 😅
Neither Christian or Peter have played on any Depeche albums, they are strictly live. The drummer on this song was likely Mr. D Machine, as in Drum Machine. This is one of their better songs in the recent years, very versatile. Your Beatles comparison is valid. It's certainly a more traditional song, very rootsy, even gospel. I like the production, if you noticed, there's very little electronics, apart from the drums and that funny sound at end. It's good to see them change their approach. There are two really good covers of this on RUclips, one where a woman is singing to simple acoustic guitar, and another that's all electronic.
This was their main single off the album, boring video i agree.. decent song, I enjoyed it at the time more than I feel I do now. Now it is just average sounding to me. The Delta Machine tour was the best seats i have had at a DM concert though, Thanks to the ex who got it for us.

Puts on Dave's voice "Ladies and gentleman...Mr Christian Eigner, marvellous!"
Delta Machine came out in 2013, and Sounds of the Universe in 2009. Ghosts Again is 1 year old

Yeah, Alan could do everyone's job. Play keyboards, sing, play drums, and write songs. It's been 30 years, and I still miss him.
Exactly what i wanted to know 😍
Agree with @SkyelD Alan could do all that and also was a big part in the production work for the songs! He left a big gap in the band, that has not been filled up to date.

Agree. Should be higher is probably Daves best vocals ever. Fits so well with the John Barry like synth.
Alone is also a gem
Secret to the end is my fave track in the album.

It was the first Single from Delta Machine,a good Song and a real good Album.
Delta Machine means Mississippi Delta meets Depeche Mode
Have to admit this is the first time ive heard of this delta. Crazy what you learn every day huh?
My second favourite song from DELTA MACHINE
My #1 Song from DELTA MACHINE is SHOULD BE HIGHER (Dave's song !) 😊😊
My favorite also.

this WAS filmed in an abandoned church near my home in New Orleans
That's pretty cool.

yes, and it was perfect for a tour called Memento Mori
