Who is the doer that directs and moves attention and what IS attention? In the metaphor of the movie and the screen, the screen is not the doer. When you say to move attention, who are you talking to? The screen doesn’t move attention. It is that in which attention and its apparent objects appear. It is not the doer of anything. It doesn’t move attention.
In the metaphor of the movie and the screen, the screen represents pure awareness or consciousness. The question of "who" is moving attention is a way to point out the illusory nature of the doer. The true Self-the screen-does not move attention; it is the still, unchanging presence in which all experiences, including the movement of attention, arise and subside. The process of inquiry into the nature of the doer reveals that there is no separate entity directing attention-there is only awareness, ever-present and unchanging.
