I think the reason the network (and the fans) didn’t want to think of it as a rape, is because we fell in love with the Luke & Laura story and it’s not a reality that a victim would fall in love with her attacker
I think Scotty really did kicked to the corner when LnL took off. I always felt bad about that. Apparently, because TG was so charismatic, the sagging ratings went sky high. GH was due to be cancelled in 30 days when Gloria Monty got called on board to salvage the show. She contacted TG, he was so talented, and the soap went through the roof. The rape scene always bothered him, though, and it wasn't addressed until 20 yrs later. If the ratings hadn't skyrocketed, I doubt the rape scene would've been tolerated. It upset a lot of women's groups.
