  • This image was a bit more work than usual, because I had posed Journey by this kind of black and mossy log. As per normal he was looking all around at birds and leaves, and I really liked how alert he was in this photo, looking up and to the side - my favourite kind of "look"... but I had been preparing for a more centred photo, with him looking toward the camera, so the composition was out of control.
Therefore, I had to get a bit creative. After going through my usual process in Lightroom of fixing the white balance, selectively lightening his face, adding some clarity, softening the bokeh and working on his eyes, I took it to Photoshop and immediately set to work copying some of the background from the left side of the image, flipping it and masking it in, enabling me to extend the frame to the right, to give him space to look into.
I then went through my usual workflow (with some technical issues thanks to my tablet and computer playing up), selectively darkening all around Journey (a lot!), casting a spotlight on his face, shifting the background colours slightly more toward red/orange and cyan green, adding a radial gradient for a bit of extra soft light falling on his face, before contouring his face to give it a more 3D effect.

Great edit! I watched the Lightroom part at 0.25x speed! Photoshop is a bit beyond me right now but love learning more about Lightroom, I didn’t expect so many radial filters

Yes! I mean radial filters are just one way to do things but it's how i do most of my editing in LR, because I want to be able to do quite specific edits on different parts of the image. You could use an adjustment brush too but I find that dogs end up "glowing" a bit with that method, as the edges are more obvious.

@@InspawrationPhotography just a suggestion too: could you do a slowed down editing video of the basic things you do whilst editing? I'm struggling on how to edit without using all the fancy photoshop and lightroom tools

@@lucym22 Well, I mean, you can put my speed edits on slower speed and follow along. But really, the stuff I do in LR /is/ the basic things. I set the white balance, very slightly adjust highlights down, shadows up, whites up and blacks down, then do the rest in radial filters. Really I just use the radial filter in a lot of different ways to adjust small parts of the image. I don't want to explain my whole process too in-depth because I want people to sign up for my classes and lessons when I launch them 😉
